Case Study:
Long Tail Organic Search
1) how "ripe" long tail content can be identified
2) how we amplify content that is gaining traction
3) how we increase engagement and conversion
4) how this creates "evergreen" content
We identify a blog post that is receiving a modest increase in organic traffic for multiple
relevant keyword phrases. Traffic to the post has not resulted in any conversions
(ecommerce transactions). At this point, the post comes up on the second page of Google
results for the target keyword phrase, and is ripe for improvement.
NEXT STEPS: (1) get to the first page of Google results by increasing the quantity of
relevant content on the page, and (2) provide and link to product recommendations to
increase engagement, progression and purchase.

We add about 300 words of high quality content to the post, including relevant product
recommendations (green line above). Approximately two weeks later the page appears on
the first page of Google search for the target keyword phrase (blue line) and two months
later, appears at #6 for the same search.
Case Study:
Long Tail Organic Search
4
Four months later, we have turned this into an "evergreen" page, where the content is
consistently relevant to the audience we are targeting. This page is not constrained by
obsolescence (like technology content), nor is it seasonal or time-sensitive. With some
ongoing attention (more content, incoming links, maybe an infographic or embedded
YouTube video), we can strengthen our position in Google results, and continue to generate
long-term organic search traffic and conversions.
3
The week after implementing
product recommendations, the
post generates 4 transactions
and $163 in revenue. This
gives the post a run-rate of
$600 a month or $7,200 a
year.
Looking for these kind of
opportunities is part of the
cycle, where we generate
content, improve on what we
have and ideally generate
breakout successes like this
one.
