67. 2. Simplicity
Must be adequately comprehensive at a level
of abstraction to offer direction.
Must have as few concepts as possible
having simple relations to assist clarity.
Offers the greatest sense of understanding.
Parsimony=elegant simplicity although it
may be extensive in content.
10/25/2023 67
68. 3. Generality
• “ The more limited the concept and

71. 5. Derivable Consequences
• Theory should lead itself to research testing
which should result to additional knowledge
that guides practice.
• Should give direction to research and
practice, create new ideas, and ought to
distinguish the focus of nursing to other
professions.
• Developed and guide practice.
• Reveal what knowledge should nurses

Theoretical models or frameworks are highly testable. The following is a theoretical framework as proposed by Lydia Hall a nurse theorist.
Person-social sciences, therapeutic use of self
Body: natural and biological sciences, intimate bodily care
Disease: pathological and therapeutic sciences, seeing the pt and family through medical care
Conceptual models or frameworks are…
They can be…..
In its broadest sense, science id from the latin word
In a more casual sense, science refers to a system of acquiring …….It is also the organized….
Examples: Observation: Elmer, a nurse researcher observes a certain nursing phenomena and makes a study of it.; Gathering: His colleague dave helps him to gather data thru varioius methods.; Hypothesis: They both make a hypothesis, an intelligent guess on the nature of the phenomena
Investigations: They conduct a survey and interview and apply statistical treatment of data
Conclusion: Based from the results, they draw a conclusion. As new data emerges, the study is re-examined and verified.
Knowledge can be defined as…
Knowledge acquirement involves several cognitive process….
Knowledge emerges from range of sources which can be categorized into three namely: traditional, authoritative and scientific sources..
Traditional is a nursing practice which is passed down…when asked about the basis of the nursing practice the answer would be as simple as” It always been practiced this way..An example that had impact to nursing practice is the routine changing of bed linens whether soiled of not . This practice is commonly observed in ICU set up. Even though there are no research data to support this, still practice is adopted in the hospital as an important component of providing quality patient care.
Is an idea by a person…… An example of this type can be seen in the clinical setting in which a nurse supervisor who is considered expert in the field is teaching a nurse beginner on the proper insertion of a urinary catheter. The nurse supervisor is well equipped with knowledge and skills about the procedure through experience and the novice nurse accept it as true because of the authority maintains his her perceived expertise authoritative knowledge is accepted.
Is a type of knowledge which came from a scientific method…The new ideas are tested….for Example a student nurse providing Tepid Sponge Bath to a patient with fever, should know the rationale(reason) behind this procedure which is heat transfer through evaporation(basic physics). The underlying principle in this procedure is a concrete example of knowledge based from scientific point of view. The tree sources of knowledge are valuable in the body of knowledge that represents the nursing profession. However each of them has its own strong and weak points.
