1. STOP-MOTION ANIMATION
What is a Frame? In video and animation, frames are individual pictures in a sequence of images. For example, a Flash movie
you see on the Web may play 12 frames per second, creating the appearance of motion. Most video is shot at
24 or 30 frames per second, or FPS. FPS is often measured in 3D games as a way of checking how fast the
graphics processor of a computer is.
What is frame -
rate?
Frame rate (expressed in frames per second or fps) is the frequency (rate) at which consecutive images called
frames appear on a display. The term applies equally to film and video cameras, computer graphics, and
motion capture systems.
In motion pictures and television, the frame rates are standardized by the Society of Motion Picture and
Television Editors (SMPTE). SMPTE Time Code frame rates of 24, 25 and 30 frames per second are
common, each having uses in different portions of the industry. The professional frame rate for motion
pictures is 24 frames per second and, for television, 30 frames per second (in the U.S.).

Animation is the illusion of movement created by showing a series of still pictures in rapid succession. In the
world of computers, graphics software used to create this effect.

Stop motion is an animated-film making technique in which objects are physically manipulated in small
increments between individually photographed frames so that they will appear to exhibit independent motion
when the series of frames is played back as a fast sequence.
Assets used Action figures, plastic figurines, LEGO pieces, Kinex, paper cutouts, drawings, plasticine, or Play-Doh to
create scenes.

Why use
Stop-motion
animation for
classroom
assignments?
It helps young students learn to break down, analyze, and re-create an event in small, bite-sized pieces.
Consider using it in a science class, for example, to have students demonstrate the evolution of a process, such
as the ​water cycle ​showing the stages of transpiration, precipitation, and so forth. Maybe it’s the ​life cycle of
a butterfly.
Re-create events. Use it in a social science class to get students to re-create a famous scene from history, such
as the Battle of Little BigHorn or the American soldiers raising the flag on Iwo Jima in World War II.
