PHARMACODYNAMICS

• What drugs do to the body
• How they do it
• Integrated process that involves
  receptors, agonists, and
  antagonists
WHAT IS A RECEPTOR???
 A macromolecule on the cell surface or in the cytoplasm
 A specific binding site for a chemical, such as a drug or hormone,
that produces a response in the cell
 Responses include stimulating, depressing, or blocking the action
ALKA SELTZER EXPERIMENT

    (TO DEMONSTRATE ACTIVITY)

A B
WHAT IS AN AGONIST???
 Any chemical, such as a drug or hormone, that binds to the
RECEPTOR on the cell, causing the cell to activate a response.
 The response may cause the activity of the cell to increase or
  decrease.
 Example: Norepinephrine attaches to receptors on the heart,
  causing the rate to increase.
 Example: Acetylcholine attaches to receptors on the heart,
  causing the rate to decrease.

AGONIST

IN

ACTION!
WHAT IS AN ANTAGONIST???
 Any chemical, such as a drug or hormone, that binds to a
RECEPTOR on the cell, to prevent activity
 Aka inhibitors
 Example: beta blockers used to treat high blood pressure
 Blocks signals from the sympathetic system to decrease heart
  rate and contractions.

ANTAGONIST

IN
ACTION!
WHY DO WE NEED TO KNOW
THIS?
By understanding pharmacodynamics, nurses
Can predict the patient’s response to the
   drug
  Assists with proper drug selection
  Assess the therapy effectiveness-successful
   or unsuccessful
  Keeps patient safe
