Telemedicine, or remote health care services accessed electronically, has the potential to significantly reduce health care costs for employers while also increasing productivity by reducing employee doctor visits. A recent study found that telemedicine could save U.S. companies up to $6 billion per year. Some employers are already seeing reductions in lost time from work for medical appointments of around half a day per employee through the use of telemedicine. However, concerns remain around regulatory issues, privacy and security risks when transmitting health information remotely.
