Spain experienced economic and population decline in the 17th century. The Thirty Years' War from 1618 to 1648 exacerbated Spain's economic crisis. Under the rule of King Philip IV, Spain lost the territory of the Netherlands. When the last Habsburg king Carlos II died without an heir, it led to the War of Spanish Succession between France and Austria over who would inherit the Spanish throne. The Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 ended the war and saw Spain lose territories to Austria and Britain, and establish the Bourbon dynasty under King Philip V.
