Open Source Collaboration and Companies: Finding the Right BalanceDawn Foster
Collaboration within open source projects is becoming increasingly important for companies, but it can be difficult to strike the right balance between the needs of the company and the open source project. This can create friction and put significant pressure on employees who participate on behalf of their company when the needs of the individual, the company, and the community are not aligned. This talk will focus on ways to create this alignment between individuals, companies, and the community to help all of us be successful together.
Building and Communicating Evidence of Effectiveness in OER through Collectiv...Robert Farrow
Much of the evidence surrounding the use (and re-use) of OER is fragmentary or anecdotal. The OLnet project has developed a software tool for effectively gathering, sharing and judging the evidence around key issues of OER. The Evidence Hub distills key insights from the cloud of discussion and opinion creating a thematically indexed, structured ecosystem of organisations, project, issues, recommendations and evidence for the use of those who form the Open Education movement. In this presentation we explain the key concepts behind the Evidence Hub and some of its possible uses.
DARE2HACK: Crowdsourcing ideas through hackathonsShaun West
Organizations are continuously looking for ways to transform by adopting new practices and technologies in order to become more competitive. They target business growth by increasing their efficiencies, by improving their internal operations and/or delivering novel value-added products and services. This is not easy to accomplish, as it requires defining a new strategy, changing the way of working, training and engaging employees and interacting with the customers to address different global trends

Research Policy Monitoring in the Era of Open Science & Big Data Workshop ReportData4Impact
Workshop on Research Policy Monitoring in the Era of Open Science and Big Data was a two day event, co-organised by OpenAIRE and Data4Impact, with support of Science Europe. The event explored mechanisms for research policy monitoring and indicators, and how to link these to infrastructure and services. The first day was focused on open science indicators as these emerge from national and EU initiatives, while the second day explored more advanced aspects of indicators for innovation and societal impact.
Today research visibility is very important in an otherwise crowded digital environment. Here the concept of visibility generated and visibility earned is explained.

Introduction to Implementing the Balanced Value Impact Model - Workshop for N...Simon Tanner
The Balanced Value Impact Model is intended to aid the thinking and decision making of those wishing to engage in Impact Assessment. It also acts as a guide through the process of Impact Assessment to enable the core values most appropriate to the assessment to be brought to the fore and given a balanced consideration when evaluating outcomes. It presumes that the assessment will be measuring change within an ecosystem for a digital resource.
For the purposes of this Model, the definition of Impact is: The measurable outcomes arising from the existence of a digital resource that demonstrate a change in the life or life opportunities of the community.
Who should use the BVI Model?
The aim of this workshop is to provide key information and a strong model for the following primary communities of use:
Memory institutions and cultural heritage organizations, such as libraries, museums and archives.
Funding bodies who wish to promote evidence-based impact assessment of activities they support.
Holders and custodians of special collections.
Managers, project managers and fundraisers who are seeking to justify further investment in digital resources.
Academics looking to establish digital projects and digital scholarship collaborations with collection owners.
Publishing, media and business sectors which may be considering the best means to measure the impact of their digital resources and are looking to collaborate and align with collection owners, with academia or with memory institutions.
Impact Assessment practitioners considering an Impact Assessment of a digital resource.
What the workshop will cover:
Where the value and impact can be found in digital resources,
Who are the beneficiaries gaining from the impact and value,
How to measure change and impact for digital resources,
How to do an Impact Assessment using the Balanced Value Impact Model, and
How to present a convincing evidence-based argument for digital resources?
The Workshop will include case studies of how the BVI Model is being implemented at present.

This is a talk about how Mozilla, the open source browser company, through mixed research methods, defined a strategy for building open source communities at Mozilla. It will detail, how the team used data to prove the findings, coupled with ethnography to shine light on the why and how of those findings. The talk will do this by discussing the key insights and how these fueled recommendation and subsequent change in the organization. It will further outline the argument that the subsequent change achieved could only have been accomplished by a mixed method research approach.

Transforming Brand Perception and Boosting Profitabilityaaryangarg12
In today's digital era, the dynamics of brand perception, consumer behavior, and profitability have been profoundly reshaped by the synergy of branding, social media, and website design. This research paper investigates the transformative power of these elements in influencing how individuals perceive brands and products and how this transformation can be harnessed to drive sales and profitability for businesses.
Through an exploration of brand psychology and consumer behavior, this study sheds light on the intricate ways in which effective branding strategies, strategic social media engagement, and user-centric website design contribute to altering consumers' perceptions. We delve into the principles that underlie successful brand transformations, examining how visual identity, messaging, and storytelling can captivate and resonate with target audiences.
Methodologically, this research employs a comprehensive approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. Real-world case studies illustrate the impact of branding, social media campaigns, and website redesigns on consumer perception, sales figures, and profitability. We assess the various metrics, including brand awareness, customer engagement, conversion rates, and revenue growth, to measure the effectiveness of these strategies.
The results underscore the pivotal role of cohesive branding, social media influence, and website usability in shaping positive brand perceptions, influencing consumer decisions, and ultimately bolstering sales and profitability. This paper provides actionable insights and strategic recommendations for businesses seeking to leverage branding, social media, and website design as potent tools to enhance their market position and financial success.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

Why now

How did a bunch of amateurs who really didn't know what we were doing somehow come together and do what NGOs
and the government were completely incapable of doing? And I would suggest that this has something to do with the
Internet. It's not a fluke. It wasn't luck. And it wasn't because it was us. It helped that it was a event that pulled everybody
together, but it was a new way of doing things that was enabled by the Internet and a lot of the other things that were
going on.
What happened after the Internet was the cost of innovation went down so much because the cost of collaboration, the
cost of distribution, the cost of communication and Moore's Law made it so that the cost of trying a new thing became
nearly zero. And so you would have Google, Facebook, Yahoo students that didn't have permission - permissionless (ph)
innovation - didn't have permission, didn't have PowerPoints. They just built the thing. Then they raised the money. And
then they sort of figured out a business plan. And maybe later on, they hired some MBAs.

Moore's Law
Moore's prediction proved accurate for several decades,
and has been used in the semiconductor industry to
guide long-term planning and to set targets for
research and development. Advancements in digital
electronics are strongly linked to Moore's law: quality-
adjusted microprocessor prices, memory capacity,
sensors and even the number and size of pixels in digital
cameras. Digital electronics has contributed to world
economic growth in the late twentieth and early twenty-
first centuries. Moore's law describes a driving force of
technological and social change, productivity, and
economic growth.
