Meaning of Taxonomic Key: A taxonomic key is a device for quickly and easily identifying to which species an unknown organism belongs. The key consists of a series of choices, based on observed features of the living specimen. It provides a choice between two contradictory statements resulting in the acceptance of one and the rejection of the other. A single pair of contradictory statements is called a couplet and each statement of a couplet is termed a lead. By making the correct choice at each level of the key, one can eventually arrive at the name of the unknown organism. Merits of keys Facilitates identification of specimen • Key is dichotomous offering two alternatives at any point. • Easy to apply • Provides best assurance for correct identification. • It provides tools for taxonomic analysis since in the preparation of key, one must select, evaluate and arrange taxonomic characters. • Key characters apply equally to all individuals of the population regardless of age and size. Demerits of keys: Construction of key is a time-consuming task. Key does not provide biological and phylogenetic characters. It does not provide information of cytological and molecular characters of a specimen. Not useful in identification of all specimens.

Peripatric speciation was Proposed by Ernst Mayr. In this type of speciation, a small group of members inhabiting a peripheral region of the range undergo reproductive isolation to form a new species. Many a time, it is considered to be a variation of allopatric speciation.

Archaeopteryx is a genus of feathered dinosaurs that lived around 150 million years ago during the late Jurassic period and is considered a transitional form between non-avian dinosaurs and modern birds, exhibiting both avian and reptilian features such as teeth, claws, and a long tail as well as feathers and a wishbone. Discovered in 1860 in Germany, Archaeopteryx has helped establish birds as modern feathered dinosaurs.

There are prezygotic mechanisms, which act before fertilization, including habitat isolation where species occupy different habitats, seasonal isolation with differences in breeding times, and behavioral isolation from variations in courtship displays. Postzygotic mechanisms occur after fertilization, such as gametic mortality where sperm are killed before reaching eggs, hybrid inviability where zygotes do not develop, and hybrid sterility where offspring are viable but infertile. - 5. 1 A key is essentially a printed information-retrieval system into which one puts information regarding a specimen in hand and from which one gets an identification of the specimen to whatever level the key is designed to reach. 2 In the absence of originally identified specimens of the species utilized for comparisons, the published description becomes the only tool. 3 In larger groups however it is the most tedious task to compare specimens with hundreds of thousands of published descriptions. 4 The task can be solved if the keys to the main group are made available. 5 The main purpose of the key is thus to facilitate identification or to distinguish one type of organism or object from another. 5

Nested Style: All couplets immediately followed the lead at the expense of separating the leads within a couplet. The most frequent sub-type of nested keys are called ‘indented key’. Linked Style: Leads within a couplet immediately follow each other making polytomous keys easy to achieve.

- 23. 23 1. Appropriate keys to be selected from floras, manuals, handbook, monograph, revision etc. Cultivated plants- not usually given in floras. So for these- manuals treating such plants to be used 2. Introductory comments to be properly read first 3. Both leads should be read before making a choice. Sometimes the first lead may seem tobe correct, the second lead may be more appropriate 4. The meaning of unknown terms should be checked using the glossary 5. When measurements are used such as the length of leaf, fruit etc. several materials/specimens to be measured 6. No decision to be taken based on single observation 7. Results should be verified by reading a description, comparing the specimen with illustration or an authentic herbarium specimen
