Legal/ethical issues
 One issue I may have is the use of offensive and explicit language and imagery in the content
of my magazine. This is because the target age range will include people of ages 16-17, who
legally and morally should not be exposed to vulgar language and images. To resolve this
issue I will not engage in the promotion of excessive foul language and I will not be including
any obscene images or gestures. Any sections that may potentially include light bad language
will be preceded by viewer discretion warnings.
 Another issue I need to be aware of is spreading misinformation within my magazine,
especially in the advertisements I plan to feature. This could be an ethical issue as using
misinformation for the purpose of gaining more subscribers could be seen as unfair and
insincere by the audience, and ultimately lose their subscriptions. It could also be a legal
issues as it is a legal requirement for the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) to review that
all advertisements are true, inoffensive and responsible. To prevent this I would make sure to
hire background researchers to ensure that all information presented in our magazine is
correct and factual.
 Another issue I need to take into consideration is to make sure my magazine doesn’t
contradict any copyright legislations (Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988, Intellectual
Property Act 2014). If any content in my magazine breeches IP then we could potentially be
liable to be subjected to a financial settlement to the accusers. To avoid this I will make sure
that all logos, designs, and images used in the content of my magazine are royalty free, or
original items and therefore my intellectual property, minimising the risk of breeching IP and
copyright legislations.
Legal/ethical issues
 Another issue I would take into consideration would be the representation of people of all
races and genders. Portraying a diverse range of cultures is an important detail in todays
society, as many issues to do with hate and prejudicial views span from ignorance and
misunderstanding. Therefore by representing different cultures it sets a good example for the
impressionable viewers of the magazine.
 Another issue would be the use of user data. I must make sure that all data collected is
necessary, and only used for its intended purpose. As well as this if any user wanted to see
how their data was being used, then they must be permitted this feature as per the Data
Protection Act (DPA). We must also make sure that all data collected is stored properly and
securely, only allowing access to certain trusted people.
 Lastly we must make sure that all content in my magazine conforms to the independent press
standards organisation’s (IPSO) standards. If someone files a complaint about our magazine
then the IPSO has the authority to make us change the content to fit the criteria, or outright
withdraw the magazine.
