Teaser Trailers - Analysis Gabrielle Wilson 13E
The Social Network (2010) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Esw8F5_GE9s This trailer is for a movie based on the creation of social networking site Facebook. Unlike most trailers, this features no exact scenes from the movie; and we are given an idea of the plot from the characters messaging on Facebook. We see as the characters start off astounded my their success, but as the trailer progresses conflict and arguments occur via the messages on screen.
We hear numerous voiceovers throughout the trailer, and again this emphasizes the anger and conflict the characters feel towards each other. One moment that stands out to me is when ‘Eduardo Saverin’ types “MARK!!!!” and then the screen fades to black. This is ominous and shows how Mark and Eduardo will fight during the film, as at the beginning of the trailer they were friendly and courteous to one another. The title of the film appears towards the end, and I think the fact that it is in the same font as ‘Facebook’ makes it an effective and memorable title. Again an ominous, cruel voiceover plays.
American Psycho (2000) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCf55xWCXTs This trailer begins with the main character appearing Intelligent and successful. The backing music used matches this atmosphere, with it’s upbeat tempo and modern sound. Around 31 seconds in the atmosphere changes to violent and crazed, and again the music fits this and becomes ominous and dangerous sounding.Throughout this part of the trailer, I like how straight cuts are used often to show the hectic ness and danger that the main character is creating, as it also reflects his frenzied mind and the overall feel of the film. A voice over from the main character including lines such as “I don’t think I can control myself” and “Something bad will happen” emphasizes the plot line of the main character being a vicious murderer.
My favourite scene and the one that I find most effective is when he peels of a thin mask. Used by people to improve/care for their skin, the audience see that the main character is a modern man who cares greatly about his appearance. This contrasts greatly to the other actions we see during the trailer as he is obviously a very violent and disturbed person. The mask represents the fact that a deep aggressive element of his personality is hidden, and that the show of smart suits, styled hair and business talk is just a façade.
Transformers (2007) In this trailer, again no direct footage from the movie is shown. Instead we are shown true life footage of a space launch, and then edited footage to link to the movie. The whole atmosphere throughout the trailer is ominous and frightening, and the deep, minimal backing track enhances this. As the camera shots are as if taken in real life, it is made more believable and therefore more disturbing for the audience as the camera is destroyed by an unknown creature. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ItK90yvA44
The wording over the trailer is, I think the most effective part. “It’s final transmission” and “It was the only warning” are very ominous and evil sounding, and without the a voiceover the silence makes it all the more chilling.
Scott Pilgrim VS The World (2010) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGQdk8Wmk0k As the trailer begins we think the film is going to be mostly a romantic/comedy, but this quickly changes as fights begin and the film appears quick paced and action filled. The trailer appeals to a younger audience with it’s action, bright garish colours used throughout (in characters, effects) and upbeat music. I like how the trailer uses quirky effects that mimic those found in comic books or videogames (such as K.O etc.), as I think it makes it unique and memorable.

127 Hours (2010) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhPEMhSoGKc
This trailer is for a film based off true life events. Therefore I think the shots where it is as if he is using a camera are very effective and make the trailer more realistic. The trailer almost has like a documentary feel to it, as we follow a man on his adventures. The trailer is visually very interesting as the camera captures wide landscapes, and a particular scene that stands out for me is as the girls fall into the water. This contrasts greatly with the surrounding dry, orange environment. The backing track used is upbeat and exciting, creating the atmosphere and adventure and different worlds. However, the trailer takes a menacing twist towards the end as the cheery explorer is trapped in the mountains left screaming alone. The words “Every Second Counts” links back to the title concerning time, and gives the audience and ominous worrying feeling.
