- #3 One of the most important ways that you will be communicating with your professor is through email. Professors in the Ed Tech program encourage the use of Gmail by Google. Gmail is easy to use and they offer practically unlimited space. You might already have an email set up but it is best to open an additional one through Gmail to ensure that you receive any email from your professor and/or fellow classmates that may be important.
- #4 As a distance learner you will rely heavily on Blackboard. To access Blackboard you will need a username and password. Your user name is the first initial of your first and last name along with your student ID and the password is the four number pin that you used for telephone registration. Blackboard is like the classroom for your courses. There you will find information such as: calendars, syllabi, meeting times, and projects. By logging into Blackboard you will also be able to access Elluminate.
- #5 As part of your course you will be required to meet synchronously at least once a week. But don’t be alarmed, you will be advised the time and day that you will be meeting with your classmates and your professor. Classes are usually recorded for reference and for those that miss class. If for any reason you are not able to attend one of the scheduled meeting times. You are encouraged to watch/listen to the recorded class. Since you will be given a grade for class participation you will need to write up a synopsis of the class you miss and email it to your professor for credit.
- #6 The Ed Tech program recommends that you download PhotoFiltre to optimize your photos, it is important to remember that the amount of space that you are working with on the Internet is very limited. Keeping that in mind, you are encouraged to resize and crop your photos before you upload them on to the web. Best of downloading this program is FREE!
- #7 The wiki that you will be using is Pbworks, formally known as pbwiki. Pbworks is a collaborative software that allows multiple users to edit a file synchronously, or at the same time. Users can create basic workspaces that are public or private. If you choose to have a private workspace you have the option to invite others to join you in viewing or editing the space that you have created. Through your Ed Tech program you will be working in collaboration with others in your course to complete a group project, thus making pbworks a create program to use.
- #8 Camtasia is a software that allows you create videos by capturing the images that are on your computer screen. While creating your video you are also allowed to use background music and narration. After you are done recording you can go back and edit the video to fulfill the necessary specifications. Once your are done you can finalize the video by saving it in the desired format. Best of all you can download Camstasia for a free trial period.
- #9 SoftChalk is a program that allows you create web page lessons that integrate interactive activities. SoftChalk also allows you to add media such as graphics, audio, and/or videos to support your lesson. You are also able to make sure that students have understood the content by adding assessments throughout the lesson. SoftChalk lets you choose the type of questions you want to use such as: multiple choice, true/false and matching, to name a few. Once your lesson is complete you can also share your lesson through various content management systems.
- #10 Photo Story is a free application that is offered through Microsoft. With Photo Story you can create show and tell presentations with the use of digital photos that you have taken with your digital camera. As you create your digital story you have the capability of adding text, narration and even background music to your photos. Once you are done with your digital story you are able to save it in .wmv format so that it can be played with Window Media Player
- #11 Moodle is an open source courseware management system that allows users to create online courses, very similar to Blackboard. You are able to create a module with indiviual lessons. Like Blackboard, moodle offers features such as calendars, file downloads, discussion boards, and grading to name a few.
- #12 Blogger is a blog-publishing service powered by google. Blog is blend of web log. It allows individuals to create their own web log. Owners of a blog input posts such as: news, graphics, videos, and events and other people that follow that particular blog post comments and/or messages in response to the to what the owner of the blog posted.
