The document discusses differences between generations, particularly millennials born after 1980. Key points:
1) Millennials are more likely to use technology/social media, have tattoos, and be less religious than older generations.
2) Millennials place more importance on parenting and marriage due to more divorce among their parents.
3) Millennials are more tolerant of social change and supportive of immigrants compared to older generations.
4) Millennials are more optimistic about the country's direction than older generations who experienced economic downturns.
A generation gap is widening in the workplace. As baby boomers (ages 51 to 69 or so) express reluctance about retiring, so-called millennials (roughly ages 18 to 34) have become the single largest demographic in the American labor force. Because of this, more older workers have found themselves being hired and managed by people much younger than they are.

Family interactions are most important during early childhood, but they can have long-lasting effects. In early adolescence, relationships with peers take on greater importance. Family structure and family functioning are two general categories under which family effects on delinquency.
Increased risk of delinquency experienced among children of broken homes is related to the family conflict prior to the divorce or separation, rather than to family breakup itself (Rutter et al., 1998).

Evidence-Based Juvenile Justice—intervention: Family Key Programs
KEAIRA BROWN WAS JUST 13 YEARS OLD when she was charged with murder and became the youngest person in Wyandotte County, Kansas, ever to be tried as an adult. Her family life was close but troubled. Her mother, Cheryl Brown, had three other children, two enrolled in local colleges. Keaira was involved in after-school activities, including playing the violin. But when her mom went to prison on a drug charge, things began to spiral downhill for Keaira, and when she was only 10 she attempted suicide. On July 23, 2008, at about 4:00 PM, Keaira was supposed to be at a summer program at the Boys and Girls Club in Kansas City. Instead, she was involved in the carjacking of Scott Sappington, Jr., a junior at Sumner Academy, who had just dropped his siblings off at their grandmother’s house. When he returned to his car, neighbors heard him yell, “Hey, hey,” then there was a struggle inside the car, and he was shot in the head. An investigation led to a 6-year-old who told police that a young girl told a group of children to get rid of her bloody clothes. Police distributed pictures of the bloody clothes to the media, and soon after, the clothes were traced back to Keaira Brown.
Prosecutors thought the murder was a result of a carjacking that went wrong, while Keaira’s family claimed she was an innocent pawn for area gang members who thought she woul.

2. Summary
• As new generations are born,
researchers like to study the
differences in one generation, to
the previous generation and so
forth. My generation is the
millennial generation, then
Generation X, the Baby
Boomer, and the Silent
Generation. The Millennial
generation is anyone born after
1980. Generation X is people
born between 1965 and 1980.
the Baby Boomer generation is
from 1946 to 1964 and lastly the
Silent Generation is people born
from 1928 to 1945.
• When members of each
generation were asked what
made their generation unique,
some of the different responses
were: technology use,
tolerance, work ethic,
intelligence, and respect. The
priorities of each generation
have also changed. What might
be important to the Baby
Boomer generation is probably
not as important to the
Millennial generation. This topic
is not a subject that we are in a
dire need to educate the public
on, but the information and the
differences between parents
and their children is very
interesting.
3. Interest 1
• One of the bigger differences is
technology. “Three-quarters [of the
Millennial generation] have created
a profile on a social networking site.
Generation X only has fifty percent
of the generation on a social
networking site. The Baby Boomer
generation only has thirty percent
and the Silent generation only has
about six percent. This generation
also has “nearly four-in-ten [with] a
tattoo.” However “one is not enough”
and usually have about five to six.
This generation is becoming more
open and expressive because we
have been the most accepting
compared to our parents and
grandparents and have allowed
people to feel like they can do
things, such as get tattoos and
piercings when they were never
• The Millennial generation is also
“less religious, less likely to have
served in the military, and are on
track to become the most educated
generation in American history.” The
Millennial are less religious because
they have become more tolerant of
different ideas and have a general
belief in God but do not have
specific beliefs about a religion.
America is not personally threatened
by another country to go to war. We
help out where we can but we are
not threatened and in need of more
members in our military like the
Silent generation was. We have also
been pushed more in school and
have more work than our parents
did, making school more of a priority
than it has been with previous
4. Interest 2
• In the Millennial generation “only
about six-in-ten were raised by both
parents” which is a lot less than
older generations. Because of this
our priorities are different from our
parents and grandparents. Fifty-two
percent believe the most important
thing in their life is to be a good
parent. Thirty percent believe it is to
have a successful marriage. Twenty-
one percent believe it should be to
help others in need. Due to the
Millennial generations lack of being
raised by both parents they believe
that is the most important thing for
them to do. Along with that, since
more and more parents went
through divorces we believe having
a successful marriage is very
necessary to do what our parents
could not do to make life at home
• Unlike the Silent generation and
the Baby Boomer generation who
were hard working people, the
Millennial generation ranks having
a high-paying career, living a
religious life, and owning a home
are not as important as what goes
on in the home. Since the older
generations were focused on
working to make money to
support their families, home life
slowly began to fall apart. Now
that the majority of a generation
had to deal with the loss of a
successful home life, their
priorities have shifted from money
to parenting and marriage. “Just
one-in-five Millennials are married
now, half the share of their
parents’ generation at the same
5. Interest 3
• The idea of tolerance has really set the Millennial generation
apart. Things that people think are bad for society, such as: single
women deciding to have children, gay couples raising children,
mothers working outside of the home, people living together
without getting married, and different races getting married have
about a twenty percent difference of acceptance by the Millennial
generation than the Silent generation. The Millennials are more
ready and open to change than any other generation. Along with
these ideas, Millennials are also “more receptive to immigrants
than are their elders.” My generation feels “immigrants strengthen
the country.”
• Older generations have more traditional values about mothers
with young children working and people who are not married living
together. These used to be completely unacceptable to most
people in older generations. Because the Millennials are more
tolerant and liberal, their ideas of traditions have changed. Also
because this generation has gone through so much more divorce
and being raised by a single parent they do not see a difference to
being raised by a gay couple or a mother who works outside of the
home.
6. Interest 4
• The generation gap is becoming more and more
noticeable. Forty-one percent of Millennials “say they are
satisfied with the way things are going in the country,
compared with just twenty-six percent of those ages 30
and older.” It seems that even though there has been a
toll recession, a housing crisis, a financial meltdown, and
a pair of wars the affected age group seems to be
Generation X and older.
• Because the Millennial generation seems to be unaware
of these grueling aspects that have hit the older
generations, this younger generation seems to be “more
upbeat than their elders.” The biggest gap between the
Millennials and any other generation is the “different
ways that old and young use technology.” However it is
noted that very few people view this gap between the
young and old as a source of conflict. “They see big
conflicts between immigrants and native born, rich and
7. Concern?
• This topic of differences between generations is not
an issue that needs to be pushed to the public to
educate everyone. This topic is mainly a source of
interesting differences between us and our parents
and grandparents. It is a topic where the information
discussed might include you and it might not. It is
the majority of the public to compare past and
present generations.
