TB, or tuberculosis, is an infectious disease that was historically called "white plague" or "black death." Treatment used to focus on isolating patients, but the development of DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Short-course) changed treatment to be more positive. DOTS involves supervised treatment to ensure patients follow the full treatment regimen and cure rates have increased as a result of DOTS while infection and mortality rates have decreased globally.
