I need to improve on reaching the top tier of
characterisation as acting is my most confident skill
regarding the three art forms but I want to completely
indulge myself in each character thrown at me
understanding who I’m playing and why each decision
I make is necessary to communicate that. This means
retaining all character movements added in rehearsal
and understanding why I’m moving in a certain
degree.

braking down each performance I do, this means

performances I take part in.

has it made to you as an actor?
Yes I feel I have fully achieved this target, I achieved it through gaining constant direction but also going
out and doing research in my own time, a great method I’ve found is researching the background and
area the character is within and apply yourself to it, this was my reactions are raw and real. I achieved it
when I was tasked with playing an urban street character for my ‘Bring it On’ dance group repertoire,
that night I went home researching into the culture what would be around this character and influence
myself into thinking how he would react to particular situations, then I took part in an improvisational
task with my peers and felt completely in role thanks to the research knowledge I could apply on the
spot. It has made a significant difference letting me strive towards something greater, as now it isn’t
just lines I’m delivering with the placement of specific reactions, instead when I’m in a
workshop/rehearsal I am committing myself to fully being that character meaning I’m not thinking
about reactions or how to particularly move, I’m just doing it.
SMART TARGETS - Long Term target 2 ON DANCE SKILLS

I need to improve on my overall dancing ability and
my focus towards learning and taking part in new
dances. Due to my lack in confidence in my ability to
dance I have tended to drift and lose complete focus
when taking part in dances in the past (school shows)
therefore my coordination and muscle memory has
been poor. In order to fix this I must overcome this
hurdle and concentrate when learning new dances.

I will measure this by recording myself dancing
throughout the rehearsal process giving my all in each
workshop and I should start to notice gradual
improvement.

make gradual improvements which shouldn’t be out

to improve my dance ability.

I want to increase on my skills within dance by the
February showcase. Because I recognise this may take
some time before I’m feeling confident however that
is a long enough time frame to begin to seeing
improvements and to notice I’m making less mistakes
and keeping in time with my peers.

Yes I can confidently say that I have improved my ability to dance and my focus towards learning
repertoire. It has been a gradual process but from when I set myself this target I have ignored my
confidence issues and applied full concentration to each workshop, my increase in my level of focus
helped me improve but also watching back videos of me dancing, since we record a lot as evidence for
our blogs I had constant videos to watch and see where I was making the mistakes which was
extremely helpful. It is still got a way to go but I feel each session I begin to improve more which is only
increasing my confidence regarding dance ability. It’s also allowing me to improve as an overall
performer giving me time to focus on polishing particular moves and refining particular sequences
rather than focusing on timing and doing a move correctly.

8. SMART TARGETS - Long Term target 3 ON SINGING SKILLS

I need to improve on my breath control and my
singing range. The only previous singing I have
done on stage is in school shows, normally
ensemble singing and once a character solo in
Anything Goes despite this being nerve wracking it
wasn’t a difficult song to sing and it didn’t help me
towards knowing what range I have in my voice. I
will explore my singing range by putting myself
forward for different songs in various genres and I
will improve my breath control by spending time
with teachers and asking for honest criticismas to
when I should inject breaths into the song to
prepare myself for longer and harsher notes, if I
gain this skill this will help me have a larger range in
my singing ability and will help me to perform
different notes and lengths in key.

practicing whenever I can with my efforts and
teachers help this should help to meeting my

This will be achievable by putting in time and
staying after school with particular teachers that I
know will help, if I begin to gain a better
understanding in breaking down a song and
injecting particular breaths into them. I will build
vocal strength by singing outside of rehearsal
practicing over and over again until I feel
comfortable with my performance capability.

This is a realistic target because I feel it’s a
necessary skill to retain if I’m wanting to have a
career in musical theatre. Reasons for not having it
already is due to the fact I don’t have a lot of
knowledge in how to execute a song perfectly
injecting particular breaths in moments to hit a
higher or lower key. Once I succeed I will begin to
sound better and perform better.

showcase because once I come back I want to be
able to tackle any song thrown at me, plus
throughout half term I can practice what I’ve been

not forgetting everything I’ve learnt.

difference has it made to you as an actor?
Yes after reflection I would state with full confidence that I have increased my singing ability and my
knowledge in techniques to apply to particular notes so I struggle less and sound better. First of all I
increased my knowledge in singing terminology which allowed me to focus on different particular
aspects when it comes to voice, it also massively helped that I was casted in the school show as a
male lead who had multiple numbers so even outside the BTEC workshops I had pressure on me to
sing correctly, this allowed me to constantly receive advice from the various singing specialists we
had, in and out of the stage space. I definitely achieved this target by half term, however I still have
much to learn and am still not fully comfortable with particular notes and songs but this gives me
room for constant progression. Particularly as an actor this has helped as I can focus on my
articulation with the body and voice whilst delivering the song which allows me to enhance my
characterisation even more and make me a more stand out performer.

I need to improve on the levels of commitment I
put in, by this I mean dedicating more time outside
of sixth form into; researching my roles, learning
lyrics, practicing song and dance and breaking
down my scripts. Through this course I want to
immerse myself in all the work a musical theatre
performer would have to do, on and off stage.
Therefore I must spend more time doing all those
actions to increase my dedication and
professionalismtowards the course.

I can safely say this target was achieved the quickest from the second I wrote this segment I applied
it immediately to my life. I’ve dedicated a huge amount of hours outside workshops in refining my
skills I already have and skills I have just learnt, I have also spent numerous hours researching my
roles making sure I understand the character inside and out. This has certainly been great as it has
educated me so much regarding what themes I am trying to communicate through different
characters and the work I have put in is definitely expected in order to be the best performer I can
possibly be.
