HOW CAN WE PREVENT
INFECTIONS AFTER
CESAREAN SECTION?

2. Rates of Caesarean section (CS) globally
• Caesarean section is one of the
commonest surgeries worldwide and in
Rwanda.
• Cesarean delivery rate worldwide is 15%
• Majority of those are in resource rich
nations (rate of 21.1%)
• Rate in US in ~33% - varies by state
dramatically
• In Chile 45%!
• in Rwanda 29%

3. • Cesarean section are associated with a 5 -20 times
increased risk of infection when compared to vaginal
delivery
Post C-section surgical site infection rate vary globally
United state 3-8%
Sub-Saharan Africa 3-24%
• Surgical site infection (SSI) following CS is a
common cause of morbidity with reported
rates of 3–15%.

4. • In Rwanda at CHUB ( Butare university
teaching hospital ) study found a
prevalence of SSI of 4.9% . Most of
infection ( 62.5%) developed after
discharge and the majority were
superficial site infection (75%) and
detected within 30 days post discharge
• More than 350 000 babies are born every
year in Rwanda(Around 1 district)

6. Unsterile procedure during c- section
• In our settings, sterilization
process in not well done
because of different causes like
using poor quality disinfectants,
untrained workers in charge of
sterilization and poor hygiene
in operating theater.

7. Neglecting safe-surgery checklist
• Normally, there are clinical guidelines
that shows actions to be undertaken
before, during and after operation but
health care providers neglect some steps
and this leads to increased risk of
infections to the patient.

8. Lack of maternal awareness about risk factors of post-c/section infections
• There are some factors that increase
the risk of post-c/section infections
such as poor hygiene after c/section
, inadequate nutrition, smoking

9. OUR SOLUTIONS

• C-S Infecontrol App

10. Lovin Desinfectant
• Our disinfectant will be made in locally available plants in Rwanda such as:
I. Lemon
II. Onion
III. Vinegar
• Their mixture contains acetic acid which makes them strong disinfectant
• This will be “made in Rwanda” product and will be very cheap for hospitals to buy it.
• It will help in sterilization of surgical instruments, hand washing, hygiene of mothers and
prevention of spread of germs in theaters.

• It will create jobs for population

• Producing product
• Testing it and requesting permission Rwanda Standards Board
• Selling the product to the hospitals and to the patients

13. C-S Infecontrol App
This App will be an educational and training platform for healthcare providers,
community health workers, and patients.
Its content will focus on articles about infection control, checklist protocols, and
hygiene practices in 3 languages (English, French and Kinyarwanda).
It will be designed in a creative way that helps people to learn about infection
control especially by using videos and podcasts.
Our team is made by skilled people who are able to develop this app and write
these articles.
