This document discusses and compares several digital audio workstations and audio recording software programs and devices. It provides information on Audacity, an open-source digital audio editor; Adobe Audition, a digital audio workstation; Pro Tools, a digital audio workstation used for sound recording and production; Cubase, a digital audio workstation that enables editing of MIDI files and raw audio tracks; and Audiodesk, a multitrack recording and mixing application. It also discusses several handheld and portable digital audio recorders, including the Zoom H5, Olympus VN-541PC, Tascam DR-05, Yamaha PR7, Roland R-05, and Sony ICD-UX530.
2. Audacity
It is a digital audio editor and a recording computer software. It can record audio
from different sources and is used for post-processing of every type of audio. This
is done by adding a variety of effects to it such as trimming. Other features of
audacity includes multitrack mixing and noise reduction.
3. Bias peak
It is mainly available for Macintosh and is a type of digital audio editor. Many
musicians, artists and even amateurs use this for creating loops and CD
mastering. Editing the audio is normally done directly at the file level. There is no
need to import the audio to be edited to it.
4. Adobe audition
This is another type of digital audio workstation. Some features includes non
destructive mix environment and a destructive approach waveform editing view.
Audio can also be edited with the sound remover, pitch bender and preview editor
features.
5. Pro tools
It is developed for the microsoft windows and OS X operating systems. It is used
for sound recording and production. It can performs the functions of multitrack
tape recorder and audio mixer.
6. Cubase
It is a type of digital audio workstation which creates project and enable editing of
MIDI files and raw audio tracks. It can be presented in a variety of formats
including editing consoles.
7. Audiodesk
It is a multitrack recording, editing and mixing application available in classic Mac
OS and Mac OS X. However it does not include MIDI sequencing capabilities and
is only available as a bundled application with MOTU audio interfaces.
9. Zoom H5
This is an example of a handheld digital audio recorder which features
interchangeable input capsules with microphones which allows the recording of
four tracks simultaneously. Some examples of built in effects are pitch control and
playback speed.
10. Olympus VN-541PC
Some of its main features of this is instant dictation and noise cancellations which
reduces unwanted ambient noises for a clear playback quality.
11. Alesis: ADAT
It is a magnetic tape format used for the recording of eight digital audio tracks on a
S-VHS videocassette tape.
12. Tascam DR-05
It offers for tracks of recording to standard cassette tapes with a built in mixer. It
has a backlit screen, stereo condenser mic and a built in speaker,

It is an ultra-portable linear PCM recorder which provides high quality recording, it
has a newly developed crossed XY stereo microphone and the has a high
resolution stereo recordings. It also offers practice functions such as an onboard
tuner and metronome.
14. Roland R-05
Some of its features includes a built in stereo mic or external input, onboard
editing functions and record 16-bit WAV and MP3 files simultaneously. Examples
of onboard editing functions also includes a built-in reverb.
15. Sony ICD-UX530
This is one type of digital voice recorder which has a built-in USB. it also has a
high sensitivity and less noise built-in s-microphone system and a wider recording
range than the previous models.
16. Fostex
Fostex makes a vairty of electronics, the mains being headphones and desk
mixers a few examples are the fostex mr8 which is a mixing desk and the fostex
th-x00 which is a set of headphones.
17. Marantz
The Marantz PMD620 is a high performance handheld digital voice recorder that
is a very small size. It Features include an inbuilt stereo condenser microphone
array for ‘point and shoot recording’, and an intuitive control surface for 'one-hand'
operation, with thumb operated transport wheel and tactile, red illuminating, record
button.
19. Fixed
If a camera has a fixed microphone, this means there is a microphone fixed into
the camera, there is positives and negatives about this, the main positive is that
when buying the camera you don't have to worry about a microphone. The
negative is that quality of the microphone might not be the quality you want

A detachable microphone can detach from the camera, this also has its positives
and negatives. The positive being the quality of sound will be a lot better as your
paying more for a better microphone, the negative will be the size it adds onto the
camera.
21. Desktop recorders
A desktop recorder is a piece of equipment that can record your computer screen
whilst you use it. For example i could record my screen whilst playing a game like
minecraft.
22. mono/stereo recording devices
Mono uses one, stereo uses more than one. In monaural sound one single
channel is used. It can be reproduced through several speakers, but all speakers
are still reproducing the same copy of the signal. In stereophonic sound more
channels are used.
23. Multi- track recorders
is a method of sound recording developed in 1955 that allows for the separate
recording of multiple sound sources or of sound sources recorded at different
times to create a cohesive whole.
