From Data Centers to Cloud Services, Inside the Backbone of a New Economy - C...Clipperton Finance
Clipperton Finance, a leading European corporate finance boutique serving the technology and media industries, has released a Research Paper covering the evolution and current trends of the Data Management market.
The essentially virtual “New Economy”, is in fact inherently tied to the very physical world of traditional Data Center and Telecom networks. In this era of online advancement, these physical networks are placed under unprecedented new demands through the proliferation of online rich media and cloud computing leading to an explosion in storage capacity and networking needs. In turn, the virtual data underworld is undergoing a true revolution.
One consequence is remarkable: as the cost and complexity of managing Data Centers increases exponentially, this function is more and more outsourced by the large companies that previously managed their own infrastructure on-site.
This paper focuses on this Outsourced Data Center market and demonstrates how this particular value chain is maturing and organising itself:
· Upstream: a new category of players have rapidly emerged – the Wholesalers.
· Downstream: Hosting offerings are experiencing significant commoditizing pressure and need to act fast.
· In the middle: the “Colocators” need to find there position in this newly organized ecosystem.
Today this value chain is dominated by large US companies, but significant European exceptions exist: OVH in France, Telecity in the UK, 1&1 in Germany.
The paper also features European players that we deem “ones to watch”.
Software-Defined Storage Accelerates Storage Cost Reduction and Service-Level...DataCore Software
- Over 25% of organizations have already invested in software-defined storage (SDS) in 2015, and a further 40% are evaluating options, as SDS can help reduce storage costs while improving service levels and efficiency.
- SDS separates storage services from hardware, allowing more flexible provisioning and management of storage resources. DataCore is one of the leading providers of hardware-independent SDS software.
- DataCore's SDS platform automates storage management across server, flash, SAN, NAS, and cloud storage, helping customers improve performance and availability while reducing costs.

Cloud is one of that kind of digital services that is already here and materialized. Cloud services landscape is becoming more and more dense but still there is a chance for telecom players to take part in that field. Unfortunately, Communication Service Providers are late to come in and therefore it is not sufficient to put computing capacities and just sell them anymore. The economy of scale reached by current industry leaders can barely be beaten even by the largest CSPs. Therefore, some other smarter options should be found to compete with likes of Amazon, Microsoft and Google. This ppt paper is just an effort to think of CSPs role in cloud services domain and any ideas and suggestions for further discussion is very welcome.

Finite element simulation of hybrid welding process for welding 304 austeniti...eSAT Journals
Abstract Although autogenous laser welding has many advantages over traditional welding methods in many applications, still the process has a main disadvantage of poor gap bridging capability, which limits its applicability for wider industrial use. Owing to this limiting factor, a great deal of research work was carried out to overcome this disadvantage by using Arc source with laser welding. The combination of laser and Arc (MIG/TIG) welding processes in a same process zone is known as Hybrid Welding. This process involves very high peak temperature and rapid change in thermal cycle both of which are difficult to measure in real time. In this dissertation work, a 3- dimensional finite element model was developed for the analysis of hybrid welding process. Ansys Parametric Design language (APDL) code was developed for the same. The FEA results were validated with experimental results showing good agreement. Hybrid welding Simulations were carried out for AISI 304 Austenitic stainless Steel plate. The effects of laser beam power, Arc Welding and torch angle on the weld-bead geometry i.e. penetration (DP), welded zone width (BW) were investigated. The experimental plan was based on three factor 5 level central composite rotatable design. Second order polynomial equations for predicting the weld-bead geometry were developed for bead width and depth of penetration. The results indicate that the effect of arc current (AC) on bead width was more than on depth of penetration. Hence, the proposed models predict the responses adequately within the limits of welding parameters being used. Index Terms: Hybrid Welding, Ansys Parametric Design language (APDL), FEA, AISI 304 Austenitic stainless Steel, and Central composite rotatable design

Taming Non-blocking Caches to Improve Isolation in Multicore Real-Time SystemsHeechul Yun
In this paper, we show that cache partitioning does
not necessarily ensure predictable cache performance in modern
COTS multicore platforms that use non-blocking caches to exploit
memory-level-parallelism (MLP).
Through carefully designed experiments using three real COTS
multicore platforms (four distinct CPU architectures) and a cycleaccurate
full system simulator, we show that special hardware
registers in non-blocking caches, known as Miss Status Holding
Registers (MSHRs), which track the status of outstanding cachemisses,
can be a significant source of contention; we observe up
to 21X WCET increase in a real COTS multicore platform due
to MSHR contention.
We propose a hardware and system software (OS) collaborative
approach to efficiently eliminate MSHR contention for
multicore real-time systems. Our approach includes a low-cost
hardware extension that enables dynamic control of per-core
MLP by the OS. Using the hardware extension, the OS scheduler
then globally controls each core’s MLP in such a way that
eliminates MSHR contention and maximizes overall throughput
of the system.
We implement the hardware extension in a cycle-accurate fullsystem
simulator and the scheduler modification in Linux 3.14
kernel. We evaluate the effectiveness of our approach using a set
of synthetic and macro benchmarks. In a case study, we achieve
up to 19% WCET reduction (average: 13%) for a set of EEMBC
benchmarks compared to a baseline cache partitioning setup.
Griffin: Grouping Suspicious Memory-Access Patterns to Improve Understanding...Sangmin Park
Griffin is a technique that aims to improve the understanding of concurrency bugs by grouping suspicious memory access patterns from failing tests. It first performs fault localization to generate ranked lists of memory access patterns, then clusters related tests together based on similarity of patterns. Finally, it reconstructs bugs by clustering patterns based on call stack similarity and identifying suspicious methods and a bug graph.

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a numerical method for solving complex engineering problems. The document discusses conducting FEA on a fixed-free cantilever beam to study the effect of mesh density on solution accuracy. Analytical solutions are derived and used to validate FEA results. A beam model is created in ABAQUS with varying element sizes. As element count increases, FEA results converge towards analytical solutions, though with increased computation time. An element count of 4125 provided an optimal balance between accuracy and cost.

Calculating the true value of industry specific clouds linthicumDavid Linthicum
IDC sees a $65 billion market for industry-specific clouds in 2013, rising to $100 billion by 2016. Industry-specific clouds are PaaS, IaaS, and SaaS services tailored for specific industries that allow businesses within a vertical to connect to predefined applications, processes, and databases. The value is that businesses can leverage existing industry data and processes rather than defining everything within a generic cloud. The session will help determine whether industry-specific clouds make sense for a particular business by examining costs, value of agility, potential for process and service reuse, and how to calculate return on investment.
