TEEN SUICIDE
Teen Suicide Statistics
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death for teenagers – it's the third leading cause of death.
Every 17 minutes a teen succeeds in taking life.
Teen suicide is a very real problem, causing the deaths of thousands of teenagers across the country
each year. Teen suicide statistics shed light on the problem, and offer insights as to who might need
help, and how to help them.
Teen suicide attempts are calls for help
Many teenagers have thoughts of death. It is important to take suicide attempts seriously.
National Institute of Mental Health believes that as many as 25 suicides are attempted for each one
that is completed. That means that for every teen suicide that you hear of, there are ... Show more

Teen Suicide
Each year, one out of thirteen teens age nineteen and under attempts suicide (Preface). Personally,
that is more than enough teens choosing to take their lives each year. It isn't really easy to figure out
why some teens choose to take their lives. Suicide is a multi–faceted issue, sometimes an act of
courage, sometimes an act of selfishness, sometimes a brave choice in the face of pain, and
sometimes an act of fondness. It is important to understand why some choose to take their lives and
some ways that in school and out of school we as individuals are able to help those in need.
According to the author of the book Suicide Among Gifted Children and Adolescents Tracy Cross;
suicide is both visible and able to be averted. Sometimes when ... Show more content on

Like the 16 years old teenager I was at that moment the first thing I do is grab my phone. As I go on
Instagram I see a post about a familiar person that I usually see around school and have had
interactions with once or twice. I sit up on the bed to read the description that states "Rip to one of
our falcons". After reading the post I still felt as though it wasn't true. I continued to go down my
feed and I saw the second post about it and a third one. I contacted one of my friends to see if it was
true and she told me that the boy committed suicide. I've never felt so bad and such anger towards
someone dying. This boy had a whole life ahead of him; he was a freshman in varsity football, he
was taking honors classes, and everyone knew him as a great person. I was so in shock that tears
started to fall down my cheeks. I wonder the whole day why would he choose to take his own life?
What could we have done to prevent him from committing suicide? A few days later one of his close
friend that was like a brother to him also took his own life. I was out of words, everyone in the
county was showing their love and saying things like "I'll be sure to keep their families in my
prayers" nothing made me angrier. No one really thought that those two guys would be the type to
take their lives away. It's always the people that we don't think would choose to take their life ends
up doing it. Everyone is wondering what they could've done to stop them from committing

Suicide And Suicide : Solution To Preventing Teen Suicide
Preventing Teen Suicide
According to the World Health Organization, "Suicide has surpassed homicide to become the
second leading cause of death among ten to twenty–nine–year–olds; in 2012, suicide claimed the
lives of more than five–thousand people within this age bracket" (Onieal 14). Five–thousand young
people felt that the weight of the problems they were faced with was too much to handle, and
suicide was the only solution. As a teen who struggled with clinical depression and anxiety, this is
an issue that is very real to me. So many of these suicides could have been prevented if we were
more aware of how many teens are struggling with depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses,
and offered our support and strength to those who feel too weak to hold on any longer. There are a
lot of pressures on teens in today's society, such as achieving good grades, managing a heavy school
load, parents getting divorced, break–ups with boyfriends and girlfriends, trying to conform to the
standards of beauty we see on social media, bullies at school, and functioning with not nearly
enough of sleep. When combined, these pressures can be so stressful that they can cause serious
anxiety and mental illness. Janis Whitlock, director of the Cornell Research Program on Self–Injury
and Recovery says, "If you wanted to create an environment to churn out really angsty people,
we've done it. It's that they're in a cauldron of stimulus they can't get away from, or don't want to get
away from, or don't know how to get away from." One of the most effective ways to prevent suicide
is to provide awareness and educate students, parents, school officials, community members and
peers on how to identify suicidal signs (Shireen, Janapana, Rehmatullah, Temuri, Azim 210). When
someone commits suicide, we often hear things like, "I never saw it coming," or "they seemed fine."
When someone is struggling and nobody notices, it makes them feel unloved and like no one cares
about them, which can cause suicidal thoughts. If we were more aware of signs of depression,
anxiety, or suicidal behaviors, we could make somebody struggling feel loved, supported, and
hopeful, and encourage them to seek out professional help. Not only does suicide take

Suicide is a growing problem in American culture. Sadly, teens are affected the most. Teen suicide is
increasing rapidly. "About 5,000 teens in the United States kill themselves each year" (Peacock, 4).
Suicide among teens is a serious and devastating crisis. More teens are taking their lives today than
ever before. Teen suicide does not affect one specific type of teen; it affects any type of teen. There
are a variety of reasons teens resort to committing suicide. Many people are working for the
prevention of teen suicide. Teen suicide needs to be viewed as a serious problem, analyzed, and
prevented.

Violence at home has a lot of impact. Watching violent things can hurt a teens mind and make them
want to end the violence therefore they take their life. Teens may not be able to handle one more
situation, even the smallest things, ending a relationship, failing at school, or getting blamed for
something, all those things can trigger suicidal thoughts. Drugs and alcohol can affect teens too.
"Drugs and alcohol increase thinking and anger" (Peacock, 19). "Problems with sexual identity,
pregnancy, or pressures to succeed also can play a role" (Peacock, 16).Sexual Identity causes
suicide. Teens that struggle with a different sexual identity; struggle with keeping it a secret. Teens
that come out may be treated as outcasts. The frequently get named–called, bullied, and other
harassments. Girls that deal with a teen pregnancy take their life because of embarrassment to
family, peers, and the father of the child. Talent kids have suicide attempts. The pressure to succeed
is overwhelming and they cannot take it anymore. "In general, teens who kill themselves want to
escape overpowering problems and painful feelings" (Peacock, 10). The number one thing that
triggers suicidal thoughts is depression. Depression is a serious mental illness. More than 60 percent
of all people who killed themselves dealt with depression (Peacock, 18). Depression is the number

Schools across the nation need to take a more proactive step to prevent teen suicide by giving their
students and staff more of an education. For example the Ontario Shores Mental Health Science
wants schools to be more aware also; "Last week the Durham school boards announced a new
curriculum to teach teachers about mental illness in youth, funded by the Ontario Shores Centre for
Mental Health Sciences in Whitby." ( Scallan and Chantaie). A town in Ontario brought this issue of
teen suicide up to the school board. The school board took a look at it and made a new course for
the teacher so they can be more educated on this specific topic. In Ontario, where the school decided
to add a new curriculum for teachers. The course is funded by the Ontario shore centre for mental
health science. This specific town is one of the many that are starting to talk about teen suicide and
making it a topic of discussion. With teacher having even more knowledge they already do, they
will be able to give the right information and know what to look out for. In addition, there are many
factors that could make a student more at risk of having any suicidal actions. The Centers for
disease Control and Prevention stated a list of many elements to look for , "Risk factors: History of
previous suicide attempts, Family history of suicide, History of depression or other mental illness,

Life is the most wonderful thing God could ever give us. Throughout our lives we learn and
experience new things as the years past. From learning to walk then talk all the way to learning how
to take care of not only yourself but others. From experiencing loneliness, happiness and
unconditional love. If life should be cherished why end it so soon?
Suicide the most common way to get out of any hard situation that life throws at you. What exactly
is the meaning of the word suicide? Well suicide is the act or an instance of taking one's own life
voluntarily and intentionally especially by a person of years of discretion and of sound mind.

The reasons for this are boys are 1.5 times as likely to be involved in crimes, and they are more
likely to be diagnosed with affection deficit disorder and mental illnesses than girls are. Also
Suicide rates different between boys and girls. Girls think about and attempt suicide about twice as
often as boys, and tend to attempt suicide by overdosing on drugs or cutting themselves. While boys
die by suicide about four times as often girls, this is because they tend to use methods that kill you
faster, such as firearms, hanging, or jumping from heights. As you can see the results of teen
suicides have increased by numbers over the years. The risk of suicide increases dramatically when
there is access to firearm at home, and nearly sixty percent of all suicides in the United States are
committed with a gun. That's is why any gun in your home should be unloaded, locked, and kept out
of the reach of children and teens. Overdose using over–the–counter, prescription, and non–
prescription medicine is also a very common method for both attempting and completing suicide. It
is important to keep track of all medications in your home.
Teen suicide is indeed preventable, when in uncertainty of life or death all teens need is support
from their family and friends. When teens get thoughts of suicide they tend to become distant from
their family and peers, which are the people they need the most in a time like this. Teens need to
know the satisfactions of life, and

Each year, thousands of children are dying, not from cancer, getting shot, or car accidents, but by
their own hands. They make the choice to take their lives; they commit suicide. To begin, what is
"Suicide"? According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, suicide is the act or instance of taking
one's own life voluntarily and intentionally. The number of teenagers who take their lives is rapidly
increasing each year. Teen suicide is escalating out of control and no one seems to realize just how
severe the issue has become. Every day and average of 18 young Americans end their lives, one
every 90 minutes. The National Institute of Mental Health believes that as many as 50–150 suicides

Sexual and physical abuse are also contributing causes to the teen suicide epidemic. From these
types of abuse usually depression and other psychological disorders form, making the risk of these
youth committing suicide very high. Family support is important as well, "A Teen with an adequate
support network of friends, family, and religious affiliations, peer groups or extracurricular activities
may have an outlet to deal with everyday frustrations, but many teen's don't believe they have that,
and feel disconnected and isolated from family and friends. These teens have an increased risk for
suicide" (kidsHealth.org). Additionally the issue of sexuality and an unsupportive family or peer
group is also detrimental to the teen's psyche and plays a major role in teen suicide. Lastly, sudden
trauma in a teen's life is very influential on a suicide decision. The loss of a parent, sibling, or loved
one can cause the teen to react by committing or attempting suicide. Teenagers are more at risk
because they are in a stage of growth in their lives, and thus the depression or trauma can create a
feeling of isolation in their mind. In most cases there are ways to detect when a person is planning to
commit suicide before they actually carry it out. Teen suicide can be prevented when the warning
signs are recognized early on. It is stated in many studies that teen suicide attempts have been
preceded by clear warning

Teen suicide in Colorado is at an all time high. It has become one of the biggest social problems
affecting all our lives in one way or another. It is a day–to–day experience and everyday news in our
society. It is the third leading cause of death within today's youth (Collegian). Along with so many
other things in the world that bring tragedy, it can be prevented. Douglas County needs to consider
preventing teen suicide by providing better, safer hotlines and resources, learning how to help peers
when they are down, and changing society's unrealistic expectations.
According to the Denver Post, Colorado's suicide rate, is one of the highest in the country.
Statewide, 50 young people ages 10–18 died by suicide in 2014. That number jumped to 72 in 2015
and remained high at 68 in 2016, according to state health department data. This year, 2017,
colorado has already handled eight teen suicides with three of them happening just last month.

Suicide is a very complex issue to understand. According to Colorado Dept. of Public Health and
Environment, "The role social media plays in teen suicide and depression is also complex", she said.
It connects people going through similar problems even when they aren't close geographically, yet,
on the flip side, the filtered selfies and endless posts of others having fun can plummet teens' self
esteem. Self–injury, such as cutting and burning, is also a

Talking about teen suicide can be a very uncomfortable subject to discuss. For those who have lost a
child or a teen close to them, or those in the middle of a battle for a teen's life. For those who are
afraid to bring the topic up with their teen for fear of planting ideas in their head. With assertive
sensitivity we will look at the statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
on suicide percentage rates in teens, possible warning signs to watch for, safety measures for teens
in crisis, seeking professional help, and last but most important, opening the lines of
communication.

Nearly 60% of suicides in the United States are committed with a gun. Firearms should be kept in
lockboxes or safes that only you or another adult in the house has access to. Another very common
method for attempting suicide is over the counter prescription drugs should be stored in a safe place
as well.
I know we all want to respect our teenager's space and do anything that would make the situation
worse or get them more upset than they already are. But, when teens are in crisis there is nothing
wrong with parents checking in their belongings for their safety. Nothing is more important than
saving a child's life. If at any point you feel your child in in immediate danger you should bring
your child to the emergency room. Remember, "Prevention is worth a pound of cure." If you see
warning signs, talk to your teenager's Primary care. They can give you referrals to a Psychiatrist or
other mental health professional that can assist you. Make an appointment, if your child refuses to
go, go by yourself and discuss what's going on.
Gather as much information as you can about teen suicide, what to watch for, and some approaches
to you teen you may not know or have thought of know. Know the recourses available to you and
your child. Sometimes adults feel that teens who threaten to hurt themselves are just doing for

Teen Suicide Prevention: Putting Meaning Back Into the Lives of Young
"Statistics reveal that in the US approximately...nearly one million people attempt suicide each year"
("Suicide Risk Among Abused Children."). Suicide is not an act of randomness. It is a result of
prolonged feelings and/ or events, which push that person to extremes they desperately want out of.
Suicide rates are amongst the highest in teens, due to their lack of support systems. During these
years many are trying to find–out who they are and fit in, thus many get accepted into some people's
views, but there are also a good number that get ignored and feel like they do not belong anywhere.
Teen suicide can be a result of a home–life of abuse or mistreatment, psychological disorders, and
lack of social support–bullying; however, through the education on the warning signs of suicide,
providing more emotional outlets at schools, and creating safer environments the number of annual
victims can be decreased. Living in a house full of mistreatment and abuse can eat away at a
teenager more than many would like to admit. Abuse (physical, sexual, psychological) has no
benefits, instead it causes individuals to see themselves as not enough and that they are not wanted
anywhere. Teenagers are already vulnerable to the pressures of high school, and trying to find
themselves. In school there are many stressors– such as grades, friends, teachers,

The Causes Of Teen Suicide
Teen Suicide
According to a statistician at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for
Health Statistics, "Suicide is the third leading cause of death in the U.S." (Miniño) Suicide is not a
pretty or fun topic. Teen suicide is not to be taken lightly. This is a real thing that many teens are
struggling with. Even if a teen is healthy and normal, most will deal with suicidal thoughts at some
points in their young lives. Suicide is a sad, scary, and sickening thing. Thousands of teens in the
U.S. are committing suicide year round and people need to better understand its seriousness.
Bullying is one of the many triggers that can lead teens to suicide. People are bullies for many
different reasons. It could be to make themselves feel better about their appearance or home life. It
could be that they are just truly mean inside. For whatever reason that people bully, it is always
wrong. Bullying seems like no big deal until you see that the effects can be disastrous.
"Cyberbullying pushed an 18–year–old over the edge, leading her to shoot herself in the chest
Tuesday afternoon at the family's Texas City home as family members watched" ( It can lead to
depression, self–loathing, or even suicide. It is important to understand that most suicides are not
just random acts; there is usually a trigger behind them. "Students who are bullied are more than
twice as likely to attempt suicide than those who aren't bullied" (Preventing Teen suicide).
School is another thing that can trigger suicide in teens. School can be extremely stressful for a
young teen. Most of the time it is because they can not manage their time to make everything
balance out. They wake up early and go to school all morning and afternoon then they have
extracurricular activities, like sports, in the evening. By the time they get home its already late and
they still have to do their homework and get ready for the next day. School is such a big stress point
for teen that "September is Suicide Prevention Month; September 7–13 is National Suicide
Prevention Week; and September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day" (Preventing Teen Suicide). A
lot of schools try and come together to prevent suicide in the schools during this

"While teens are taking fewer drugs than they have in years suicide remains a problem so
entrenched that it is prompting the medical community to re–evaluate how it identifies and treats
suicidal adolescents" (Anna Mulrine 1). More than 500 schools are offering depression screenings in
the upcoming school year, because eight percent of students in high school attempted suicide last
year. School counselors should have special training to know when to recognize students who could
possibly be suicidal, but over one third of them cannot identify them. Parents should simply ask
their child if they have ever thought of killing their self; it is better to know before and get them help
than having to plan their funeral. If they are depressed, there are people who can help them
overcome that obstacle in life. Jessica attempted to kill herself when she was thirteen years old.
When she recovered she told her coach she just wanted attention, but just before her school
graduation, she swallowed enough pills to put her in a coma for three days. When she awoke she

The Issue Of Teen Suicide
"Everyday, I think why I'm still here." –Amanda Michelle Todd September 7, 2012. What if your
friend wanted to commit suicide? What's the first thing you would do? Scream? Cry? Help? Many
people wish they had helped their friend after they commit suicide. Being the victim is scary, being
the witness is scarier, and being the bystander is the scariest. Suicide has been a problem for a very
long time. It can be caused by stress, anxiety, bullying, and mental illnesses.
Teen suicide is a huge problem because there are so many situations that can stress you out and just
make you give up, especially as a teen. Almost everyone has or will have a story at some point in
their life involving suicide. Not only are the victims affected, but the people around them. Some
people hide this because they are ashamed but once one person commits suicide in a family it is
likely someone else will.
This paper is about three things. 1. The history and background of teen suicide. 2. The short and
long term effects of teen suicide. Last but not least, 3. Solutions to teen suicide.
For the history and background of teen suicide we will talk about what causes a suicidal mindset
and what part of the brain sends suicidal signals. In the short and long term effects it will talk about
how teen suicide affects the parents emotions. In the solutions it will talk about what social media
influences the teens.

For example, someone who is thinking of teen suicide most likely will not ask for help. People
around that person should realize the signs of a suicidal person and should get them help. That
person most likely does not want to die, they more or less just want to stop hurting, whether it be
physical pain, or mental pain. If other people take the signs of suicide seriously, that could lead to
prevention of suicide. If people openly talk to the person thinking about suicide, that action could
save that person. Suicidal people are normally in so much pain that they believe that killing
themselves is the only way to escape that pain, and go to a better place where they can be happy and
not in pain. Each year, more than 1 million people die of suicide. Some things people should not do
around a suicidal person however, are don't take someone saying they will commit suicide as a joke
and start to laugh at them. Don't call that person crazy or insane. More than half of suicidal people
actually seek the help that they need, however people who are determined to take their own lives
will. No matter the repercussions. There are warning signs of suicide. For instance, someone who is
talking about or mentioning suicide a lot could possibly mean that they want to commit suicide.

Teen Suicide And Suicide
Recent studies have shown a rise in both teen suicides and self–harm among adolescent girls.
Suicide among adolescent girls may occur as a result of mental disorders, drug misuse, cultural,
family and social situations, genetics, and most of all, cyberbullying (Ehmke). Based on a 2015
study, about 20% of adolescent girls in the U.S. consider suicide and between 5% and 8% of them
attempt suicide each year (Ehmke). In 2014 alone, 150 girls out of 10 million, between the ages of
ten and fourteen, committed suicide due to cyberbullying among other related factors (Graham).
Medical experts warn that excessive social media and smartphone use may lead to cyberbullying.
Most victims of cyberbullying often experience a great deal of stress and anxiety leading to suicidal
ideation (Ehmke). An analysis by Jean Twenge, in The Atlantic, confirms that cyberbullying is more
strongly related to suicidal thoughts in adolescents than traditional bullying (Twenge). Some
estimates suggest that – depending on the country of origin – between 5% and 20% of adolescent
girls are victims of physical, verbal or exclusion–based bullying, while 15% to 30% of them are
victims of cyberbullying (Twenge). The relationship between cyberbullying and suicide has only
been explored in a few studies, but Jean Twenge's analysis strongly suggests that cyberbullying is a
major risk factor for suicide ideation in adolescent girls (Twenge).
The new analysis by Jean Twenge tests this evidence by reviewing all

Suicide of any kind is an act in which a person takes his or her own life. FACT: Suicide is a
prevalent cause of death among America's youth today. Every day more than 1000 teenagers will
think about suicide and eighteen will be successful in committing it. It is an ever–growing problem
that can be described as unnecessary and uncalled for. Knowledge and understanding are key factors
to preventing teenage suicide. The problem will usually originate from a period of depression, either
as a medical concern, or simply because of a saddened event in a person's life. The bottom line is,
suicide among teens is not a rare event, and it may be preventable with the proper treatment.

In their depression, they often dwell on what they feel is their unlucky and helpless lot in life,
repeatedly leading them to believe that their situation is hopeless.
FACT: Few suicides happen without some kind of warning. Most teenagers who have attempted or
committed suicide will leave several hints and warning signs along the way. They will say or do
things to let others know they are in trouble and thinking about dying. A more common occurrence
is the young person frequently talking about death or that no one would miss them if they were
gone. Some even give away personal belongings. Few will keep their intent to die an absolute secret
from everyone, and some even tell friends about their plans (Nelson & Galas 25).
Many people may begin to do more dangerous acts, like reckless driving or minor acts like not
wearing a seatbelt in a car, when they are feeling suicidal
(http://www.harthosp.org/HealthInfo/scripts/scr0341.htm). After all, an accident will only make
dying easier. Deep down teens are scared to die. They may come to the point where they do not care
if they die, but most fear it the minute they come close to touching it, especially if they are the ones
doing it themselves. Besides the suicides mistakenly labeled as "accidents", many suicides go
unreported. It is painful for families to admit that their children have committed suicide (Nelson &

The access for committing suicide must be restricted to young adults.
Life as a teenager may not be as easy as some people might think. Suicide may be what teenagers
believe will be best for them. Young adults think it is the solution to all of their problems and stress.
It can also be caused by a series of emotions. There are many complications that teenagers might be
facing thinking they cannot be solved. Depression is the most common cause of teenage suicide.
There are teens that might want to "socially fit in, academically fit in, and act responsibly." (About

themselves for feeling that they are not good enough for anything. Teens might be dealing with
bisexuality or homosexuality in an environment that is unsupportive. Breaking up with a boyfriend

his or her life, they may not be joking. We need to educate ourselves about how serious the problem
is, why teens would consider suicide, and what we can do if we know someone who's considering
suicide.
How bad can it be?
Many teens may not even know how serious suicide can possibly be. Suicide can't be taken as a
joke. If you feel like taking your life or have suicidal thoughts, talk to your parents, friends or

We have all experienced this feeling at least once in our life; the feeling of not being good enough,
the feeling of always getting the short end of the stick one would say. Some individuals have felt
this for only a few days, some for a few weeks but for others this certain type of negative feeling
never goes away until the person does something about it mentally or physically. That something
can lead a person to the point they think the only way out is ending their own life. Suicide is a topic
that cannot be overlooked. Teen suicide is the third leading cause of death in today's youth. With
these statistics, the question rises are teenagers asking adults for help or are adults ignoring the

Good friendships gained in school will last long past graduation day. People never think it would be
their friend they lose to suicide, it happens. Everyone likes to push it aside and not talk about it but
communicating with others can make a difference. That is exactly how Ben Finnie felt when his
cousin named Kaleigh Finnie ended her own life as a college student. A daily national morning talk
show also known as The Today Show interviewed Ben about his way of spreading the word about
suicide prevention. Ben is addressing this issue by working among more than two thousand high
school and college students through the Direct Change program in California by creating sixty
second public service announcements videos to raise awareness about mental illness and suicide.

Teen Depression And Suicide
Teen Depression and Suicide
Mother Teresa once said, "Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible
poverty." Studies have shown that approximately 20% of teens experience depression before they
reach adulthood. According to the American Psychiatric Association, depression is a common and
serious mental illness that negatively affects how you feel and act. While it is treatable through
therapy or medication, only 1 in 3 teens who suffer from depression receive the treatment they need
after their diagnosis. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young adults ages 15 to 24– in
fact, studies have shown that someone takes their own life every 100 minutes. Young adults with
enormous potential are taking their own lives at alarming rates, and these numbers may very well
continue to increase unless we band together as a society to take action. In order to help teens with
depression eliminate the risk of suicide, doctors must administer depression screenings, teachers
must be trained on how to deal with and respond to mental illnesses, and parents must be educated
on the signs and treatment of depression. One way to help teens with undiagnosed depression get
help is to add screenings for depression to routine doctor checkups for patients ages 12 to 18.
Depression screenings may be presented as a short questionnaire or a simple conversation with your
doctor in which you are asked about your feelings and behaviors. The process usually takes only

Teen Suicide is dangerous. You might think your child's not at risk, that they are completely fine.

Sources of Strength helps other teens realize that they're not alone in this. That there are others like
them, who have already overcome what they are battling right now. And that it's not impossible for
them to win the fight. Many people will think, there are too many kids in the world to really make a
difference, and suicide is only an issue when children are treated poorly. In another article Stacy
Khadaroo quotes Jill Harkavy–Friedman, senior director of research at the American Foundation for
Suicide Prevention in New York, "If people oversimplify youth suicide and always link it to
bullying, parents might think, 'Oh, my child is not being bullied, so my child is not at risk,'"(
Khadaroo 1). You need to be aware of suicide symptoms and, if families would sit down and talk
with their children about this, suicide rates should drop. That's all it takes a conversation, no
fundraising, just a simple talk. After, the chances of your child telling you if they've been having
suicidal thoughts will rise increasingly. "Any mention of suicide or death must be taken seriously.
Often parents, other adults, and friends ignore these potential cries for help and only recognize that
they should have done something after a teen has attempted or committed suicide"( Teen Suicide 1).

Causes Of Teen Suicide
Teen Suicide
Teenage suicide is a major public health concern in the United States. According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention there were approximately 5,079 suicides in 2015. This occurred
mainly between the age of 15 and 19. This is the second leading cause of death among this age
group. There are different reasons why teenagers may have suicidal thoughts and commit suicide.
This essay will identify the different causes of suicide among teenagers and propose solutions to the
problem. Teen suicide may be defined as the intentional act of a teenager ending his or her own life.
Teen suicide attempts are more common among females when compared to males even though male
teenagers are the ones who actually carry out the act of suicide. The higher rates of suicide in the
United States are attributed to the changes in the suicide methods. Suffocation which happens
through strangulation and hanging is the most lethal method of suicide that is considered by
teenagers. The other forms of suicide that are used by teenagers include firearm suicide in which the
teenagers use firearms to end their lives (Holliday and Vandermause 168). Teen suicide affects both
male and female teenagers even though males are at an increased risk of suicide. Teen suicide rates
in the United States doubled between 1960s and 1990s. There is no clear explanation on this trend
even though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention attributes this to increased reporting.

Teen suicide is a plague on our nation that has claimed thousands of lives, yet could be easily
prevented through the recognition of warning signs and proper education. The number of cancer,
lung disease, heart disease, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, AIDS, and birth defect related deaths
combined does not amount to the number of deaths caused by suicide in young adults and teenagers.
In the majority of cases, teens considering suicide showed warning signs. Four out of five teenagers
who have attempted suicide showed warning signs of suicidal thoughts, yet little to no effort has
been put in to put these students back on track (The Jason Foundation). Making proper resources
required in school curriculum could guide struggling students towards a better life. If schools put in
the effort to identify students who show signs of suicide and depression, countless lives would not

The Problem Of Teen Suicide
Teen suicide has become a problem that must be addressed. In today's society it is not common for
teens to discuss what is bothering them; instead they hold it inside as it gnaws at them, until they
can take it no longer. Suicide has even become a sort of fad. Many celebrities, idols, and musicians
have been in the news for talking about suicide, and some have even carried it out. Some of the
most recents are Brad Bufanda of the 'Veronica Mars' show, and Chester Bennington of the rock
band, 'Linkin Park'. These people are who some teens look to for guidance, and if a musician has a
song full of pro–suicide lyrics to resolve their problems; then it seems logical that an impressionable
young mind would take that advice to resolve their own problems. It is prevalent in our society
because we have shows such as '13 Reasons Why', which is about a teenage girl who leads a
troubled life. She has dealt with many problems emotionally and physically, at home and school;
and eventually decides to commit suicide. She makes 13 tapes with one person each, giving a
detailed description of why she's committed suicide and the 13 people that made her feel she had to
do it. This show glorified suicide and almost made it seem as though if you can't make a message
while living, turn to suicide and everyone will be forced to listen. These aren't the types of messages
we need imprinted upon teens, especially those who have or will contemplate suicide. There are an
increasing number of reasons a

Teens Suicide, Risk Factors, and Intervention Measures
Nothing is more devastating for a family or community to lose a young person to teen suicide.
Oftentimes, parents, classmates, siblings, and neighbors are left wondering whether they could have
done anything to prevent the spiraling of suicide thoughts and ultimately the death itself.
Preventing tragedies such as these require a proper understanding of suicide ideation and the risk
factors pushing the teen to a point of attempted suicide. That said, the reasons for attempted suicide
in teens can be quite complex. In general, the rate of suicide attempts in children is much lower, but
as they progress to become adolescents, the rate goes up sharply.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide ranks third among the
leading causes of death in the United States for people aged between 15 and 24 years.
The risk of suicide has been shown to dramatically increase in instances where teens have access to
firearms. Statistics reveal that 60% of all the suicides in the United States are gun related. Therefore,
parents and guardians with guns in their homes should ensure they are unloaded and safely locked
out of reach of teens.
Apart from access to firearms, overdose resulting from over–the–counter prescriptions and self–
medication are among the leading methods through which teens attempt and complete suicides. In
terms of gender, there is a stark difference between girls and boys. While the

The Problem Of Teen Suicide
Teen suicide is one of the leading causes of death among teens and a significant problem in the
United States. Consequently, suicide is a tragedy not only for that person, but also for their family
and friends that are left behind (Bell). Many teens of all races are affected by this intentional, self–
inflicted death. Even though the causes of suicide can be hard to isolate, the signs can be linked to
depression, drug abuse, emotional neglect of their parents, bullying, parents divorcing, sexual and
domestic abuse.
Sadness, feelings of lack of worthiness, uninterested in activities are all signs of depression.
Depression is a mood disorder and it is one of the most common signs that lead to suicide.
Teenagers let problems take over their live. If this mental disorder is identified in the early stages,
professional guidance may solve the problem (Bell). Time is the main factor for depression.
Emotional distress is usually what the teenager feels before attempting or completing the act. The
only way their behavior will improve is through professional help. Emotional neglect of parents can
affect teens in a way that is hard to believe. Parents are busy with their lives and sometimes forget
about their children's emotional needs. Therefore, the child feels their existence no longer matters
(Bell). Divorce is another catalyst in teen suicide. Teens that are in a middle of a divorce tend to
blame themselves for their parents break up. Feelings of abandonment takes over and

Suicide continues to be one of the main causes of death in teens throughout America. Statistically,
suicide in the second leading cause of death for those ages ten to twenty–four and around 3,470
people grades ninth to twelfth attempt suicide each day in the United States (Youth Suicide Statistics

formation of a new family, or moving to a new community, are common reasons for suicide. On the
other hand, those who battle depression or develop depression increase the risk of a suicide attempt.
People may think that everything is going wrong and dying is the only solution; but people will
always be willing to help. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem and nothing is
worth taking your own life over.
In Willa Cather's short story "Paul's Case", the main character, Paul, is clearly unhappy with his own
life as well as his home life. Paul lost his mother and has an unstable relationship with his father. He
dreads going home, as Cather explains: "...the hopeless feeling of sinking back forever into ugliness
and commonness that he had always had when he came home" (Cather 108). This quote expresses
the hatred and disgust that Paul has towards his home and he will do anything to avoid coming
home. This book is very relatable and realistic because similar to Paul, many teenagers dislike their
home life and would much rather be away from their own family. Distancing yourself from loved
ones, family, friends, teachers, coaches, or whoever it may be, can be an early sign of depression
(Suicide in Children and Teens 1). Paul may or may not suffer from depression, but either way, his
death could have easily been prevented if Paul had a more positive outlook on life.
While homelife has an enormous impact on someone's emotions, life outside of home may be even
more important. According to Suicide in Children and teens, rebellious behavior such as constant

The Causes Of Teen Suicide
Fifteen minutes fifty–nine seconds then sixteen minutes hits, and another teen commits suicide due
to something going on in their life. It is crazy that in just sixteen minutes another teen commits
suicide. What would possibly be causing teen to take their life this quick? Could it be drug abuse,
depression, stress, peer pressure, or whatever else you could think of? Teen suicide is the second
leading cause of death of teens in the US. Parents wonder why teens commit suicide, and the worst
part is that they will never know why it happened. The guilt fills them to the brim, and it makes the
parents feel like they could have done something if they knew what the problem was. With the rates
of teen suicide rising the questions are growing on why they took their life, however the main
reason that teens commit suicide are because of peer pressure and emotional neglect. – (just a little
more hardcore on the argument)
Teenage suicide is mainly caused through social media, so social media sites to have more intense
and more controlled filters. "4,500 teens commit suicide every month due to cyberbullying"
(Cyberbullying Hotline). This is because there is someone out there that is so low that they want to
bully someone else. With social media playing a huge roll today, there is constantly drama or
bullying going on. Social media says that they filter out cyberbullying on their sites, but anyone can
go to any social media platform and look at many bullying posts. "Most of teen suicides are
committed with firearms with 60 %" (Kids Health). This is because most teens have some sort of
access to a firearm making it the easiest way to commit suicide. All firearms should be locked in a
safe and unloaded so that the risk of a teen suicide will be lessened. "Hamm and her colleagues did
not find consistent links between being bullied and self–harm across the studies" (Stephanie
Pappas). However, cyberbullying helps to lead onto suicide because teens cannot even be in the
comfort of the own homes without being bullied. A stricter filter should be added to social media
sites so that the number of teen suicides will drop due to cyberbullying. Teens have always suffered
from cyberbullying and suicide, but with the new filters the

Teen Suicide (Is your friend at risk?) Teens suicide is a serious concern for many different people.
According to Youth Suicide Statistics, teens die from suicide MORE than from AIDS, cancer,
influenza, heart disease, and pneumonia COMBINED. Teen suicide is the main reason why teens
are losing their lives everyday. According to American Academy Of Child And Adolescent
Psychiatry, It tells you what to look for in a suicidal teen. In the website it states that a suicidal teen
(or person in general) can really change. For example, someone who is suicidal will say things like
"I wish I would die." and/or "I wish I was dead." Something else that you can look for is their past.
Has that person had any suicidal issues in the past? Has their family members been suicidal? If a
family member or loved one is struggling with suicide, please contact a doctor. To know if a loved
one is struggling with suicidal thoughts, is to keep looking out for them. You have to watch out for
them. Are they usually sad? You can't assume that they are depressed because of ONE day that you
see them sad. It could be that they are having a bad day, and that they will be okay the next day. You
have to keep watching out for them. You could also see their clothes. Are they wearing long sleeves
in the summertime multiple times? If so it might that they are trying to cover something up. There
are many things that can be happening in you're loved one's life that you don't even know about.
Suicide has had a big impact on teens. These people could've had a big part in many lives, but this

Why Are Teens Suicidal?
Teens can be suicidal for many reasons. One way that someone can be suicidal is that they are
getting bullied. They can also depressed and so certain thoughts can creep in. Another way is that
they have been struggling with something in general. Maybe they are insecure and don't like the
way they look. Maybe it's something that's in their family. Their family member could've been
suicidal too and so they got it from them. Another thing is the environment that the person is in. If

Suicide is one of the highest cause of death around the world. Everyday there are about 121
suicides. Suicides are more dominant in Asia and Eastern Europe having about 28.6 suicide deaths
per 100,000 people. While South Korea is second having 26.3 suicide deaths per 1000,000 people.
Over 1 million people a year commit suicide, so in every 40 seconds 1 person commits suicide.
That's about 3,000 deaths a day. https://afsp.org/about–suicide/suicide–statistics/
Methods of Teen Suicide There are many different methods for a teen to kill themselves. About 65%

Adolescent Suicide The rate of suicide, the act or an instance of taking one's own life voluntarily
and intentionally, increases each year. "More adolescents die each year from suicide than from
cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease,
combined" (Preventing Teen Suicide, 2016, p.2). These facts show suicide is a serious problem
among teens. Last year, teen suicide became the second leading cause of death in the United States
confirming the significant increase in teen suicides.
Causes and Reasons Causes of suicide vary but as technology advances new causes are apparent.
Social media plays a major role in causes of suicide. Technology allows cyber bullying to happen
frequently and recur until something or someone stops it. Victims of bullying often think they have
no way out of their situation or feel like there is no help. People with suicidal thoughts struggle
either mentally, physically, or emotionally. "Three million children are absent from school each
month due to bullying. Twenty percent of those bullied kids have suicidal thoughts" (Bullying and
Suicide, 2016, p.1). Media's such as snapchat, instagram, twitter, or facebook all provide factual
information about previous cases of suicide. Cyberbullying is a serious problem especially among
adolescent girls. Girls are more likely than boys to attempt suicide due to cyberbullying, because
girls are struggling to find themselves as a person (Bichell, 2013, p. 3). Any form of negativity or
put down affects them, and who they are trying to become. Teens who experienced traumatic events
in their childhood are more likely to commit suicide. According to The Mayo Clinic ( 2017), studies
show that teens who are victims of divorce, rape, or abuse are at a higher risk of attempting suicide.
However, teens with mental health issues are most likely to commit suicide. Depression is the
leading cause in health issues among teens. Deriving from home life, alcohol and drug use,
friendships, school, and other attributes.

The Risk of Teen Suicide Teen suicide is a drastic public health concern and immediate action is
needed to prevent suicide from occurring more frequenting in youth. Research shows that suicide is
the third leading cause of death among high school students (Bauman, Toomey, Walker, 2013).
Additionally, Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, stated that 13. 8% of the students were
seriously considering suicide and 6.3% have attempted suicide in the last 12 months before the
survey was given (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2009). There is a gap understanding
the risk of teen suicide, since many of the research available relates to adults. The risk of teen
suicides is increasing dramatically by 300% since 1950s (Miller & Eckert, 2009). School
professionals should be able to identify suicidal students, understand the role that the school plays in
preventing suicide, and the cultural variables found in youth suicide.
Identifying Suicidal Students Suicide is preventable, and many times, the youth who is
contemplating suicide gives many warning signs before the incident occurs. Additionally, there are
risk factors that make a teenager more likely to attempt or commit suicide. Parents, school staff, and
friends should be aware of these warning signs and risk factors in order to prevent the irreversible
from occurring. Warning signs are signs that may be seen in a person when he or she has suicidal

Teen Suicide According to Maureen and Kayla (78), "adolescent depression is a serious problem
affecting 10.7% of all teens and 29.9% of high school students" whereby, 17% of the latter are
supposed to have contemplated suicide in general. Notably, this statistic conveys the seriousness
with which the issue needs to be addressed with because, ostensibly, most of the depression cases,
which ultimately lead to suicide incidences among teens, are still going unrecognized. Moreover, as
American Psychological Association asserts, the primary cause of suicidal distress include social,
environmental, and psychological factors (par. 2). Additionally, the former also notes that suicide
risk factors vary with certain aspects including age, ethnic group, stressful life events, family
dynamics, and gender among other factors. In precision, it is admissible that despite the many
aspects that are supposed to be the main cause of suicide cases among teens, failure to recognize and
treat, or rather, address the causative agents of suicidal conditions could be the primary reason for
the rampancy regarding the issue. Therefore, if, for instance, medical practitioners and parents

Teen Suicide And Suicide
In America today, majority of schools have a plethora of diversity. Students in schools all have
different cultures, talents, and views that make them unique from one another. Schools feel full of
culture due to diversity. A student 's voice helps a school become a wonderful and lively place to
learn. However, what happens when a student silences their voice for ever by killing themselves?
When a student dies in an accident, schools can mourn the death as a random occurrence. However,

Depression does not only come from people with disabilities. Anyone can feel depressed.
Depression may come from a lack of feeling appreciated by one's peers or one 's family. In the film
the Breakfast club, there exists an epitome of a depressed character. In the film the character Brian
considers shooting himself. Brian's desire was caused by his failing grade on a major
assignment.Throughout the film, Brian act as a nice and intelligent young man. He does not stand
out as mentally disabled person or a troublesome youth. Yet Brian still has depression. His
depression stems from bullies constantly harassing him for his imperfections, which damages his
self–esteem and confidence in himself. It also stems from his parents putting very high expectations
on him. The parents do not appear that frequently in the film, though later in the film Brian
describes them as people who give him pressure. They make him feel that he must succeed
academically to be accepted into a prestigious college. In order to feel fulfilled in life, Brian feels he
must live up to the standard that his parents set for him. In his explanation for having the gun, Brian
says, '' I can 't have an F, I can 't have it and I know my parents can 't have it! Even if I aced the rest

  • 2. Teen Suicide Each year, one out of thirteen teens age nineteen and under attempts suicide (Preface). Personally, that is more than enough teens choosing to take their lives each year. It isn't really easy to figure out why some teens choose to take their lives. Suicide is a multi–faceted issue, sometimes an act of courage, sometimes an act of selfishness, sometimes a brave choice in the face of pain, and sometimes an act of fondness. It is important to understand why some choose to take their lives and some ways that in school and out of school we as individuals are able to help those in need. According to the author of the book Suicide Among Gifted Children and Adolescents Tracy Cross; suicide is both visible and able to be averted. Sometimes when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like the 16 years old teenager I was at that moment the first thing I do is grab my phone. As I go on Instagram I see a post about a familiar person that I usually see around school and have had interactions with once or twice. I sit up on the bed to read the description that states "Rip to one of our falcons". After reading the post I still felt as though it wasn't true. I continued to go down my feed and I saw the second post about it and a third one. I contacted one of my friends to see if it was true and she told me that the boy committed suicide. I've never felt so bad and such anger towards someone dying. This boy had a whole life ahead of him; he was a freshman in varsity football, he was taking honors classes, and everyone knew him as a great person. I was so in shock that tears started to fall down my cheeks. I wonder the whole day why would he choose to take his own life? What could we have done to prevent him from committing suicide? A few days later one of his close friend that was like a brother to him also took his own life. I was out of words, everyone in the county was showing their love and saying things like "I'll be sure to keep their families in my prayers" nothing made me angrier. No one really thought that those two guys would be the type to take their lives away. It's always the people that we don't think would choose to take their life ends up doing it. • 3. Suicide And Suicide : Solution To Preventing Teen Suicide Preventing Teen Suicide According to the World Health Organization, "Suicide has surpassed homicide to become the second leading cause of death among ten to twenty–nine–year–olds; in 2012, suicide claimed the lives of more than five–thousand people within this age bracket" (Onieal 14). Five–thousand young people felt that the weight of the problems they were faced with was too much to handle, and suicide was the only solution. As a teen who struggled with clinical depression and anxiety, this is an issue that is very real to me. So many of these suicides could have been prevented if we were more aware of how many teens are struggling with depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses, and offered our support and strength to those who feel too weak to hold on any longer. There are a lot of pressures on teens in today's society, such as achieving good grades, managing a heavy school load, parents getting divorced, break–ups with boyfriends and girlfriends, trying to conform to the standards of beauty we see on social media, bullies at school, and functioning with not nearly enough of sleep. When combined, these pressures can be so stressful that they can cause serious anxiety and mental illness. Janis Whitlock, director of the Cornell Research Program on Self–Injury and Recovery says, "If you wanted to create an environment to churn out really angsty people, we've done it. It's that they're in a cauldron of stimulus they can't get away from, or don't want to get away from, or don't know how to get away from." One of the most effective ways to prevent suicide is to provide awareness and educate students, parents, school officials, community members and peers on how to identify suicidal signs (Shireen, Janapana, Rehmatullah, Temuri, Azim 210). When someone commits suicide, we often hear things like, "I never saw it coming," or "they seemed fine." When someone is struggling and nobody notices, it makes them feel unloved and like no one cares about them, which can cause suicidal thoughts. If we were more aware of signs of depression, anxiety, or suicidal behaviors, we could make somebody struggling feel loved, supported, and hopeful, and encourage them to seek out professional help. Not only does suicide take ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Teen Suicide Thesis Kate Wells Kendra Gallos English 3 Honors 21 November 2017 Teen Suicide Prevention: Putting Meaning Back Into the Lives of Young "Statistics reveal that in the US approximately...nearly one million people attempt suicide each year" ("Suicide Risk Among Abused Children."). Suicide is not an act of randomness. It is a result of prolonged feelings and/ or events, which push that person to extremes they desperately want out of. Suicide rates are amongst the highest in teens, due to their lack of support systems. During these years many are trying to find–out who they are and fit in, thus many get accepted into some people's views, but there are also a good number that get ignored and feel like they do not belong anywhere. Teen suicide can be a result of a home–life of abuse or mistreatment, psychological disorders, and lack of social support–bullying; however, through the education on the warning signs of suicide, providing more emotional outlets at schools, and creating safer environments the number of annual victims can be decreased. Living in a house full of mistreatment and abuse can eat away at a teenager more than many would like to admit. Abuse (physical, sexual, psychological) has no benefits, instead it causes individuals to see themselves as not enough and that they are not wanted anywhere. Teenagers are already vulnerable to the pressures of high school, and trying to find themselves. In school there are many stressors– such as grades, friends, teachers, ... The Causes Of Teen Suicide Teen Suicide According to a statistician at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics, "Suicide is the third leading cause of death in the U.S." (Miniño) Suicide is not a pretty or fun topic. Teen suicide is not to be taken lightly. This is a real thing that many teens are struggling with. Even if a teen is healthy and normal, most will deal with suicidal thoughts at some points in their young lives. Suicide is a sad, scary, and sickening thing. Thousands of teens in the U.S. are committing suicide year round and people need to better understand its seriousness. Bullying is one of the many triggers that can lead teens to suicide. People are bullies for many different reasons. It could be to make themselves feel better about their appearance or home life. It could be that they are just truly mean inside. For whatever reason that people bully, it is always wrong. Bullying seems like no big deal until you see that the effects can be disastrous. "Cyberbullying pushed an 18–year–old over the edge, leading her to shoot herself in the chest Tuesday afternoon at the family's Texas City home as family members watched" ( It can lead to depression, self–loathing, or even suicide. It is important to understand that most suicides are not just random acts; there is usually a trigger behind them. "Students who are bullied are more than twice as likely to attempt suicide than those who aren't bullied" (Preventing Teen suicide). School is another thing that can trigger suicide in teens. School can be extremely stressful for a young teen. Most of the time it is because they can not manage their time to make everything balance out. They wake up early and go to school all morning and afternoon then they have extracurricular activities, like sports, in the evening. By the time they get home its already late and they still have to do their homework and get ready for the next day. School is such a big stress point for teen that "September is Suicide Prevention Month; September 7–13 is National Suicide Prevention Week; and September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day" (Preventing Teen Suicide). School counselors should have special training to know when to recognize students who could possibly be suicidal, but over one third of them cannot identify them. Parents should simply ask their child if they have ever thought of killing their self; it is better to know before and get them help than having to plan their funeral. If they are depressed, there are people who can help them overcome that obstacle in life. Jessica attempted to kill herself when she was thirteen years old. Suicide among adolescent girls may occur as a result of mental disorders, drug misuse, cultural, family and social situations, genetics, and most of all, cyberbullying (Ehmke). Based on a 2015 study, about 20% of adolescent girls in the U.S. consider suicide and between 5% and 8% of them attempt suicide each year (Ehmke). In 2014 alone, 150 girls out of 10 million, between the ages of ten and fourteen, committed suicide due to cyberbullying among other related factors (Graham). Medical experts warn that excessive social media and smartphone use may lead to cyberbullying. Most victims of cyberbullying often experience a great deal of stress and anxiety leading to suicidal ideation (Ehmke). An analysis by Jean Twenge, in The Atlantic, confirms that cyberbullying is more strongly related to suicidal thoughts in adolescents than traditional bullying (Twenge). Some estimates suggest that – depending on the country of origin – between 5% and 20% of adolescent girls are victims of physical, verbal or exclusion–based bullying, while 15% to 30% of them are victims of cyberbullying (Twenge). The relationship between cyberbullying and suicide has only been explored in a few studies, but Jean Twenge's analysis strongly suggests that cyberbullying is a major risk factor for suicide ideation in adolescent girls (Twenge). • 29. The Problem Of Teen Suicide Teen suicide has become a problem that must be addressed. In today's society it is not common for teens to discuss what is bothering them; instead they hold it inside as it gnaws at them, until they can take it no longer. Suicide has even become a sort of fad. Many celebrities, idols, and musicians have been in the news for talking about suicide, and some have even carried it out. Some of the most recents are Brad Bufanda of the 'Veronica Mars' show, and Chester Bennington of the rock band, 'Linkin Park'. These people are who some teens look to for guidance, and if a musician has a song full of pro–suicide lyrics to resolve their problems; then it seems logical that an impressionable young mind would take that advice to resolve their own problems. It is prevalent in our society because we have shows such as '13 Reasons Why', which is about a teenage girl who leads a troubled life. She has dealt with many problems emotionally and physically, at home and school; and eventually decides to commit suicide. She makes 13 tapes with one person each, giving a detailed description of why she's committed suicide and the 13 people that made her feel she had to do it. This show glorified suicide and almost made it seem as though if you can't make a message while living, turn to suicide and everyone will be forced to listen. These aren't the types of messages we need imprinted upon teens, especially those who have or will contemplate suicide. There are an increasing number of reasons a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Oftentimes, parents, classmates, siblings, and neighbors are left wondering whether they could have done anything to prevent the spiraling of suicide thoughts and ultimately the death itself. Preventing tragedies such as these require a proper understanding of suicide ideation and the risk factors pushing the teen to a point of attempted suicide. That said, the reasons for attempted suicide in teens can be quite complex. In general, the rate of suicide attempts in children is much lower, but as they progress to become adolescents, the rate goes up sharply. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide ranks third among the leading causes of death in the United States for people aged between 15 and 24 years. The risk of suicide has been shown to dramatically increase in instances where teens have access to firearms. Statistics reveal that 60% of all the suicides in the United States are gun related. Therefore, parents and guardians with guns in their homes should ensure they are unloaded and safely locked out of reach of teens. Consequently, suicide is a tragedy not only for that person, but also for their family and friends that are left behind (Bell). Many teens of all races are affected by this intentional, self– inflicted death. Even though the causes of suicide can be hard to isolate, the signs can be linked to depression, drug abuse, emotional neglect of their parents, bullying, parents divorcing, sexual and domestic abuse. Sadness, feelings of lack of worthiness, uninterested in activities are all signs of depression. Depression is a mood disorder and it is one of the most common signs that lead to suicide. Teenagers let problems take over their live. If this mental disorder is identified in the early stages, professional guidance may solve the problem (Bell). Time is the main factor for depression. Emotional distress is usually what the teenager feels before attempting or completing the act. The only way their behavior will improve is through professional help. Emotional neglect of parents can affect teens in a way that is hard to believe. Parents are busy with their lives and sometimes forget about their children's emotional needs. Therefore, the child feels their existence no longer matters (Bell). Divorce is another catalyst in teen suicide. In Willa Cather's short story "Paul's Case", the main character, Paul, is clearly unhappy with his own life as well as his home life. Paul lost his mother and has an unstable relationship with his father. He dreads going home, as Cather explains: "...the hopeless feeling of sinking back forever into ugliness and commonness that he had always had when he came home" (Cather 108). This quote expresses the hatred and disgust that Paul has towards his home and he will do anything to avoid coming home. This book is very relatable and realistic because similar to Paul, many teenagers dislike their home life and would much rather be away from their own family. Distancing yourself from loved ones, family, friends, teachers, coaches, or whoever it may be, can be an early sign of depression (Suicide in Children and Teens 1). Paul may or may not suffer from depression, but either way, his death could have easily been prevented if Paul had a more positive outlook on life. While homelife has an enormous impact on someone's emotions, life outside of home may be even more important. According to Suicide in Children and teens, rebellious behavior such as constant lying may be a sign of suicidal person. "When questioned by the Principal as to why he was there, Paul stated, politely enough, that he wanted to come back to school. This was a lie, but Paul was quite accustomed to lying; found it, indeed, indispensable for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With social media playing a huge roll today, there is constantly drama or bullying going on. Social media says that they filter out cyberbullying on their sites, but anyone can go to any social media platform and look at many bullying posts. "Most of teen suicides are committed with firearms with 60 %" (Kids Health). This is because most teens have some sort of access to a firearm making it the easiest way to commit suicide. All firearms should be locked in a safe and unloaded so that the risk of a teen suicide will be lessened. "Hamm and her colleagues did not find consistent links between being bullied and self–harm across the studies" (Stephanie Pappas). However, cyberbullying helps to lead onto suicide because teens cannot even be in the comfort of the own homes without being bullied. • 38. Teens And Teen Suicide Teen Suicide According to Maureen and Kayla (78), "adolescent depression is a serious problem affecting 10.7% of all teens and 29.9% of high school students" whereby, 17% of the latter are supposed to have contemplated suicide in general. Notably, this statistic conveys the seriousness with which the issue needs to be addressed with because, ostensibly, most of the depression cases, which ultimately lead to suicide incidences among teens, are still going unrecognized. Moreover, as American Psychological Association asserts, the primary cause of suicidal distress include social, environmental, and psychological factors (par. 2). Additionally, the former also notes that suicide risk factors vary with certain aspects including age, ethnic group, stressful life events, family dynamics, and gender among other factors. In precision, it is admissible that despite the many aspects that are supposed to be the main cause of suicide cases among teens, failure to recognize and treat, or rather, address the causative agents of suicidal conditions could be the primary reason for the rampancy regarding the issue. Therefore, if, for instance, medical practitioners and parents among other involved individuals seek to curb teen suicide, it first necessitates their understanding of the problem including reasons that might lead a teenager to develop suicidal thoughts.
