INTRODUCTION
My name is LAURENT OSCAR KANDEGE,I study basic certificate in information technology at
Teofilo Kisanji University. I performed my field practical for eight weeks at IT department in
TANZANIA TELECOMMUNICATIONCOOPERATION LIMITED(TTCL) in Mbeya City.
BACKGROUND.
Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL) is the oldest and largest fixed
line telecommunications company in Tanzania. The company comes forth from the former Tanzania Posts
and Telecommunications Corporation in 1993. TTCL was wholly owned by the Government of
Tanzania until the partial privatisation of the company on 23 February 2001.
TTCL is governed by statute—the Tanzania Telecommunications Act of 1993. The company is licensee
for fixed basic telephone services in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar and hence it owns and operates
the public switched telephone network in mainland Tanzania and on Zanzibar.[2]
Before the coming of
mobile operators in late 1994, the company was enjoying monopoly on Tanzania Mainland and
a duopoly on Tanzania Zanzibar, where Zanzibar Telecoms Limited (Zantel) was the second licensed
fixed basic telephony operator. The company has been in several joint managements due to its financial
instability in the past and has gone through severalrestructuring phases.
It has been working with Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd as the infrastructure vendor of the company
and Ericsson as a long-term strategic supplier of the company.
Early history
TTCL traces its roots to the East African telecommunications provider. In 1933, the former East African
Post and Telegraph Company covered Postal, Telegraph and Telephone services in the three East African
nations of Tanganyika, Kenya and Uganda. In 1951 the British government replaced the East African Post
and Telegraph Company and enacted the East African Posts and Telecommunication Act in 1951 to
charter the East African Posts and Telecommunications Administration.
In 1967, post independence of the three nations, the East African Community (EAC) was founded and
replaced the East African Common Service Organization. In the aftermath, the East African Post and
Telecommunications Corporation (EAP&TC) was established and replaced the East African Posts and
Telecommunications Administration. However, ten years later, the breaking up of EAC in 1977
forced EAC member countries to re-establish their own national Postal, Telegraph and Telephone
businesses. Therefore, in 1978 in Tanzania a parastatal was established under the name Tanzania Posts
and Telecommunications Corporation (TPTC).
6. 5
In 1993 when the government of Tanzania heavily restructured parastatals, the Telecommunication sector
was liberalised. This saw the splitting up of the TPTC; the TPTC split into three separate entities, namely
the Tanzania Posts Corporation, the Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL), and
the Tanzania Communication Commission (TCC).

CHAPTER FOUR
4.1 Challengesfaced during the practice.
There some challenge I was facing during the field practices training. First the adaption of the working
environment, at the first time it was very hard to adopt the surrounding because the much attention and
silence is needed at the area of field work. I faced the personal problems in which some tools like phone
tester, amplifier, tone, three m and device like MSAN ,DP,MDF,ODF,SFP which does not show in my
eyes . I faced the challenge during the network installation due to that the RJ45 breakup during the
installation of cable. I faced the challenge in computer maintenance on desktop separation during putting
back the mother board forget some screw.
4.2 Ways used to overcome challenges.
I overcome those challenges through the more exercise practice on my spear times during break and
home time to read notice given by my supervisor and more exercise on connections point to point
network and viewing other beautiful connections of network device in online like router, hub, modem ,
ask more question to the supervisor and staff members .I attend to the field always as long as I can to gain
more knowledge on configuration in modem and making wire-ling network installation, building myself
confidence to overcome the obstacles and building faith on what am doing and also play to my
Almighty God.
CHAPTER FIVE
5.1 General suggestions
Field practice expanded my knowledge and skills from one level to another because I have learned many
and new things to an institution I was practiced. But there are challenges we need to face in order to make
us unique competitor and be the stronger competition on the outside market such as the practices training
subject such as networking, telephone troubleshooting, telephone maintenance and programming
(command code).
