EXPRESSIVE BODY
Reflection - Level 4 to 5
I feel that from level 4 to this year in level 5 I have become a lot more accepting to try the new
and different styles and techniques. I have gotten out of the frame of mind of thinking that "this
is how I like to dance and I’m not going to change that". It has been eye opening and feel will help
me a lot in the future with mixing different styles not only to add to my own individual style of
movement, but also in allowing me to adapt for different situations and classes. As for my
concentration levels and motivations, I think it varied for different classes and different weeks.
This was the same in level 4 and is something I feel i really need to focus on next year, to keep
myself motivated to work as hard as possible and get the best results for level 6. At the start of
the semester i did a reflection from last year to what I needed to work on, this can be seen below.
I feel that some of the points I did work on and improve with, however there was still a lot of
room for improvement.

Technical and Expressive Body
Studio Practice Semester 1 - Bernard and Lisa
Assessment mark 63 Continuous assessment mark 65
Lisa - Though I really enjoyed these classes and the way of movement, I feel that this year in Lisa’s class I was less
comfortable with performing the exercises. The class was focused a lot on breathing and yoga and this is something I really
struggle with. As time went on I could feel the slight improvements however not as much as I would have liked. I love the
fluidity of the class and the linking of the exercises, but I tend to forget a lot about the more technical side of it due to
feeling so relaxed. I also found it hard to remember a lot of the exercises due to mixing of classes and trying to remember all
of Bernards work as well.
Bernard - I feel that Bernard’s class really pushed me and made me work a lot harder than I was used to. My movement
memory really helped with this class and allowed me to focus on timing and performance, however I feel after a while I got
complacent and stop trying to push even further past this.

Feedback: Lauren this is a solid mark for you this semester although i can't help feeling that you are capable of more. You have really
good dynamic range and use of energy that had not really been extended this year as much as it could have been. Your alignment is
improve although you could work harder to find that lengthening in the spine and connectivity to the spine and pelvis, - and this will
really support your pelvic awareness and give you strength which is essential to release work. There is still more work to do on
realising the shoulders, sternum and ribcage and being constant with your alignment throughout the exercises, You could still work
to become more receptive to somatic and release work such as use of weight and breath and realising tension, lengthening in the
muscles rather than contracting and shortening the muscles. Overall you display good fluidity of movement and suppleness in the
Somatic work: you have real potential for this work but you really need to push yourself next semester to really move yourself
forward into a high 2.1 level that i know you are capable of. Perhaps being in a mixed group next semester will really work for you.

Studio Practice Semester 2 – Darren
Attendance: 28 March class mark 66% Continuous Assessment mark 66 %
It took me a while, but by the end of of the semester I was really enjoying and feeling the benefits of this class. The fall and release
technique was one I enjoyed learning about and could see and feel the different it made over the weeks during exercises, and I
would definitely like to carry on with it. There were movements where my hip injury would prevent me from performing all the
movements which was very frustrating but I tried to persevere. At the end the most noticeable different for me was feeling how
much stronger I had gotten, and how much further I could push myself out of my usual personal boundaries. I still feel as thought I
have a lot more to work on and perfect in this technique however this will need to be addressed over time. I am pleased with my
grade in this class as I did try very hard to 'untrain' my body from its usual ways and try new thins, but I know that there was still a
way to go. An early video that shows how restricting I was in the movement, resisting letting myself go and working outside of my
boundaries.

This is a video from the start of the semester and just from my own knowledge I can tell how much I improved in this exercises,
allowing myself to relaxing and stop trying to keep in my comfort zone.

Feedback: Lauren this was a very good class. You have become so much less stylised in the way you move and have a greater sense
of fluidity and projection into the kinesphere. You are becoming much more aware of the three dimensional approach to the space
with expression which shows moments of sensitivity and truth. You have worked hard this semester and there have been some
changes. However you still need to work hard over the summer on flexibility of the lower back, flexibility and core strength. You are
really trying to encapsulate the fall and with strength you will be able to control the elevation and control in extension you desire.
You still need to work on the rotation of the legs. Keep working hard I expect if you continue in this way and with your approach third
year will reap dramatic rewards for you.
You have really tried hard this semester only held back but the amount you needed to do. You concentrate and work hard in classes
but do feel that this needed to be further explored more consistently in private study. Keep working hard I expect if you continue in
this way and with your approach third year will reap dramatic rewards for you.

For Studio Practice I also had to create a portfolio looking at my own fitness and researching
into different factors that can be improved to help me with my dancing. It included posture
photos, fitness tests compared from both 1st and 2nd year, and exercises to improve flexibility
and strength. Unfortunately I did not do as well in this portfolio as I would of liked, I feel this
was due to lack of commitment to the work, and not understanding the criteria properly
resulting in a lot of useless information being added in and not enough relating back to myself
and evaluation.

There were movements where my hip injury would prevent me from performing all the movements which was very frustrating but I tried to persevere. At the end the most noticeable different for me was feeling how much stronger I had gotten, and how much further I could push myself out of my usual personal boundaries. I still feel as thought I have a lot more to work on and perfect in this technique however this will need to be addressed over time. I am pleased with my grade in this class as I did try very hard to 'untrain' my body from its usual ways and try new thins, but I know that there was still a way to go. You have become so much less stylised in the way you move and have a greater sense of fluidity and projection into the kinesphere. You are becoming much more aware of the three dimensional approach to the space with expression which shows moments of sensitivity and truth. You have worked hard this semester and there have been some changes. However you still need to work hard over the summer on flexibility of the lower back, flexibility and core strength. You are really trying to encapsulate the fall and with strength you will be able to control the elevation and control in extension you desire. You still need to work on the rotation of the legs. Keep working hard I expect if you continue in this way and with your approach third year will reap dramatic rewards for you. Studio Practice Theory Overall Mark for Evaluation: 2.1 61% Portfolio.docx For Studio Practice I also had to create a portfolio looking at my own fitness and researching into different factors that can be improved to help me with my dancing. It included posture photos, fitness tests compared from both 1st and 2nd year, and exercises to improve flexibility and strength. Unfortunately I did not do as well in this portfolio as I would of liked, I feel this was due to lack of commitment to the work, and not understanding the criteria properly resulting in a lot of useless information being added in and not enough relating back to myself and evaluation.
