Editor's Notes
As members of the ESL teaching committee the administration has tasked us with developing ways to integrate technology into our ESL instruction. Integration of technology is necessary not only for the learning benefits of the students but for the students exposure to world applications that will be in high demand in the American society. The ability to use Technology has become a required skill in most all careers, communications, and social expectations so using such technologies will not only enhance learning but also help students with crucial life skill building. Also as teachers of ESL students we are required to be complaint with standards and most of our instructional reference text including English as a Second Language (ESL) Teaching and Learning (2006) Gonzalez et. al. shows that National standards such as The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), “requires that teachers be prepared to integrate technology into their instruction (p. 304). As second grade teachers most of our ESL students have developed limited English skills so we will be focusing on technology for beginning language acquisition skills.
As beginning English Learners visual aids will be most important in helping students connect to new words. The Internet provides us near endless resources in the form of webpages for helping students learn new vocabulary. On her ESOL Help (2012) Webpage Donia Popovice provides a categorically organized picture dictionary that gives visual aides for Tier one words. This specific page provides and “Action” category that provides effective visual imagery for everyday actions such as fall, drive, drink, dress, cut, crawl, smell yawn, weigh. To use this in the classroom lets consider given the standard (ELAGSE2RL1) you are reading a simple story with various actions in Little Johnny's daily routine. The story tells how Johnny Wakes up, takes a Shower, Brushes his teeth, Eats Breakfast, Dresses, runs to the bus, and Goes to school. When reading the story you emphasize the actions in the books pictures as you read the words, you may have the student demonstrate or act out the actions as they say it. After reading the story you can go back to several action words with the books picture and have the students view several pictures on the online picture dictionary and find preselected actions. This creates a fun game that reinforces the students concept of the action word and integrates technology into the lesson. Of course simply googling or searching the action words can provide visual images of the words or concept, but using a pre determined picture dictionary provides kid friendly pictures and this particular site also provides test, quizzes, and flashcards for common Tier one words.
While web resources such as pictures, videos, and games provide teachers fun ways to help students interact with, learn, and visualize new words. Software programs can help provide scaffolded instruction in learning languages. Audio translators often also have games and activities available to help engage students in learning new language concepts. Audio translators also can assist the teacher by providing supplemented instruction. For example if the teacher has a student who speaks Spanish as a first language; when teaching vocabulary the teacher can use a audio translator to help the student understand the meaning of the word. If a vocabulary words is “Blue” and the teacher does not know that “Azul” is the translation for the word blue or how to properly pronounce the word “azul” the teacher cans use the translator to find the right pronunciation of the word. If working with a group of Spanish students or ESL students the teacher can use the translator in large group to provide audio feed back and instruction for the class. You can use an online translation dictionary for this as well but having the translator available provides faster translation of more than just one word at a time. You can translate phrases and sentences.
When students use Word programs they are provided immediate feedback on spelling and sentence form errors and if trained to use the programs they can be exposed to extended vocabulary. For Second grade students can type simple words and sentences. The red underlines of misspelled words can help students recognize errors for self correction which enhances their word recognition skills. If the vocabulary for the week consist of words relating to animals (dog, cat, bear, bat, rat…ect). The students can be asked to type a sentence with the words and correct any misspellings that are marked by the program. Using a program with audio function also helps students further their understanding of the words they are using. New data tracking abilities also give teachers the opportunity to design charts to give students a visual representation of their progress. To use this in the classroom make a chart with the letter sounds or words you wish the students to master/comprehend, create a reward system for each milestone on the chart (Mastered 20, 50, 75, 100 words) and mark the students progress through observations as the class progresses. Adding pictures to the chart can also help the students visualize what words they have learned. Charts that are electronically generated are easily kept and nagivated.
While second graders especially ESL students may have limited abilities to navigate the web for information forming groups to navigate per-selected sites can be fun and educational for students. Discovery Kids is a great resource for science and history content and provides interesting visual aid and cultural information. Leap pads, V-Teach, and read aloud programs provide tools for students to follow stories while getting the correct pronunciation of words. Finding one of these with a pace control could be helpful to students. Kindle provides teachers with resources for books for kids that can be navigated with technology and easily accessible. Kindle provides endless topics and selections of content which is a valuable resource to the classroom and students. With an account the teacher can assign groups to find books they are interested in in certain content areas and topics. For example if the teacher is doing a lesson on synonyms and antonyms the students can find books on kindle in those categories and choose one of their interrest to discuss.
