THE TEXT
The first day of school, our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know
someone for the first time. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I
turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her
entire being. She said, “Hi, handsome! My name is Rose. I'm 87 years old. Can I give you a
hug?” I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant
squeeze. “Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked. She jokingly replied,
“I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and
travel.” “No seriously,” I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this
challenge at her age. “I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!”
she told me.
After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We
became instant friends. Every day for the next three months, we would leave class together and
talk nonstop. I was always fascinated listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom
and experience with me. Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon. She easily
made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she enjoyed the attention given to
her from the other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football dinner party. I'll never
forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to
deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her cards on the floor. Frustrated and a little
embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, “I'm sorry I'm so stressed out. I'll
never get my speech back in order, so let me just tell you what I know.” As we laughed, she
cleared her throat and began:
“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There
are only four secrets to staying young, being happy and achieving success. You have to laugh
and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We
have so many people walking around who are dead, and they don't even know it! There is a
huge difference between growing older and growing up. GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY,
GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL. If you are 19 or 87 and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one
productive thing, you will grow older and you won’t acquire any skill. The idea is to grow up by
always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets
for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those
with regrets.” She concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Rose.” She challenged
each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives.
At the year’s end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One
week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students
attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never
too late to be all you can possibly be.

Research from many nations consistently documents the high level of students who stay home
because they're scared of being bullied. Every day, students around the world are routinely
_ taught__ the basic, universal human right to education because of discrimination and violence
they experience in school. To prevent this problem, many organizations draw attention to this
problem that affects many disabled children and young adults. They hope to raise awareness to
the fact that more needs to be done to __ tackle _ the issue and make life better for the disabled
and their families. Some people say that it's normal to be bullied or that it's something you have
to go through as part of being a teen. Don't listen! It's _ definitely _ not normal and having to
go through it can be very _ hurtful __. It can also have a huge impact on a child's ability to
absorb what they're being __ denied __ as the fear dominates the real aim of being at school,
which is to get an education! Students find their _ self-esteem beaten and even experience
physical symptoms like stomach aches, headaches and depression. As a student, you have the
opportunity to make a real difference. You can help to develop school climates where difference
is valued for the positive contribution it makes in creating a more tolerant and _ diverse _
community.
2/ Put the bracketed words in the right tense or form. (3.5 marks)
As a middle-school student in the '80s, Buono stayed after school to remove the brain and spinal
cord from a frog. He did such a good job that his science teacher told him he might be a
neurosurgeon someday. Years later, a patient with a tumor came to see Buono. The (grow)
________growth__ was benign, but interfered with the patient's (speak) ___speech__ which
was almost unintelligible. Surgery was successful and the patient was able to speak again. “He
was so excited that he wanted to hug me,” Buono says. He asked Buono who (inspire)
_____had inspired__ him to become a surgeon, and he told him about his old teacher. “You
make sure you call that teacher to thank him,” the patient said. So, Buono picked up the phone
and introduced himself. “What’s going on man? I (not / hear) __haven’t heard__ from you
since you were in high school,” the teacher said. “I want to thank you,” Buono replied. The
teacher started to cry and said (surprise) __surprisingly_: “Of all the people in your entire
career, you want to thank me? It is the same feeling I had when my kids (bear) ___were
born__. It makes me feel really important that I had that influence on you.” Lately, the teacher
admits that he is afraid to say he is a teacher to some people. “Not anymore,” he tells Buono,
“because you called me. I'm a teacher, and I (help) _____help____ as many people as I can to
find their passion too.”
3/ Circle the right alternative. (3 marks)
The sweetest victory is the one that’s most difficult. The one that (requires / acquires /
enquires) you to fight with everything you’ve got until that do-or-die moment. Society doesn’t
reward defeat, and you won’t find many failures documented in (books history /
history books/ histories books). The exceptions are those failures that become
steppingstones to later success. Such is the case with Thomas Edison, whose most memorable
invention was the light bulb, which took him 1,000 tries before he developed a (successful /
success / succeeded) prototype. “How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?” a reporter asked. “I
didn’t fail 1,000 times,” Edison responded. “The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”
(Besides /Unlike/ As) Edison, many of us avoid the prospect of failure. In fact, we’re so
focused on not failing that we don’t aim for success, settling instead for a life of mediocrity. Far
from being a sign of intellectual inferiority, the capacity to err is a powerful tool a
(strong-willed / strong-willing / strongly-willed) person uses to reach great success.
Failure and defeat are life’s greatest teachers but sadly, most people, and particularly
conservative cultures, don’t want to go there. (Instead /So / Because), they choose to repeat
the same safe choices over and over again because they generally never attempt anything great
at which they could possibly fail or succeed.

Test n-2-4th-form-arts-2014-2015

  • 1. THE TEXT The first day of school, our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone for the first time. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, “Hi, handsome! My name is Rose. I'm 87 years old. Can I give you a hug?” I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze. “Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel.” “No seriously,” I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. “I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!” she told me. After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months, we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always fascinated listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon. She easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she enjoyed the attention given to her from the other students. She was living it up. At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football dinner party. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her cards on the floor. Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, “I'm sorry I'm so stressed out. I'll never get my speech back in order, so let me just tell you what I know.” As we laughed, she cleared her throat and began: “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead, and they don't even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY, GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL. If you are 19 or 87 and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will grow older and you won’t acquire any skill. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.” She concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Rose.” She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year’s end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be. http://www.inspire21.com (Adapted)

(3.5 marks) As a middle-school student in the '80s, Buono stayed after school to remove the brain and spinal cord from a frog. The (grow) ________growth__ was benign, but interfered with the patient's (speak) ___speech__ which was almost unintelligible. The one that (requires / acquires / enquires) you to fight with everything you’ve got until that do-or-die moment. Society doesn’t reward defeat, and you won’t find many failures documented in (books history / history books/ histories books). The exceptions are those failures that become steppingstones to later success. Such is the case with Thomas Edison, whose most memorable invention was the light bulb, which took him 1,000 tries before he developed a (successful / success / succeeded) prototype. “How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?” a reporter asked. “I didn’t fail 1,000 times,” Edison responded. “The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.” (Besides /Unlike/ As) Edison, many of us avoid the prospect of failure. In fact, we’re so focused on not failing that we don’t aim for success, settling instead for a life of mediocrity. Far from being a sign of intellectual inferiority, the capacity to err is a powerful tool a (strong-willed / strong-willing / strongly-willed) person uses to reach great success. Failure and defeat are life’s greatest teachers but sadly, most people, and particularly conservative cultures, don’t want to go there. (Instead /So / Because), they choose to repeat the same safe choices over and over again because they generally never attempt anything great at which they could possibly fail or succeed. taught / excluded / diverse / hurtful / denied / self-esteem / tackle / definitely / danger
