Improving Safety and Health Management in the Construction Industry.
A safety culture helps to ensure wider adoption of safety practices and allows companies to better reap the benefits of their safety investments. The new findings on the influence of a safety culture at a construction company, along with striking differences from the findings in 2012, demonstrate that encouraging a safety culture is critical, that safety investments in the industry are clearly paying off and that jobsite workers are increasingly recognized as playing a critical role in ensuring high safety performance at construction companies. BUILDING A SAFETY CULTURE
A safety culture is an organizational culture that places a high level of importance on safety beliefs, values and attitudes—and these are shared by the majority of people within the company or workplace. It can be characterized as 'the way we do things around here'.
It is a subset of the overall organizational or company culture. Many companies talk about 'safety culture' when referring to the inclination of their employees to comply with rules or act safety or unsafely.
A positive safety culture exists when employees understand the importance of safety and exhibit positive safety behaviors. Examples of positive safety behaviors include wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) without being asked, completing risks assessments for all jobs and reporting all incidents.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), developing a strong safety culture has the single greatest impact on accident reduction of any workplace practice. Therefore, developing a safety culture should be a top priority for the managers and supervisors at your organization.
OBJECTIVES OF A SAFETY CULTURE
Safety culture is the set of shared attitudes, beliefs, and practices demonstrated by workers at all levels of the company. A positive safety culture connects everyone in the company around a common goal to measurably reduce near misses and incidents. It goes beyond following safety procedures and rules.
In a positive safety culture, all employees are accountable for maintaining standards and procedures. This means management enforces safety standards and understands the requirements for a safe workplace, while on-site employees follow those standards and ensure their colleagues follow them, too.
Safety Culture is about People, Practices and Environment. As organizations and workplaces we should endeavor to be strong culture based.
What does strong culture-based safety mean?
Let’s take a look at each word in turn…
• Culture: the shared values, beliefs and attitudes of a given group, which show themselves as behavior.
• Based: the main principle or starting point.
• Safety: people not getting injured or killed.
A safety culture consists of shared beliefs, practices and mind-sets that exist at an organization and form an atmosphere of attitudes that shape behavior in a positive way. An organization’s safety culture is a direct result of the following factors:
• Management and employee norms, assumptions, and beliefs
• Management and employee attitudes
• Values, myths, and stories
• Policies and procedures
• Supervisor priorities, responsibilities, and accountability
• Production and bottom line pressure versus quality issues
• Actions, or lack thereof, to correct unsafe behaviors
• Employee training and motivation
• Employee involvement and buy-in during the process
A company’s safety culture is a direct reflection of the organization’s overarching culture and the people who work in it. As a result, most employees will gen

In the fourth of a series of reports, commissioned by HSBC, we look at the challenge of harnessing risk management in the service of innovation. Good risk management can identify new business opportunities and be a powerful aid to innovation. However, when the risk function is reduced to a compliance-only role, its strategic benefits are lost.
A to Z of Information Security ManagementMark Conway
The purpose of information security is to protect an organisation’s valuable assets, such as information, Intellectual property, hardware, and software.
Through the selection and application of appropriate safeguards or controls, information security helps an organisation to meet its business objectives by protecting its physical and financial resources, reputation, legal position, employees, and other tangible and intangible assets.
In this A to Z I’d like to outline some of the key focus areas for organisations wishing to pursue compliance to the ISO27001 Information Security standard.
Corporate Safety Governance and Role of LeadeshipConsultivo
Corporate Safety Governance stresses on the need of management intervention to address the issues related to health and safety for the proper functioning of an organisation. High level of health and safety performance is directly linked to business excellence.
This presentation will give you a clear understanding of corporate safety governance and the role of leadership, safety governance pathway, safety culture and factors contributing towards good safety culture within an organisation.
A successful Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) must wear multiple hats. CISOs are accountable for risk management, data protection, and security infrastructure oversight. But that’s not all: a successful CISO must also possess specific traits that distinguish them from other industry leaders.

The International Air Transport Association defines a Safety Management System (SMS) as being a systematic approach to managing safety, including the necessary organizational structures, accountabilities, policies and procedures.
Another definition of an SMS is a businesslike approach to safety. It is a systematic, explicit and comprehensive process for managing safety risks. As with all management systems, a safety management system provides for goal setting, planning, and measuring performance.

www.seribangash.com
A Memorandum of Association (MOA) is a legal document that outlines the fundamental principles and objectives upon which a company operates. It serves as the company's charter or constitution and defines the scope of its activities. Here's a detailed note on the MOA:
Contents of Memorandum of Association:
Name Clause: This clause states the name of the company, which should end with words like "Limited" or "Ltd." for a public limited company and "Private Limited" or "Pvt. Ltd." for a private limited company.
https://seribangash.com/article-of-association-is-legal-doc-of-company/
Registered Office Clause: It specifies the location where the company's registered office is situated. This office is where all official communications and notices are sent.
Objective Clause: This clause delineates the main objectives for which the company is formed. It's important to define these objectives clearly, as the company cannot undertake activities beyond those mentioned in this clause.
www.seribangash.com
Liability Clause: It outlines the extent of liability of the company's members. In the case of companies limited by shares, the liability of members is limited to the amount unpaid on their shares. For companies limited by guarantee, members' liability is limited to the amount they undertake to contribute if the company is wound up.

Capital Clause: This clause specifies the authorized capital of the company, i.e., the maximum amount of share capital the company is authorized to issue. It also mentions the division of this capital into shares and their respective nominal value.
Association Clause: It simply states that the subscribers wish to form a company and agree to become members of it, in accordance with the terms of the MOA.
Importance of Memorandum of Association:
Legal Requirement: The MOA is a legal requirement for the formation of a company. It must be filed with the Registrar of Companies during the incorporation process.
Constitutional Document: It serves as the company's constitutional document, defining its scope, powers, and limitations.
Protection of Members: It protects the interests of the company's members by clearly defining the objectives and limiting their liability.
External Communication: It provides clarity to external parties, such as investors, creditors, and regulatory authorities, regarding the company's objectives and powers.
https://seribangash.com/difference-public-and-private-company-law/
Binding Authority: The company and its members are bound by the provisions of the MOA. Any action taken beyond its scope may be considered ultra vires (beyond the powers) of the company and therefore void.
Amendment of MOA:
While the MOA lays down the company's fundamental principles, it is not entirely immutable. It can be amended, but only under specific circumstances and in compliance with legal procedures. Amendments typically require shareholder

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

10 ways to ensure your safety leadership journey towards vision zero
1.
2. About the presentation
This presentation on Safety Leadership
Journey towards Vision Zero is about the path
ahead - the ten major ways of establishing a
culture of proactive leadership ensuring a
safety culture for everyone.
3. Striving for Vision Zero
The transformational approach of Vision Zero aims to prevent
harm to the people of the industry. It integrates the three
dimensions of safety, health and well-being at all levels.
The vision, approach, comradeship and actions of the safety
leaders bring out the transformation of Vision Zero.
4. How do you work
towards making
‘Vision Zero’ a reality?
5. 1. Infusing Innovation
Leadership must realise that traditional approach alone is not the
solution to our OHS problems. It is important that leadership adopt
new and innovative approaches to tackle problems. They must
ensure that these are infused into the organisation.
Safety can be considered as a focus area for process innovation
within the organisation.
6. 2. Connecting…
New ideas will not be successful unless every employee is taken on
board. This will require adequate awareness, communication and
trust building exercise. Leadership has to convince the rank and file
that they are serious and committed about it. In many instances, fault
lines are detected here.
A feedback-rich environment enhances both communication and
motivation. Positive feedback can act as a consequence that increases
safe behaviour (reinforcement). A safety perception survey may help
an organisation to know the ground reality.
7. 3. Resource Matters
The study shows that there are problems with hierarchy of control.
Most of the time, the apex level of controls like engineering control
or process change needs significant initial investment. In absence of
that, the tendency moves towards the last levels of controls like PPE
and administrative controls; and they are really not very reliable. This
area needs further attention.
Here, good practices include allocation of adequate resources for
safety, may be through a well established budgeting process
considering capital and operational expenses.
8. 4. Managing The Supply Chain Effectively
Supply chain is an important area for improvement. Supply chain
partners present a typical problem. Parent companies have not
much management control over the supply chain members; yet their
contribution towards OHS incidents could be enormous. Leadership
has to find out ways and means to influence the supply chain
members to successfully manage the outcome.
Supply chain safety programmes linked to business benefits always
achieve more success than compliance based approach.
9. 5. Team It Up With Customised Training
Organisations are generally conducting conventional safety
trainings, however, effectiveness is the area of concern.
Customised capacity development programmes shall enhance
safety competence. Knowledge, awareness and behavioural
performances – all of them are to be considered as success
factors.
10. 5. Team It Up With Customised Training
The workplace safety
skills learning process
for the workers
demands completely
different approach than
that of the
management training.
11. 6. Learning & Growing
Learning from the past events is another weak area revealed by the
study. The organisations that do not learn from their past mistakes
cannot grow. The organisations that keep learning from past mistakes
and are able to internalise the lessons learnt are bound to be the
winners.
A well established incident investigation system based on a robust
model is highly recommended to achieve success in this area.
Communications and adoption of issues arising out of unit’s boundary
is also an important source of learning.
12. 7. Influencing The Behaviour Through BBS
Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) is another weak area. Leadership
can influence behaviour which when directed properly develops
into a safe working culture in the organisation. However, it is
important to prepare the employees in Behaviour Based Safety
(BBS) and educate them in this area.
13. The adoption of Behaviour
Based Safety should start from
the leadership team. The BBS
programme should also consider
the local culture and societal
issues to become sustainable.
14. 8. Ensuring Contractors Safety
Contractor’s safety management is another area requiring attention.
Most of the hazardous activities in any industry are typically off
loaded to contractors. We can never achieve Vision Zero unless we
can take our contractors on board.
A robust Contractor Management System with a long term vision
shall be able to prevent harm in this vulnerable area.

16. 9. Is Safety In Your Priority List?
Health and work area monitoring deserve a lot more attention. It is
known that many fatalities in industry occur due to occupational
health alone. This area did not get its due importance perhaps due to
the fact that accidents are instantly visible whereas occupational
diseases take years to show up.
Successfully managed Occupational Health (OH) system may include
use of more competent resources (OH Specialists), Occupational
Health Survey, health database management and creation of more
awareness within the employees.
17. 10. Embracing Technology In
The Safety Excellence Journey
Finally, leadership in use of technology has to be considered as
need of the hour to eliminate, minimise and manage hazards. Use
of smart systems and data analytics can be used as a predictive tool
for OHS risk management. This will make the system more
predictable and reliable.
