Redefining Leadership
M
eet Shirley Wang, the founder and
CEO of Plastpro Inc., a fiberglass
door manufacturing company. Founded
in 1994, Plastpro is a provider of top-quality
fiberglass doors with superior value and
technology. The organization introduced the first
fiberglass door in the market with Hydroshield
technology comprising of waterproof surround
with composite stiles and rails.
After working and witnessing many family
members in business, Shirley wanted to start her
own business. Although she knew starting a new
business was not going to be easy, she established
Plastpro from ground zero. Shirley knew that
Plastpro could become a success story. However,
everyone else underestimated it. People thought
Plastpro would fail to supply, deliver, or withstand
the test of time yet; Plastpro is now a 28 years old
company and Shirley is the longest-standing CEO
in the fiberglass door industry at present.
Shirley was born in New York, but after her
parent’s divorce, she moved to Taiwan to live
with her maternal grandparents. At this point of
time, Shirley witnessed her mother’s struggle as a
single mother, which eventually inspired her to
have a career and be financially capable.
“It felt important to me, especially being
immersed in a patriarchal society, to know that I
could be a self-reliant woman.”- she says.
Since her childhood, Shirley has watched women
in her family do business. In a male-dominated
society, her grandmother had built businesses in
Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Africa, and Brazil.
While she only had a middle school degree and
had limitations in speaking other languages, she
taught her colleagues Shanghainese. This showed
Shirley that great motivation along with work
ethic could help her create opportunities. She
learned a lot from her grandmother’s initiatives
and resourcefulness and applied them to her life.
While pursuing her undergrad at UCLA, Shirley
sold advertising for Daily Bruin and became the
number one salesperson, which helped her pay
for her college.
Serving Clients with
Maintenance-Free Products
Shirley feels that people gave her and Plastpro a
chance because she was willing to listen to her
customers and customize products according to
their needs. While other manufacturers dictated the
available specs and designs, Plastpro was open to
determining the customers’ needs. The
organization wanted to produce a maintenance-free
solution, so it developed the Hydroshield
technology, where all six sides of a door are
waterproof and maintenance-free.
Shirley says, “We not only care about the outer
beauty of the door - we care about the inner
beauty. If you rip apart our doors and compare
the insides of other companies’doors, you’ll find
that Plastpro doors have the best materials and
construction.”
Also, in 2005, Shirley and her team went to build
the planet’s first fully automatic fiberglass door
company. She states, “We felt that this way we
could service our customers better and faster, and
most importantly, provide precision manufacturing

“That said, I certainly burn the candle on multiple
ends - work, family, and even play. What is
sacrificed is my rest, and I’m learning that is
something I need to figure out how to prioritize. I
am still a work in progress.”- says Shirley.
Just like many other working women, Shirley
feels guilty at work and when she is at home.
However, family always comes first for her. She
tries to have dinner with her kids at least three to
four times a week, and sometimes she even brings
them to her business dinners to achieve the goal.
She always talks to her kids about how their day
is going, and they are aware of the fact that
Shirley has their back under all circumstances.
Maintaining Work-Life Balance
She further adds, “As a leader, whether male or
female, you gain respect through making tough
decisions. At the office or on a board, I believe
pointing things out that are not self-serving but in
the interest of the collective allows one to become
a valued leader.”
Shirley became the first Asian chairwoman at
UCLA, yet people assumed that she was a staff
member, despite having just given a speech as the
chairwoman of the board. She says, “I am used to
being judged and having people treat me like I
don’t belong or try to push me around. You just
need to learn to stand your ground, explain your
rationale, and make your points.”
Tackling Resistance
which ensures our quality time after time. Our

“I realized every moment here is a precious
gift wrapped beautifully for us to open
every day. Every day is an ordinary miracle.
It is a miracle that we can see the sunrise
and graciously set for the moon to appear.
It is a miracle that we can feel our
children’s hugs and kisses. It is a miracle
we can do the things we do at any
moment.”- she says.

and value. It is about putting one foot in
front of the other. We’re not going for the
sprint, but the marathon.”- adds Shirley.
“That means taking things step by step, with no
shortcuts, and accepting that our reputation is
on the line daily. It means focusing on quality
Lately, Plastpro has attracted various new
talents, opening Shirley’s eyes to new things and
ways of doing things. She is not looking for any
exit plans or quarterly results for the future, but
she is building the company to last much beyond
her tenure.
Picture of the Future
Some Thoughts
She also learned that our legacy is not fame,
power, or money. “We came to this world
naked and will be leaving this world naked.
When we leave this earth, we won’t be
remembered for the house we lived in, our
title, or our influence. We will be
remembered by those we Loved, Touched,
and made a Difference in. I’ve learned that
the time to Give is Now. The love we leave
behind will remain and endure the test of
time.”- she added further.

Helping Companies Streamline their
Custom Part Sourcing Workflows
n 2013, Fictiv's Founders realized a major
bottleneck was limiting new product
innovation and custom part sourcing and
manufacturing. Sourcing parts from a fragmented
ecosystem of suppliers was a primary pain point
and business risk for product manufacturing
companies. With the absence of needed
infrastructure, the process of finding and vetting
new suppliers, getting quotes, and keeping track
of orders among hundreds of low-volume
suppliers was slow, inefficient, and full of
miscommunication and errors, putting the entire
market at risk.
So, in 2013, Fictiv was created to solve this issue.
It's an intelligent operating system for custom
manufacturing that makes it much faster, easier,
and more efficient to source and supply custom
mechanical parts. The intelligent OS, supported
by best-in-class talent, puts together a network of
highly vetted and managed partners across the
planet for fast, high-quality manufacturing,
starting from quotation to delivery. Since its
inception, Fictiv has manufactured over 20
million parts for early-stage companies and large
organizations, helping them to innovate and get
products to the market faster.
A Steadfast Leader
Paola Vu serves as the Business Unit Director of
Fictiv. She oversees the Energy, Infrastructure,
Aerospace, and Transportation sectors and
consults with Executive Leadership, Engineering,
Global Supply Chain and Procurement leadership
teams to help speed up their new product
introduction, reduce their development time to
market, and modernize their supply chain.
She loves working with intelligent and passionate
people to solve complex problems at the global
level. She has the greatest respect for the supply
chain and the human relay enabling and
empowering global trade. After witnessing the
massive complexities of digitizing the
international shipping and logistics space, she was
inspired to move up the supply chain to tackle the
digital transformation of the more complex and
widespread manufacturing space.
Paola studied Politics at the University of San
Francisco and couldn't deny the energy and
excitement of the second wave of digital
technology sweeping the entire Bay area. A
veteran of the tech industry, Paola has spent the
last decade building and evangelizing Digital
Transformation technology, focusing on increasing
efficiency in more traditional industries. Before
joining Fictiv, Paola was an early team member at
Flexport, where she consulted on global logistics
and international trade.
Using Communication to Mitigate
Resistance
Throughout her entire career, Paola has worked in
a predominantly male environments, and she is
well aware of the pressure to fit in with the boys’
club. Over the last decade, with more exposure to
female leaders, Paola first worked for female
C-level executives at Fictiv, and soon realized that
she could bring several unique and beneficial
qualities to organization building and
management. She says, "A big priority is building
trust through great communication (and
over-communication when needed), but oftentimes
it's where I see the most resistance."

A big priority is building
trust through great
communication (and
over-communication
when needed), but
oftentimes it's where I see
the most resistance.
“
“
Paola mitigates this resistance by explaining to
her teams why strong communication fuels trust,
implementing simple structures for effective
meetings, and continued reinforcement by
highlighting the positive results of increased team
health and performance.
Maintaining Work-life Balance
Since early 2020 the world has witnessed the
pandemic's emergence, and in a swift response to
the pandemic, Fictiv went fully remote. During
the first year, Paola didn't have a great work-life
balance as she opted to be constantly available for
her team in order to mitigate their burnout and
ensure success. It took her another year to learn
how to implement the best work-life balance for
herself and ensure good health, eating well, sleep,
exercise and logging off within reasonable hours.
Paola feels this balance is of utmost importance
for sustaining success, but it's not an easy skill to
master and something she is constantly working
to improve.
Getting Ready for the Future
In the future, Fictiv aspires to transform the
traditional contract manufacturing industry
beyond new product development as the world's
first Digital Contract Manufacturer for custom
parts. The firm is well prepared to further expand
its manufacturing services with the prototype to
production capabilities and strengthen its
tech-enabled operations to offer world-class
guided expertise as a strategic partner to its
customers at all stages of the product life cycle.

Creating a Better World to Live in
T
amara L. Lundgren is the Chairman,
President, and CEO of Schnitzer Steel, one
of North America's largest metal recyclers
and a manufacturer of steel from 100 percent
recycled metal. The organization works daily to
ensure a future with less waste, more natural
resources, and cleaner air. Schnitzer turns the old
into new, enables the obsolete to become
reusable, and builds better communities in the
process. The company plays a significant role in
the circular economy, using end-of-life products
as starting points in its supply chain. And while
the company's operations primarily involve B2B
interactions, many of the materials it sources are
household products that contain valuable
resources.
Tamara says, “Think about your last major
purchase – maybe it was a new car or a washer
and dryer for your home. Regardless of the
product, you were likely replacing a previous
possession with a new one. You might not have
given much thought to what happened to the item
you replaced – but we did.”
By processing end-of-life cars, railcars,
appliances, and other industrial materials,
Schnitzer delivers recycled commodities that
successfully meet the growing demand for dozens
of metals across various industries. Many low
carbon technologies like electric vehicles, solar,
and wind power are much more metal intensive
than the technologies they are replacing. Using
recycled materials in metal production reduces
carbon intensity massively, a trend accepted by
manufacturers in the US and increasingly around
the globe.
The Steadfast Leader
Tamara joined Schnitzer Steel in 2005 as the Chief
Strategy Officer and moved through positions of
increasing responsibility, including her time as
She says, "I have been honored to lead the
transformation of Schnitzer from a regional
Pacific Northwest company, with three export
facilities reaching customers in three countries, to
a company operating over 100 facilities
throughout North America, including seven
deep-water ports located on both coasts of the
U.S. and Puerto Rico, a retail auto parts business
with over four million annual retail visits, and a
steel manufacturing business which manufactures
finished steel products used in infrastructure and
commercial projects."
Under Tamara's leadership, Schnitzer
accomplished its growth through acquisitions and
significant capital investments in new
technologies, which have increased the company's
platform, provided significant operating
efficiencies, and expanded its product lines to
meet the growing need for metal content
requirements for its global customers.
Before joining Schnitzer , Tamara served as
Managing Director at JPMorgan Chase and
Deutsche Bank. She has also served as a partner in
the D.C. Law Firm of Hogan and Hartson, LLP.
At present, Tamara also serves as the Chair of the
Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of
San Francisco, a member of the Board of
Directors of Ryder System, Inc., and a Trustee of
the Committee for Economic Development of The
Conference Board. She has recently completed her
term as a member of the President's Advisory
Policy for Trade Policy and Negotiations, having
been appointed by President Obama in 2016 and
reappointed by President Trump in 2018. Tamara
is also a member of the Business Roundtable, the
Chief Operating Officer. In 2008, she was
appointed President and CEO and joined the
Board of Directors. In 2020, Tamara took on the
additional role as Chairman of the organization.

Our sustainable business
model has never been
more important than it is
today. As global trends
continue to support the
growth of lower
carbon-based economies,
the demand for
metal-based products,
especially those produced
from recycled materials,
will increase significantly
in the years ahead.
Whether it is driven by the
demand for electric cars,
the deployment of
renewable energy
infrastructure, or the
efficiency and convenience
of “smart cities,” a green
economy means a more
metal-intensive economy.
“
“
Mission and Vision
Schnitzer has been around for over a century;
although the size, scale, and global reach have
changed dramatically since 1906, the
organization's primary mission is still the same:
recycling and resource conservation.
Tamara says, "We rely on our vision to guide our
future: Recycling today for a sustainable
tomorrow. And we anchor ourselves to a purpose
to help define and direct our actions: Operating at
the intersection of metals recovery, reuse,
recycling, and manufacturing, we are committed
to taking actions that sustain future generations
and to working responsibly to provide products
and services that our customers and communities
trust - as we have since 1906."
One can easily understand Schnitzer's vision of a
sustainable future through its core values- safety,
sustainability, and integrity. All these together
define the organization's workplace culture and
illustrate what matters most to its stakeholders. Its
vision manifests itself through its employees,
customer and community partnerships, the
implementation of innovative technologies,
diverse product offerings, and the commitment to
sustainable operations that keep it moving toward
net zero.
Preparing for the Future
Schnitzer’s sustainability framework of People,
Planet, and Profit is the foundation upon which
the company’s results are achieved. During fiscal
2021, Schnitzer reached its goal of 100% net
carbon-free electricity use at the company’s
facilities ahead of the company’s 2022 target and
successfully reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by
19% versus its fiscal 2019 baseline.
Tamara says, "Earlier this year, I was also pleased
to announce the launch of GRN Steel™, a line of
net zero carbon emissions products from our
Cascade steel mill. By introducing this new
China Center Advisory Board of the U.S.
Chamber of Commerce, and the President's
Advisory Council of Wellesley College.
product line, Cascade has created some of the
world's lowest carbon emission steel products,
exemplifying our long-standing reputation for
delivering innovative products that meet the
ever-evolving needs of our customers."
As the organization's leader, Tamara also knows
that low-carbon technologies of the future require
more metals than the technologies they are
replacing.
"We intend to build on our past successes and be
the most trusted partner in this transformation as
companies, governments, and communities across
the globe adopt these low-carbon technologies,"
states Tamara.

aiko is the leading cryptocurrency market data provider for institutional investors and enterprises.
Its institutional grade data services enable seamless connectivity to historical and live data feeds
across 100+ centralized and decentralized exchanges. Ambre Soubiran has been Kaiko’s Chief
Executive Office since 2016.
My keen interest in technology and maths while growing up motivated me to start my career in finance, and
specifically in derivates trading. Even while working intensely on the trading floor, I continued to develop
my interest in disruptive technologies and tried to keep up with it as much as possible.
I first became interested in blockchain in 2012 after reading a white paper on Bitcoin, which made me
realise how it had the potential to revolutionise the way that information is managed and exchanged. When
I first left my job at HSBC in 2016, I wanted to create an investment fund to invest in blockchain
companies and contacted Pascal Gauthier, the original founder of Kaiko. I acquired Kaiko from Gauthier
when he was moving on to become the president at Ledger, where I found myself leading a start-up and
educating investors on blockchain. I also took a series of online courses on computer science to better
understand how blockchain works and grasp where there are gaps in the market.
At first Kaiko had no employees or clients, it was simply a database that was retrieving data from crypto
exchanges. When we did eventually start selling data, we had to send USB sticks to clients by post for them
to access it. Six years on, Kaiko is now an institutional grade data service and earlier this year, Deutsche
Börse announced that it will be making Kaiko’s crypto data accessible to all its customers and our research
reports are also available on Bloomberg Terminals to all users. By the end of 2021, we had 125 institutional
clients and we cover 95% of the CeFi and DeFi market data coverage. We have become the reference
market data provider for digital finance and are operating in a world in which blockchain and crypto are no
longer the outliers they used to be but are instead proving to be the future of technology and finance.

Despite the obstacles and challenges that start-up life brings, the landscape has changed dramatically since I
entered it and there is now a greater focus on mental health and family – around half of the employees at
Kaiko have children. The crypto space also has become significantly more inclusive and diverse – at Kaiko
we have over 60 employees from 14 different nationalities and with a leadership team being made up of
50% women. Everybody at Kaiko speaks English to be inclusive of non-French speakers and not limit our
pool of talent; this is a great accomplishment for a French start-up. Kaiko’s ethos has always been to build
the best team regardless of gender or nationality, with the hope to increase our team to 100 people by the
end of the year.
Kaiko has already raised three rounds of funding, and in June we raised $53 million in a Series B funding
while also being pregnant with my second child. With this new round of funding we hope to expand
Kaiko’s presence globally, while retaining our offices in Paris, London, New York and Singapore.
The best advice that I can give women who want to work in crypto is to learn as much as you can about
technology and not feel intimidated. It is important to explore all the areas of blockchain and crypto until
you find the one that you are the most passionate about. Since the first block of bitcoin in 2009, there is
now not a single bank without a digital assets team and its integration will continue until it is fully propelled
into the mainstream, which can only be achieved if new and diverse talent is introduced to the industry. We
are still at the beginning of our journey with Kaiko, but our mission remains to be the foundation of the new
digital finance economy by serving as a single source for market information.

The 10 Most Influential Women Business Leaders to Watch in 2022
For far too long in the business world, women have been typecast – they are often referred to as those who have
businesses which relate to lifestyle or a ‘hobby’.
Or they are the hard-nut women who make millions at the expense of any and all around them – more like men
in dresses…
Consider the way in which women are often portrayed in the media, even today: as tough ball breakers, agony
aunts or the femme fatale... occasionally a blend, but more often than not, a stereotype.
The pandemic has brought change for all of us however for many women in business, they have gone back-
wards.
They may have had to press pause on their dreams due to having to care for children at home for weeks or
months – or they may have lost clients and not been able to ‘pivot’ into new areas of work or business quickly.
Or they may have had to take any old job to pay the bills when so many areas of work shut down and their
household income took a sudden nosedive.
Now more than ever, women have to show up for other women to help them step into their real power, to help
break the mould – a mould which has already taken too long to shatter and was created by men.
One of the ways to do that is to consider and embrace ‘vulnerability’.
Vulnerability:
Too often this is seen as weakness when, in fact, it can a superpower when harnessed smartly.
When women show up as they truly are, when they share where they’ve come from and what they’ve overcome
and then share dreams for their futures – that creates relatability and empowers others to share similar stories
around their own lives.
This means that other women see themselves ‘out there’ as fellow women – and men - on similar journeys who
have been through similar lived experiences. It allows women to tune into those ‘real and authentic’ stories and,
of course, men too.
Whether it’s an internal blog within a business ‘intranet’ telling a story, or an employee profile or focus on a
company website, or even posts on LinkedIn, when women step away from strategy, overheads and corporate
rhetoric and start showing truth, they will start to break that mould.
And others will notice. They will notice because it changes the narrative. It gives permission for others to share
and it creates more real human connection.
Remember that mould was created by men, however it’s women who are the ones who keep squeezing allowing
themselves to be moulded, allowing themselves to be ‘fitted in’.

Life and business doesn’t need to be about
competing, success doesn’t need to be about money
and earning squillions of quid. Women no longer need
to adhere to that old line about working harder than the
guys to prove themselves.
Women need to take the lead and ditch the outmoded ideas about
highlighting chinks in their armour, being seen as overly emotional or needing
to be hard as nails in the office.
There is NOTHING more impressive than a woman in her power, owning everything she’s been through, proud
of every past misstep that delivered valuable lessons, eager to help others climb the ladder without fear of being
overtaken, and absolutely set on serving, supporting and winning her way to an amazing future of her own
choosing.
The A-Game:
Winning doesn’t need to mean trampling over others or wearing an A-type personality to work – or trying to be
more ‘male’. It’s less about A-type and more about A-game.
When women focus on their own A-game, they will start to see who they are and that will inevitably inspire and
help others to do the same.
It might mean showing care, allowing that compassion to shine through, instead of buttoning up pinstripe
shields and pretending to be impenetrable.

Think about some of the great female role models today who have done this: Michelle Obama, Oprah, Mel
Robbins, Jacina Ardern... the list goes on.
What do they have in common? Heart! They’re not afraid of vulnerability. They don’t shy away from showing
emotion. They’re not trying to be ‘one of the boys’ they are embracing their strong and awesome ‘female’ and
respecting the men around them at the same time.
Personal experience:
Years ago, at the top of the tree in corporate publishing, I wore masks and they started to crush me.
I didn’t know how to lead my staff properly. I didn’t know how to build relatability. I thought it was all about
steering, rather than leading; work hard, play hard; praise only for going over and above, not ‘well done’ for
doing the job expected of them.
Then breakdown hit, and I felt I had to hide it at work for fear of showing weakness and I became more mentally
unwell.
It wasn’t until I got out of that place, began to heal, rebuild and work on myself that I realised the importance of
showing more heart.
That lesson came by accident. In a moment of just wanting to come clean, to relieve the burden and admit to
friends and loved ones how much I’d been struggling, I recorded a Facebook video from my car.
For the first time, I spoke openly about the abuse I’d been through, about the depression, about the breakdown,
about my failed attempts to escape life. I hit send and held my breath.
I was convinced this could spell the end of my relatively new, self-employed career as a coach, mentor and
trainer.
In fact, the opposite happened. People messaged me to tell my words had changed - and sometimes saved - their
life.
From there came media attention - BBC, Huff Post, DIVA, Kindred Spirit, regional and local newspapers. Work
enquiries started to flood in. I was in demand.
I can trace every bit of ‘success’ I’ve had since back to that video - awards, speaking engagements across the
world, book deals - everything.
When women lead from the heart, when women drop all those old, outdated ideas about acceptable corporate
behaviours and start to get more in touch with the power of woman kind, that’s when women everywhere will
realise that showing vulnerability really can be a superpower.

  • 10. Redefining Leadership M eet Shirley Wang, the founder and CEO of Plastpro Inc., a fiberglass door manufacturing company. Founded in 1994, Plastpro is a provider of top-quality fiberglass doors with superior value and technology. The organization introduced the first fiberglass door in the market with Hydroshield technology comprising of waterproof surround with composite stiles and rails. After working and witnessing many family members in business, Shirley wanted to start her own business. Although she knew starting a new business was not going to be easy, she established Plastpro from ground zero. Shirley knew that Plastpro could become a success story. However, everyone else underestimated it. People thought Plastpro would fail to supply, deliver, or withstand the test of time yet; Plastpro is now a 28 years old company and Shirley is the longest-standing CEO in the fiberglass door industry at present. Shirley was born in New York, but after her parent’s divorce, she moved to Taiwan to live with her maternal grandparents. At this point of time, Shirley witnessed her mother’s struggle as a single mother, which eventually inspired her to have a career and be financially capable. “It felt important to me, especially being immersed in a patriarchal society, to know that I could be a self-reliant woman.”- she says. Since her childhood, Shirley has watched women in her family do business. In a male-dominated society, her grandmother had built businesses in Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Africa, and Brazil. While she only had a middle school degree and had limitations in speaking other languages, she taught her colleagues Shanghainese. This showed Shirley that great motivation along with work ethic could help her create opportunities. She learned a lot from her grandmother’s initiatives and resourcefulness and applied them to her life. While pursuing her undergrad at UCLA, Shirley sold advertising for Daily Bruin and became the number one salesperson, which helped her pay for her college. Serving Clients with Maintenance-Free Products Shirley feels that people gave her and Plastpro a chance because she was willing to listen to her customers and customize products according to their needs. While other manufacturers dictated the available specs and designs, Plastpro was open to determining the customers’ needs. The organization wanted to produce a maintenance-free solution, so it developed the Hydroshield technology, where all six sides of a door are waterproof and maintenance-free. Shirley says, “We not only care about the outer beauty of the door - we care about the inner beauty. If you rip apart our doors and compare the insides of other companies’doors, you’ll find that Plastpro doors have the best materials and construction.” Also, in 2005, Shirley and her team went to build the planet’s first fully automatic fiberglass door company. She states, “We felt that this way we could service our customers better and faster, and most importantly, provide precision manufacturing 10 August 2022

  • 12. “That said, I certainly burn the candle on multiple ends - work, family, and even play. What is sacrificed is my rest, and I’m learning that is something I need to figure out how to prioritize. I am still a work in progress.”- says Shirley. Just like many other working women, Shirley feels guilty at work and when she is at home. However, family always comes first for her. She tries to have dinner with her kids at least three to four times a week, and sometimes she even brings them to her business dinners to achieve the goal. She always talks to her kids about how their day is going, and they are aware of the fact that Shirley has their back under all circumstances. Maintaining Work-Life Balance She further adds, “As a leader, whether male or female, you gain respect through making tough decisions. At the office or on a board, I believe pointing things out that are not self-serving but in the interest of the collective allows one to become a valued leader.” Shirley became the first Asian chairwoman at UCLA, yet people assumed that she was a staff member, despite having just given a speech as the chairwoman of the board. She says, “I am used to being judged and having people treat me like I don’t belong or try to push me around. You just need to learn to stand your ground, explain your rationale, and make your points.” Tackling Resistance which ensures our quality time after time. Our products are sold through distributors but can be found on Amazon and Home Depot.” As a leader, whether male or female, you gain respect through making tough decisions. At the office or on a board, I believe pointing things out that are not self-serving but in the interest of the collective allows one to become a valued leader. “ “ 12
  • 13. “I realized every moment here is a precious gift wrapped beautifully for us to open every day. Every day is an ordinary miracle. It is a miracle that we can see the sunrise and graciously set for the moon to appear. It is a miracle that we can feel our children’s hugs and kisses. It is a miracle we can do the things we do at any moment.”- she says. After Shirley’s husband went through 4th stage cancer, she first realized that our world is fragile and can disappear without notice. and value. It is about putting one foot in front of the other. We’re not going for the sprint, but the marathon.”- adds Shirley. “That means taking things step by step, with no shortcuts, and accepting that our reputation is on the line daily. It means focusing on quality Lately, Plastpro has attracted various new talents, opening Shirley’s eyes to new things and ways of doing things. She is not looking for any exit plans or quarterly results for the future, but she is building the company to last much beyond her tenure. Picture of the Future Some Thoughts She also learned that our legacy is not fame, power, or money. “We came to this world naked and will be leaving this world naked. When we leave this earth, we won’t be remembered for the house we lived in, our title, or our influence. We will be remembered by those we Loved, Touched, and made a Difference in. I’ve learned that the time to Give is Now. The love we leave behind will remain and endure the test of time.”- she added further. 13 August 2022
  • 16. I Helping Companies Streamline their Custom Part Sourcing Workflows n 2013, Fictiv's Founders realized a major bottleneck was limiting new product innovation and custom part sourcing and manufacturing. Sourcing parts from a fragmented ecosystem of suppliers was a primary pain point and business risk for product manufacturing companies. With the absence of needed infrastructure, the process of finding and vetting new suppliers, getting quotes, and keeping track of orders among hundreds of low-volume suppliers was slow, inefficient, and full of miscommunication and errors, putting the entire market at risk. So, in 2013, Fictiv was created to solve this issue. It's an intelligent operating system for custom manufacturing that makes it much faster, easier, and more efficient to source and supply custom mechanical parts. The intelligent OS, supported by best-in-class talent, puts together a network of highly vetted and managed partners across the planet for fast, high-quality manufacturing, starting from quotation to delivery. Since its inception, Fictiv has manufactured over 20 million parts for early-stage companies and large organizations, helping them to innovate and get products to the market faster. A Steadfast Leader Paola Vu serves as the Business Unit Director of Fictiv. She oversees the Energy, Infrastructure, Aerospace, and Transportation sectors and consults with Executive Leadership, Engineering, Global Supply Chain and Procurement leadership teams to help speed up their new product introduction, reduce their development time to market, and modernize their supply chain. She loves working with intelligent and passionate people to solve complex problems at the global level. She has the greatest respect for the supply chain and the human relay enabling and empowering global trade. After witnessing the massive complexities of digitizing the international shipping and logistics space, she was inspired to move up the supply chain to tackle the digital transformation of the more complex and widespread manufacturing space. Paola studied Politics at the University of San Francisco and couldn't deny the energy and excitement of the second wave of digital technology sweeping the entire Bay area. A veteran of the tech industry, Paola has spent the last decade building and evangelizing Digital Transformation technology, focusing on increasing efficiency in more traditional industries. Before joining Fictiv, Paola was an early team member at Flexport, where she consulted on global logistics and international trade. Using Communication to Mitigate Resistance Throughout her entire career, Paola has worked in a predominantly male environments, and she is well aware of the pressure to fit in with the boys’ club. Over the last decade, with more exposure to female leaders, Paola first worked for female C-level executives at Fictiv, and soon realized that she could bring several unique and beneficial qualities to organization building and management. She says, "A big priority is building trust through great communication (and over-communication when needed), but oftentimes it's where I see the most resistance." 16 August 2022

  • 18. A big priority is building trust through great communication (and over-communication when needed), but oftentimes it's where I see the most resistance. “ “ Paola mitigates this resistance by explaining to her teams why strong communication fuels trust, implementing simple structures for effective meetings, and continued reinforcement by highlighting the positive results of increased team health and performance. Maintaining Work-life Balance Since early 2020 the world has witnessed the pandemic's emergence, and in a swift response to the pandemic, Fictiv went fully remote. During the first year, Paola didn't have a great work-life balance as she opted to be constantly available for her team in order to mitigate their burnout and ensure success. It took her another year to learn how to implement the best work-life balance for herself and ensure good health, eating well, sleep, exercise and logging off within reasonable hours. Paola feels this balance is of utmost importance for sustaining success, but it's not an easy skill to master and something she is constantly working to improve. Getting Ready for the Future In the future, Fictiv aspires to transform the traditional contract manufacturing industry beyond new product development as the world's first Digital Contract Manufacturer for custom parts. The firm is well prepared to further expand its manufacturing services with the prototype to production capabilities and strengthen its tech-enabled operations to offer world-class guided expertise as a strategic partner to its customers at all stages of the product life cycle. 18 August 2022
  • 20. Creating a Better World to Live in T amara L. Lundgren is the Chairman, President, and CEO of Schnitzer Steel, one of North America's largest metal recyclers and a manufacturer of steel from 100 percent recycled metal. The organization works daily to ensure a future with less waste, more natural resources, and cleaner air. Schnitzer turns the old into new, enables the obsolete to become reusable, and builds better communities in the process. The company plays a significant role in the circular economy, using end-of-life products as starting points in its supply chain. And while the company's operations primarily involve B2B interactions, many of the materials it sources are household products that contain valuable resources. Tamara says, “Think about your last major purchase – maybe it was a new car or a washer and dryer for your home. Regardless of the product, you were likely replacing a previous possession with a new one. You might not have given much thought to what happened to the item you replaced – but we did.” By processing end-of-life cars, railcars, appliances, and other industrial materials, Schnitzer delivers recycled commodities that successfully meet the growing demand for dozens of metals across various industries. Many low carbon technologies like electric vehicles, solar, and wind power are much more metal intensive than the technologies they are replacing. Using recycled materials in metal production reduces carbon intensity massively, a trend accepted by manufacturers in the US and increasingly around the globe. The Steadfast Leader Tamara joined Schnitzer Steel in 2005 as the Chief Strategy Officer and moved through positions of increasing responsibility, including her time as She says, "I have been honored to lead the transformation of Schnitzer from a regional Pacific Northwest company, with three export facilities reaching customers in three countries, to a company operating over 100 facilities throughout North America, including seven deep-water ports located on both coasts of the U.S. and Puerto Rico, a retail auto parts business with over four million annual retail visits, and a steel manufacturing business which manufactures finished steel products used in infrastructure and commercial projects." Under Tamara's leadership, Schnitzer accomplished its growth through acquisitions and significant capital investments in new technologies, which have increased the company's platform, provided significant operating efficiencies, and expanded its product lines to meet the growing need for metal content requirements for its global customers. Before joining Schnitzer , Tamara served as Managing Director at JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank. She has also served as a partner in the D.C. Law Firm of Hogan and Hartson, LLP. At present, Tamara also serves as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, a member of the Board of Directors of Ryder System, Inc., and a Trustee of the Committee for Economic Development of The Conference Board. She has recently completed her term as a member of the President's Advisory Policy for Trade Policy and Negotiations, having been appointed by President Obama in 2016 and reappointed by President Trump in 2018. Tamara is also a member of the Business Roundtable, the Chief Operating Officer. In 2008, she was appointed President and CEO and joined the Board of Directors. In 2020, Tamara took on the additional role as Chairman of the organization. 20 August 2022

As global trends continue to support the growth of lower carbon-based economies, the demand for metal-based products, especially those produced from recycled materials, will increase significantly in the years ahead. Whether it is driven by the demand for electric cars, the deployment of renewable energy infrastructure, or the efficiency and convenience of “smart cities,” a green economy means a more metal-intensive economy. “ “ Mission and Vision Schnitzer has been around for over a century; although the size, scale, and global reach have changed dramatically since 1906, the organization's primary mission is still the same: recycling and resource conservation. Tamara says, "We rely on our vision to guide our future: Recycling today for a sustainable tomorrow. And we anchor ourselves to a purpose to help define and direct our actions: Operating at the intersection of metals recovery, reuse, recycling, and manufacturing, we are committed to taking actions that sustain future generations and to working responsibly to provide products and services that our customers and communities trust - as we have since 1906." One can easily understand Schnitzer's vision of a sustainable future through its core values- safety, sustainability, and integrity. All these together define the organization's workplace culture and illustrate what matters most to its stakeholders. Its vision manifests itself through its employees, customer and community partnerships, the implementation of innovative technologies, diverse product offerings, and the commitment to sustainable operations that keep it moving toward net zero. Preparing for the Future Schnitzer’s sustainability framework of People, Planet, and Profit is the foundation upon which the company’s results are achieved. During fiscal 2021, Schnitzer reached its goal of 100% net carbon-free electricity use at the company’s facilities ahead of the company’s 2022 target and successfully reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 19% versus its fiscal 2019 baseline. Tamara says, "Earlier this year, I was also pleased to announce the launch of GRN Steel™, a line of net zero carbon emissions products from our Cascade steel mill. By introducing this new China Center Advisory Board of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the President's Advisory Council of Wellesley College. product line, Cascade has created some of the world's lowest carbon emission steel products, exemplifying our long-standing reputation for delivering innovative products that meet the ever-evolving needs of our customers." As the organization's leader, Tamara also knows that low-carbon technologies of the future require more metals than the technologies they are replacing. "We intend to build on our past successes and be the most trusted partner in this transformation as companies, governments, and communities across the globe adopt these low-carbon technologies," states Tamara. 22 August 2022
  • 24. Ambre Soubiran CEO | Kaiko K aiko is the leading cryptocurrency market data provider for institutional investors and enterprises. Its institutional grade data services enable seamless connectivity to historical and live data feeds across 100+ centralized and decentralized exchanges. Ambre Soubiran has been Kaiko’s Chief Executive Office since 2016. My keen interest in technology and maths while growing up motivated me to start my career in finance, and specifically in derivates trading. Even while working intensely on the trading floor, I continued to develop my interest in disruptive technologies and tried to keep up with it as much as possible. I first became interested in blockchain in 2012 after reading a white paper on Bitcoin, which made me realise how it had the potential to revolutionise the way that information is managed and exchanged. When I first left my job at HSBC in 2016, I wanted to create an investment fund to invest in blockchain companies and contacted Pascal Gauthier, the original founder of Kaiko. I acquired Kaiko from Gauthier when he was moving on to become the president at Ledger, where I found myself leading a start-up and educating investors on blockchain. I also took a series of online courses on computer science to better understand how blockchain works and grasp where there are gaps in the market. At first Kaiko had no employees or clients, it was simply a database that was retrieving data from crypto exchanges. When we did eventually start selling data, we had to send USB sticks to clients by post for them to access it. Six years on, Kaiko is now an institutional grade data service and earlier this year, Deutsche Börse announced that it will be making Kaiko’s crypto data accessible to all its customers and our research reports are also available on Bloomberg Terminals to all users. By the end of 2021, we had 125 institutional clients and we cover 95% of the CeFi and DeFi market data coverage. We have become the reference market data provider for digital finance and are operating in a world in which blockchain and crypto are no longer the outliers they used to be but are instead proving to be the future of technology and finance. 24 August 2022
  • 25. Helping with Cryptocurrency Market Data The 10 Most Influential Women Business Leaders to Watch in 2022. Despite the obstacles and challenges that start-up life brings, the landscape has changed dramatically since I entered it and there is now a greater focus on mental health and family – around half of the employees at Kaiko have children. The crypto space also has become significantly more inclusive and diverse – at Kaiko we have over 60 employees from 14 different nationalities and with a leadership team being made up of 50% women. Everybody at Kaiko speaks English to be inclusive of non-French speakers and not limit our pool of talent; this is a great accomplishment for a French start-up. Kaiko’s ethos has always been to build the best team regardless of gender or nationality, with the hope to increase our team to 100 people by the end of the year. Kaiko has already raised three rounds of funding, and in June we raised $53 million in a Series B funding while also being pregnant with my second child. With this new round of funding we hope to expand Kaiko’s presence globally, while retaining our offices in Paris, London, New York and Singapore. The best advice that I can give women who want to work in crypto is to learn as much as you can about technology and not feel intimidated. It is important to explore all the areas of blockchain and crypto until you find the one that you are the most passionate about. Since the first block of bitcoin in 2009, there is now not a single bank without a digital assets team and its integration will continue until it is fully propelled into the mainstream, which can only be achieved if new and diverse talent is introduced to the industry. We are still at the beginning of our journey with Kaiko, but our mission remains to be the foundation of the new digital finance economy by serving as a single source for market information. 25 August 2022
  • 28. For far too long in the business world, women have been typecast – they are often referred to as those who have businesses which relate to lifestyle or a ‘hobby’. Or they are the hard-nut women who make millions at the expense of any and all around them – more like men in dresses… Consider the way in which women are often portrayed in the media, even today: as tough ball breakers, agony aunts or the femme fatale... occasionally a blend, but more often than not, a stereotype. The pandemic has brought change for all of us however for many women in business, they have gone back- wards. They may have had to press pause on their dreams due to having to care for children at home for weeks or months – or they may have lost clients and not been able to ‘pivot’ into new areas of work or business quickly. Or they may have had to take any old job to pay the bills when so many areas of work shut down and their household income took a sudden nosedive. Now more than ever, women have to show up for other women to help them step into their real power, to help break the mould – a mould which has already taken too long to shatter and was created by men. One of the ways to do that is to consider and embrace ‘vulnerability’. Vulnerability: Too often this is seen as weakness when, in fact, it can a superpower when harnessed smartly. When women show up as they truly are, when they share where they’ve come from and what they’ve overcome and then share dreams for their futures – that creates relatability and empowers others to share similar stories around their own lives. This means that other women see themselves ‘out there’ as fellow women – and men - on similar journeys who have been through similar lived experiences. It allows women to tune into those ‘real and authentic’ stories and, of course, men too. Whether it’s an internal blog within a business ‘intranet’ telling a story, or an employee profile or focus on a company website, or even posts on LinkedIn, when women step away from strategy, overheads and corporate rhetoric and start showing truth, they will start to break that mould. And others will notice. They will notice because it changes the narrative. It gives permission for others to share and it creates more real human connection. Remember that mould was created by men, however it’s women who are the ones who keep squeezing allowing themselves to be moulded, allowing themselves to be ‘fitted in’. 01 www.theincmagazine.com The 10 Most Influential Women Business Leaders to Watch in 2022. 28 August 2022
  • 29. Life and business doesn’t need to be about competing, success doesn’t need to be about money and earning squillions of quid. Women no longer need to adhere to that old line about working harder than the guys to prove themselves. Women need to take the lead and ditch the outmoded ideas about highlighting chinks in their armour, being seen as overly emotional or needing to be hard as nails in the office. There is NOTHING more impressive than a woman in her power, owning everything she’s been through, proud of every past misstep that delivered valuable lessons, eager to help others climb the ladder without fear of being overtaken, and absolutely set on serving, supporting and winning her way to an amazing future of her own choosing. The A-Game: Winning doesn’t need to mean trampling over others or wearing an A-type personality to work – or trying to be more ‘male’. It’s less about A-type and more about A-game. When women focus on their own A-game, they will start to see who they are and that will inevitably inspire and help others to do the same. It might mean showing care, allowing that compassion to shine through, instead of buttoning up pinstripe shields and pretending to be impenetrable. 02 www.theincmagazine.com TAZ THORNTON Taz Thornton | speaker author 29 August 2022
  • 30. Think about some of the great female role models today who have done this: Michelle Obama, Oprah, Mel Robbins, Jacina Ardern... the list goes on. What do they have in common? Heart! They’re not afraid of vulnerability. They don’t shy away from showing emotion. They’re not trying to be ‘one of the boys’ they are embracing their strong and awesome ‘female’ and respecting the men around them at the same time. Personal experience: Years ago, at the top of the tree in corporate publishing, I wore masks and they started to crush me. I didn’t know how to lead my staff properly. I didn’t know how to build relatability. I thought it was all about steering, rather than leading; work hard, play hard; praise only for going over and above, not ‘well done’ for doing the job expected of them. Then breakdown hit, and I felt I had to hide it at work for fear of showing weakness and I became more mentally unwell. It wasn’t until I got out of that place, began to heal, rebuild and work on myself that I realised the importance of showing more heart. That lesson came by accident. In a moment of just wanting to come clean, to relieve the burden and admit to friends and loved ones how much I’d been struggling, I recorded a Facebook video from my car. For the first time, I spoke openly about the abuse I’d been through, about the depression, about the breakdown, about my failed attempts to escape life. I hit send and held my breath. I was convinced this could spell the end of my relatively new, self-employed career as a coach, mentor and trainer. In fact, the opposite happened. People messaged me to tell my words had changed - and sometimes saved - their life. From there came media attention - BBC, Huff Post, DIVA, Kindred Spirit, regional and local newspapers. Work enquiries started to flood in. I was in demand. I can trace every bit of ‘success’ I’ve had since back to that video - awards, speaking engagements across the world, book deals - everything. When women lead from the heart, when women drop all those old, outdated ideas about acceptable corporate behaviours and start to get more in touch with the power of woman kind, that’s when women everywhere will realise that showing vulnerability really can be a superpower. 03 www.theincmagazine.com 30 August 2022
