Vincent Emanuele presented on how a group of data scientists used hackathons to build tools to help fight human trafficking. They collected data from sites used for trafficking and organized it in a database. Through hackathons with law enforcement, they identified a need to quickly identify traffickers from victim interviews. This led them to develop a prototype called the Pimp Profiler that could discover a trafficker's identity and additional information within a critical window to increase convictions. They then held another hackweek to create a minimum viable demonstration of their profiling framework and connective graph approach.

Shining Stars De-Vio Pitch Presentation Zimbabwe
The Shining Stars team created the De-Vio app to help address the problem of gender-based violence in Zimbabwe. 68% of women in Zimbabwe experience abuse but many are afraid to report it due to stigma or a lengthy reporting process. De-Vio allows easier and immediate reporting of abuse cases through a mobile app and connects users to support organizations. It includes an emergency button and provides information to help women recognize abusive behaviors. The app aims to make the reporting process shorter and more accessible than traditional methods.

To better understand how women fall prey to this cycle of violence and abuse the New York-based NGO, Good Shepherd International Justice Peace Office (GSIJP) undertook a globe-spanning survey to determine who’s most at risk and how this pattern can be broken. This report examines stigma faced by survivors of sexual violence in conflict zones. It draws on interviews with over 400 survivors and community members in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The report finds that stigma poses tremendous barriers to recovery for survivors and hinders their ability to seek justice against perpetrators. It presents recommendations to address stigma and ensure justice for survivors from their perspective, including calling on governments to take action to establish a world where sexual violence is unacceptable.

Not a single day passes by without a report of rape somewhere in India. Thanks to digital media tools and apps, we now get to see our faces every moment wherever, whenever. In India, someone somewhere is violating a women’s dignity every 15 minutes (Ministry of Home Affairs report 2018). Every year thousands of women report rape cases to the police and equal or more cases have never been reported. According to National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), women reported 34,000 rapes in 2018, which is nearly the same number of rape cases reported in 2017. In addition, 237,660 cognizable cases were registered in 2018.
The savagery and brutality of many of those rape cases are unthinkable. Very recent cases of Disha Salian (Bollywood), a Veterinarian (Hyderabad), Nirbhaya (New Delhi), Singur (West Bengal), Baran (Rajasthan), and Hathras (Uttar Pradesh), are some of the instances which have been recently covered by the media while thousands go unreported and uncovered.
Rape not only violates a women’s dignity but also reduces her to a level of a usable article of trade. And, if the perpetrator has means, power, access to power, or means to buy power, the perpetrator feels every object and every human being is a commodity. This must stop if we wish to call our surrounding society, instead of a jungle. In a jungle, everything and every being is a commodity if you have physical power.

Combating Child Trafficking A User’s Handbook
All through March and April 2006 there were several news reports about a senior official in the Ministry of External Affairs being charged for criminal conspiracy in a case of human trafficking. The case is under investigation by the CBI. Later the media drew attention to the sex racket in the State of Jammu and Kashmir, where people came out in protests seeking the names of politicians and bureaucrats involved in it. Then came the Nithari case in Noida, where possibilities of trafficking of children for sexual abuse as well as organ trade cannot be ruled out. The more recent one is the Gujarat politician Babu Bhai Katara, who was caught trying to smuggle a woman and a child out of the country, getting the two to pose as his wife and child.

Aged Care Plus Fellowship Report_USA Trafficking Study Tour
This document provides an overview of a study tour conducted by members of The Salvation Army Australian Eastern Territory to examine responses to human trafficking in the United States. The tour involved visiting 14 organizations involved in anti-trafficking work to understand different models of service delivery, legal frameworks, and best practices. The goals were to help develop The Salvation Army's strategic response to human trafficking in Australia and facilitate sector development.

Aids2012 Stigma index Belarus
Researchers in Belarus surveyed 370 people living with HIV about stigma using the PLHIV Stigma Index tool. They found issues like breaches of confidentiality and lack of access to treatment. However, the government and partner organizations took no action in response to the findings. As a result, the Belarusian HIV community had to advocate alone without political or financial support. International organizations also faced constraints in supporting advocacy work due to pressure from the government.

Not a single day passes by without a report of rape somewhere in India. Thanks to digital media tools and apps, we now get to see our faces every moment wherever, whenever. In India, someone somewhere is violating a women’s dignity every 15 minutes (Ministry of Home Affairs report 2018). Every year thousands of women report rape cases to the police and equal or more cases have never been reported. According to National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), women reported 34,000 rapes in 2018, which is nearly the same number of rape cases reported in 2017. In addition, 237,660 cognizable cases were registered in 2018.
The savagery and brutality of many of those rape cases are unthinkable. Very recent cases of Disha Salian (Bollywood), a Veterinarian (Hyderabad), Nirbhaya (New Delhi), Singur (West Bengal), Baran (Rajasthan), and Hathras (Uttar Pradesh), are some of the instances which have been recently covered by the media while thousands go unreported and uncovered.
Rape not only violates a women’s dignity but also reduces her to a level of a usable article of trade. And, if the perpetrator has means, power, access to power, or means to buy power, the perpetrator feels every object and every human being is a commodity. This must stop if we wish to call our surrounding society, instead of a jungle. In a jungle, everything and every being is a commodity if you have physical power.

Combating Child Trafficking A User’s Handbook
All through March and April 2006 there were several news reports about a senior official in the Ministry of External Affairs being charged for criminal conspiracy in a case of human trafficking. The case is under investigation by the CBI. Later the media drew attention to the sex racket in the State of Jammu and Kashmir, where people came out in protests seeking the names of politicians and bureaucrats involved in it. Then came the Nithari case in Noida, where possibilities of trafficking of children for sexual abuse as well as organ trade cannot be ruled out. The more recent one is the Gujarat politician Babu Bhai Katara, who was caught trying to smuggle a woman and a child out of the country, getting the two to pose as his wife and child.

This document provides an overview of a study tour conducted by members of The Salvation Army Australian Eastern Territory to examine responses to human trafficking in the United States. The tour involved visiting 14 organizations involved in anti-trafficking work to understand different models of service delivery, legal frameworks, and best practices. The goals were to help develop The Salvation Army's strategic response to human trafficking in Australia and facilitate sector development.

Aids2012 Stigma index Belarus
Researchers in Belarus surveyed 370 people living with HIV about stigma using the PLHIV Stigma Index tool. They found issues like breaches of confidentiality and lack of access to treatment. However, the government and partner organizations took no action in response to the findings. As a result, the Belarusian HIV community had to advocate alone without political or financial support. International organizations also faced constraints in supporting advocacy work due to pressure from the government.

End-to-end pipeline agility - Berlin Buzzwords 2024
We describe how we achieve high change agility in data engineering by eliminating the fear of breaking downstream data pipelines through end-to-end pipeline testing, and by using schema metaprogramming to safely eliminate boilerplate involved in changes that affect whole pipelines.
A quick poll on agility in changing pipelines from end to end indicated a huge span in capabilities. For the question "How long time does it take for all downstream pipelines to be adapted to an upstream change," the median response was 6 months, but some respondents could do it in less than a day. When quantitative data engineering differences between the best and worst are measured, the span is often 100x-1000x, sometimes even more.
A long time ago, we suffered at Spotify from fear of changing pipelines due to not knowing what the impact might be downstream. We made plans for a technical solution to test pipelines end-to-end to mitigate that fear, but the effort failed for cultural reasons. We eventually solved this challenge, but in a different context. In this presentation we will describe how we test full pipelines effectively by manipulating workflow orchestration, which enables us to make changes in pipelines without fear of breaking downstream.
Making schema changes that affect many jobs also involves a lot of toil and boilerplate. Using schema-on-read mitigates some of it, but has drawbacks since it makes it more difficult to detect errors early. We will describe how we have rejected this tradeoff by applying schema metaprogramming, eliminating boilerplate but keeping the protection of static typing, thereby further improving agility to quickly modify data pipelines without fear.

The Building Blocks of QuestDB, a Time Series Database
Talk Delivered at Valencia Codes Meetup 2024-06.
Traditionally, databases have treated timestamps just as another data type. However, when performing real-time analytics, timestamps should be first class citizens and we need rich time semantics to get the most out of our data. We also need to deal with ever growing datasets while keeping performant, which is as fun as it sounds.
It is no wonder time-series databases are now more popular than ever before. Join me in this session to learn about the internal architecture and building blocks of QuestDB, an open source time-series database designed for speed. We will also review a history of some of the changes we have gone over the past two years to deal with late and unordered data, non-blocking writes, read-replicas, or faster batch ingestion.
ViewShift: Hassle-free Dynamic Policy Enforcement for Every Data Lake
Dynamic policy enforcement is becoming an increasingly important topic in today’s world where data privacy and compliance is a top priority for companies, individuals, and regulators alike. In these slides, we discuss how LinkedIn implements a powerful dynamic policy enforcement engine, called ViewShift, and integrates it within its data lake. We show the query engine architecture and how catalog implementations can automatically route table resolutions to compliance-enforcing SQL views. Such views have a set of very interesting properties: (1) They are auto-generated from declarative data annotations. (2) They respect user-level consent and preferences (3) They are context-aware, encoding a different set of transformations for different use cases (4) They are portable; while the SQL logic is only implemented in one SQL dialect, it is accessible in all engines.
