Sagalassos was an important city in ancient Pisidia dating back to the 14th century BCE. It was one of the wealthiest cities when conquered by Alexander the Great in 333 BCE. The urban site was laid out on terraces between 1400-1600 meters altitude. After earthquakes in the 6th and 7th centuries CE, inhabitants abandoned the town due to epidemics, water shortages, and instability. Today Sagalassos remains an archaeological site visited by 20,000 people annually, with structures like its one-story high Roman theatre from the 2nd century AD.
