3. OBJECTIVE= Introduction of improved milk collection techniques to FMPs as a tool to accomplishingthe
supply of safe and good milk to Shonga Dairy Ltd. Activity organized to reduce substandard milk’srejection upon
testing and eliminatewastages. Activity organized by BSS (whitewood veterinary ventures Ltd).
4. PARTICIPANTS- Shonga dairy cluster members were the participants,drawn from Ifelodun and Edu LGAs in
Kwara State.

5. PARTNERS – IFDC/2SCALE #200,000.
- SHONGA DAIRY CLUSTER (Contribution in kind) #240,000
6. DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY- Event beganat 11.30am. A brief reviewof the earlier activitiesaccomplishedbythe
cluster was done byDr SHITTUJ S as a prelude to the day’s programme. Activity was made up of lecture and a practical
sessions by the team of resource personnel. Dr KOLO’s Lecture dwell on safehandlingof milk and milk products
with proper hygienic measures, pointingout possiblesources of milk contamination,contractable(zoonotic)
diseases through milk i.e Tuberculosis,Brucellosisand Typhoid Fever/Salmonellosis,emphasizingtheuse of
disinfectants in milk collection processes.Graphic presentations depicting disinfection,milk collection and timing

in the delivery of milk to collection centres was anchored by Drs Lawal & Shittu. Next was the outdoor practical
demonstration on cow restraining,cleaningof the milkers hands,cleaningof the milk collection utensils,cow
udder usingparozone, iodinetincture and glycerine,jointly accomplished all resourcepersonnel.

8. ACTIVITYRESULTS= The milkingof healthy cows (a week post- partum) by healthy and hygienic milkers in
conduciveenvironment, usingclean and disinfected milk containers,udder washingand disinfection with iodine
tincture, glycerineapplication for smooth “milk let down” and prompt delivery to collection centres to avoid milk
souringand rejection. Yes, good and safemilk is essential for public health and improved economy (fmps).
9 EVALUATION = Participantsgladly appreciatebetter the collection techniques introduced as an
improvement over previously employed collection methods for better result.
10. BUDGET - Total budget- # 200,000.
Total expenditure - # 220,600. Spent on preparation of trainingmodules,implementation and facilitation of
training.There was over spending, extra hands (experts) were needed in cattle handling/restraintas well more
snacks for participants.
11 RELEVANCE = The adoption of the milkingtechniques taught is quintessential to achievingthe overall
objective of the cluster’s activities i.eimproved quantity of good and safe milk delivery to Shonga Dairy Ltd. Poor

12. OUTCOMES/NEXT LINE OF ACTION - Emphasis will bepaid to the time lapsebetween milk collection by the
FMPs and delivery to MCCs. Logistics in terms of terrain, distanceand easeof transportation arebeingnoted as
basis for the location of proposed MCCs.
13. REPORT AGAINSTToR- The collection and prompt delivery of good and safemilk to the MCCs by FMPs is
achievableusingthis innovation.
