was givenabudgetof $306 million and made $2.066 billion at the box office. The film was 2 hours 15
minutes long.
Purpose
I thinkthat there are 3 differentpurposesof the film.Ithinkthatthe mainreasonwas to make a
profit,thisisbecause onthe 30th
of October2012 Disneybought lucasfilmfor$4.05 billion.Disney
boughtlucasfilmsotheycouldrelease more starwarsfilmsandmerchandisetomake more money. I
thinkthat anotherpurpose istoentertainthe viewers.Thisisapurpose of the filmbecause many
people wantedmore starwarsfilmsfromafterthe originals. The lastpurpose istoeducate,Ithink
thisbecause theyhave addedmore of a multi-culturalcastandmore female leadrolesandIthink
that thisisto teach people aboutequality.Ialsothinkthattheyare trying to teach childrenabout
goodand evil. Ithinkthatit will appeal tofemalesasthere are now female maincharacterssuchas
Reywhowill appeal asrole modelstofemales.Ithinkitwill alsoappealtothe oldergenerationwho
watchedthe originalsasthere are lotsof charactersfrom the original filmssuchasleiaand Han solo.
LastlyI think itwill appeal to the youngergenerationasthere are new characterssuch as Reyand
Finnand there are lotsof explosionsandflyingwhichthe youngergenerationslike

The genre of thisfilmissci-fi.Science fictionsisnormallyspeculationaboutthe future. There are
manysci-fi codesandconventions inthe force awakens suchas;robotslike c3po,bb8 andr2d2,
spaceshipslike the millenniumfalcon,x wingsandtie fighters, there wasalsolotsof space andweird
planetssuchas jakkuand starkillerbase. There’salsoalienssuchasrathtars,niennunb,andmaz
katana. There’s alsohightechweapons/gadgetssuchasthe lightsaberand the starkillerbase.
Form
The force awakenswasshoton KodakfilmandAbrahams used35mm filmandbitsin Jakkuwas
filmedon65mm IMAXformat forbetterquality.The 35mm filmwould’ve appealedtothe older
audiencesasitmade the filmmore like the originalsastheywere shoton35mm filmwhereasthe
65mm IMAXformat would’ve appealedtothe youngeraudience astheywould’vegrown up
watchingitin that formatas it came out fairlyrecently.
Style
J. J.Abrahamswentfor the 80’s nostalgiaas the prequelswere hatedastheyweren’tlike the
originalssohe wentbackwiththe 80’s theme toplease the audiences.We see thiswithall of the
returningcharacterssuch as Luke,leiaandHan soloandother nostalgicthingsfromthe originals
such as the robots,millenniumfalconsanddarthVader’smask.Abrahamsalsofilmedon35mm film
so itis more like the originals.Thiswill make the filmmore appealingtothe oldergenerationwho
grewup watchingthe originalsasthe filmwill be more likethem.

2. Content and meaning
The firstshot of the trailerisa close upof someone inragsand goggles.We laterrealise thatthat
personisRey.Her goggleslooksimilartoStormtrooperonesandshe lookslike aJawwaor a Tuscan
raider,I thinkthatthiswouldmake the olderfanswhowatchedthe originalsfeelaconnectionwith
herand compare her to them.Also,Ithinkthather clothing(the rags) makesherlooklike apeasant
or a scavengerandthiswouldmake the audience feel sorryforher.Inthe firstshotshe is staring
downthe camera, I thinkthatshe is staringdirectlyatthe audience sothat theyfeel aconnection
withherthe firsttime we see her.Lastly,I feel thatshe wasusedas the firstshot to show thatshe is
the maincharacter. The onlynoise inthisshotis1 simple pianochord.Ithinkthatthisisto show
howcalm and simple rayslife isatthe minute.The second shotisa longshotof Rey in whatlooksto
be a space ship.Thisisthe firstfull bodyshotwe see of Rey,and she is climbingupaspace ship,she
isveryhighup and lookstobe inan engine roomof the space ship,she isstill wearingherragsand
youcouldinfershe isscavenginginthe engine roomof an oldship.Thisoldshipcouldbe fromthe
original filmswhichcouldcause anemotional response fromthe audience if theylikedthe originals.
Alsothisshowsthatshe is veryresourceful andknowsherwayround the shipas she knowswhere
the engine roomisand where the mostexpensivepartsare,thisgetsthe audience questioning
where she gother skillsfrom.Alsothe waythatshe isclimbingthe space shipshowshow agile and
athleticshe is.Shot3 is longshot/Birdseyeviewof Rey jumpingfromaledge ontoarope andshe is
descendingdownthe rope intoanotherpartof the ship,thisinmy opinionshowshow brave she is
as she couldeasilyfall toherdeathand italsoshowsshe is willingtodoanythingto survive,
furthermore Ithinkitshowsthatshe hasdone thismany timesbefore whichmakesthe audience
wantto knowabout herlife. AlsointhisshotisanotherpianochordwhichI thinksymboliseshow
alone she feels.The nextshotisanextreme longshot whichshows Rey descendingonthe rope
whenshe isnearthe bottom,italsoshowsthe inside of whatlookstobe a hangerinthe space ship,
thisisshownas you can see an tie fighterwingonthe floor,anditalsolookssimilar tothe hanger
obi wan and anikanhad to escape frominthe revenge of the siths,Ithinkthiswill bringback
memoriesof the fansof star wars as bothof these thingsare biginthe star wars universe andIthink

speaking,anewcharacter tothe star wars franchise,othinkthattheyusedherinthisdialogue so
the audience wouldformanewconnectionwithherandquestionwhoshe isastheywouldn’thave

dessert.Thisdessertscenerywill haveameaningtothe audience asitwill remindthemoff jakku,it

wantto knowhow theydidthisandexactlyhow bigare they,itmay alsomake the fanswant to
knowaboutthe rebelsastheyaren’tinthe traileryetand the audience maywantto know about
them.The tie fighterscreate nostalgiaastheywere inthe original filmsandwere abigpart of itas
theywere the mainspace shipsforthe darkside.The snow inthe backgroundshowsthattheycould

fact that all of the Stormtroopersare stoodinsome sort of formation,andthere seemstobe one

are similartothe Nazi party,thisis because inNazi rally’sHitlerusedtostand infrontof all of the
Nazi’sandgive speechesandthere wasnormallyared Nazi bannerbehindhim.Alsothe redonthe
Firstorderbannercouldrepresentdeathand evil.There isapianochord as this shotstarts and you
hearthe persononthe ledge yell somethingtoall of the Stormtroopers,believethatthisshowsthat
he is the newleaderof the firstorder. The nextshotis a close upof a Stormtrooperwithbloodon
hishelmet,he takesthe helmetoff andislookingscared.Thisisthe audience gettingintroducedto
the nextprotagonist, Finn.Whenwe firstsee hisface he looksreallyscaredandthere isavoice over
of himsaying“I wasraisedto doone thing.”I thinkthat thisshowsthat he wasmade to be a storm
trooperand he doesn’twantto.This isshownbythe lookof regretand disgustonhisface whenhe
tookthe helmetoff andthe tone of hisvoice whenhe saidhe was“made” to doit as if he was
forcedto and hadno choice and feelsdisgusted.There isnow alongshot of a new andimprovedtie
fightercrashingdowntoa planet.Atthe start of the shot we are lookingintospace andsee a star
destroyerandthe nightskyand stars,this createsa lotof nostalgiaasall of these thigsare from the
originalsandplayedamassive partand wheneveryousee themyouwill thinkof starwars.We dot
know whatplanetthe tie fighterisfallingtowardshoweveritlooksquite sandysoItcouldbe the
one Rey was on,we also don’tknowwhoisin the space shipso thismakesuswant to know whois
on the shipand if theysurvive.Inthisshotwe alsohearthe noise as the tie fighterfliespastthe
camera thiscreatesa nostalgiafeelingforthe fansasthe noise isso well knowntostarwars fans
and wouldprobablycreate anemotional response fromthe audiences.We alsohear Finnsay“but
I’ve gotnothingto fightfor”in myopinionthisshowsthathe doesn’twantto fightforthe firstorder
as he has no reasonto. We thenhave a longshotof Finnwalkingawayfromthe camera, similarto
how Rey did earlieron,he isholdinghisjacketandisstaringout to the desertthathe is now on,this
makesme believethat Finnwasinthe tie fighterandmanagedto escape the firstorderand survived
the crash as it seemedlikehe wantedtoleave the firstorderandbecause the planetlookssimilarto
the one the tie fighterwasfallingto.Now Rey andFinnare probablyonthe same planetitmakes
fanswonderif theyare goingto team upand worktogetheras theyare both main characters,it

Thisis alsothe firsttime we see andhear the new villainKylo Renashe says“nothingwill standin
our way”this showsthathe is willingtodowhateverittakeshoweverwe don’tknow whathisgoal
isso thismay entice people togoandsee the film.Itthencuts to a close up of kylorensface and we
can now see thathe is wearingamask, thisisbigas he isone of the only villains isstarwarsto wear
a mask apart fromdarth Vader,thismakespeople linkhimtodarth Vaderdue to hislooksand
muffledvoice andalsoaskingthe questionwhyhe iswearingamaskand whathe lookslike underit.
Betweenthisshotandthe nextshothe says “I will finishwhatyoustarted”andthe nextshotis a
close upof darth Vader’scrumpledhelmet,Ithinkthatthiswas done toshow that kyloistalkingto
Vadersayinghe isgoingto complete hisworksbasicallysayingkyloishisapprentice.Thisgets
people askingwhatunfinishedbusiness Vaderhad.Italsomakespeople feelsadtosee Vader’s
crumpledhelmetashe was sucha bigpart in the originalsandisnow dead.Andthismay also

kylothistime usingthe force insomeone,thislightingmakeshimlookevenmore menacingasitis

gettingreallyhurtwhichjustshowsthe powerof kylo Ren.The musicisbuildingupandthenitcuts
to a longshot of some treesgettingdestroyedandblownawaybysomethingredwhichisprobably
the red beamthat flewpastkyloearlieron.Asthe weaponissopowerful itleadspeopletoaskwhat
it is.It couldbe a newdeathstar as in the oldonesit gotdestroyedsotheyprobablymade another
one.The musicis buildingupalotlike earlieronandthenthe shotchangesand and so doesthe
musicthe musicturns much more happyand upbeatandthisis because itisnow the millennium
falconon the screen.Itis beingchasedby2 tie fightersinwhatlookstobe the same planetthat Rey

falconwill be inthe newmoviesanditisrelatedtostar wars massivelyandeveryone hasa
connectionwithit,italsoshowsthe firstbitof actioninthe trailerand fastflyingchaseswhichwill
make the youngeraudienceswanttogo andsee it..We hear Rey say “there were storiesaboutwhat
happened.”Andthenitcutsto anothershotof the millenniumfalcongettingchasedandshotatby
the tie fighters.The happymusicisstill playingandwe hearthe tie fighterandmillenniumfalcon
noise thatwe have grownto love fromthe olderfilms.Then there’s anothershotof the falcon
weavinginandout whichshowssomeone whoknow whattheyare doingis flyingitandthenwe
heara voice.Itis Han solowhosays“it’strue” thisisanothermassive partin the trailerasthisshows
us that Han will be inthe filmandthisisanothersellingpointashe isa fan favourite.Italsoshows
that Han and Rey are togetherastheyare speakingto eachother,thismakesthe audience wonder
whatadventurestheywill goon.It thencuts to a shot of Rey and Finnstaringat somethingonside
the millenniumfalcon,theylooksurprised.Thiscouldshow thatitwasthemflyingthe millennium
falconwhichmakesusask howtheylearntto flylike thatandalsohow theygotthe ship.Nextisa
close upof Han soloand he says “”all of it” he toois onthe millenniumfalconprovingthathe iswith
Rey and Finnand thathe istalkingtothem.It alsoshowsthat he is definitelygoingtobe inthe film

lookinglike they’re abouttofight.Thisis nostalgicasx wingswere the Jedi’s mainfightersinthe
originalsandtheystill are here bringingbackmanymemoriesforolderfans.AlsoIthinkthisshot
was putin andaimedat the youngeraudienceswhowouldlike fastchasesandfighting.Inthe last
fewshotsthere hasbeenstar warsmusicwhichgetsyou inthe star warsmoodand getsfans

ruins,theyare shootingat somethingandinthe distance youcansee a lake and whatlooksto be
somethingflyingpastitwhichcouldbe the x wingsfromthe lastshot,thisalsogets the younger
generationexcitedasthere ismore fighting anditwill alsoexcitethe oldergenerationsas
Stormtrooperswhere ahuge part of the originalsandthe prequels.Inthisshotyoualsohear Han
solosay “the dark side”thismaybe toshow the viewerswhothe darkside are if theyhaven’tseen
star wars before asthe Stormtroopersare on the screen.Itthencuts to anothershotat what seems
to be the same locationasthere isa lake andruinsinthe backgroundandthere isan x wingchasing

the rebelsandthe firstorder.Thiswill make the youngeraudienceswanttogo to see itas theywill
be intriguedbythe fighting.There isthenalongshotoat what isprobablythe new rebel base, Poe
ducksunderan xwingandhe iswearinga flyingoutfitand Finniswalkingtowardshimwithhisgun,
Poe pats himon the back andthen Finnturns back andstares at him.Thisshotteachesus a lot.It
showsthat Finnescapedthe firstorderandnow workswiththe Jedi whichshowsthat Rey probably
made it withhimalongwith Han,it alsocouldshow that poe escapedkyloif thatis before this
scene.Italsoshowsthat Finnand Poe geton well andthisrelationshipcouldappealtothe female
audience.InthisshotHan soloalsosays“the Jedi”thisis to show the new audienceswhothe Jedi
are as theyare on the screenatthe time andto show whothe goodguysare. It thencuts toa shot
whichisprobablythe same place as earlieronas there are ruinsand a lake and an x wingis chasinga
tie fighterandblowsitup,thisshowsthat thisscene isgoingto be a massive fightandthat will
excite the youngeraudiences.Theythendoanamazingcutusingthe explosiontocutto another
explosiononthe planet Rey Finnandbb8 were on. Theyare runningtowardsomethinganditblows
up,if youwatch carefullyyoucansee a tie fighterflypastwhichshowsthatitwas probablythe tie
fighterthatblewitup. Itthencuts to a mediumshotfromthe otherangle showing Rey andFinn
lookingscaredastheycome to a haltas what theywere runningtojustgot blownup.Itthencuts to
a shot of Han, Rey,Finnand bb8 walkingpasta new robotina new castle lookingplace.This
intriguesfansasitis a newplace and notall the same as the originals.Italsoshowsthattheyare all
workingtogethernow.Itthencutsto a shotof R2D2 anda clockedfigure whichwe canguessis Luke
as he has a metal lefthandandinthe originalshe hadhislefthandcut off. Thisis a bigpart inthe
traileras itshowsthat Luke isprobablygoingto be inthe filmeventhoughthe castlistdidn’thave
himin it,thiswouldmake fanswantto go to see if he isactuallyinit or if thisis a new character. This
shotis very nostalgicasR2D2 is a massive partof star warsas he has beenineveryoneand Luke is
alsoa huge part as he was the protagonistinthe originals.AndyouhearHansolosaying“they’re
real”I thinkthat thisisto showhe istalkingto Rey andtellingheraboutthe storiesshe has heardof.
It thencuts to a shot of a lot of Stormtrooperswithalot of fire aroundthemand a new space ship
landing,thisspace shipcouldbe Kylorensasit has neverbeenseenbefore andhe isthe new villain.

6. It thencuts to a shot of whatlooksto be the same scene asthe lastone as there isfire and a lotof
Stormtroopersaroundhoweverthere isone thatstandsout comparedto the othersas she issilver.
Thisis the firsttime we meetcaptainphasmaandthis makesherlooksreallypowerful asitseems
that she and herStormtroopersjustsetthisplace onfire,whichgetspeople askingwhytheydidit.
The nextshotis the firsttime we see Renuse hislightsaberanditlooksreallycool andwouldmake
manyof the youngeraudienceswanttogo. It isvery nostalgicas we can hear the lightsabernoisefor
the firsttime inthe trailerand lightsaberandtheirnoisesare verywellknowninthe starwarsseries.
It lookslike he isinthe same place captainphasmawas inas there isfire andStormtroopersaround
him.It thencuts to a shotof Rey insome snowyplace crying,thissnowyplace couldbe the first
orderbase that we saw earlierasit wasquite snowy.Itlookslike she isholdingsomethingor
someone butwe can’tsee as it isout of focus.This shot getspeople wonderingwhyshe iscrying.
There isthena shotof Finn,Hanand Chewbacca inwhat lookstobe the ruinsfromearlierwiththeir
handsin the surrenderpositionhowevertheyare loweringthem, thiscouldshow thattheywere in
trouble andthe x wingscame to save them.Alsothisshotisvery nostalgicas we see thatchewie is
inthe filmandeveryone loveschewieandaseverhe is withHan.There is thena shotof bb8 in the
side of an x winglike R2D2 usedtodo for Luke and Anakinandlotsof xwingare flyingtowardsthem,
the backgroundisverysnowywhichcouldshow theyare at the firstorderbase.In thisshotBB8 lets
out a distressedsoundasif he isscaredthat so manytie fightersare comingtowardsthem.Thisshot
alsoshowsthat there will be alotmore fighting.The shotthenchangesandwe see Poe inan x wing
and hisrebel outfit.Thisshowsusthatpoe isa rebel fighterpilotandhe mayhave beenfightingat
the place where the ruinsare also thatbb8 couldbe hisdroid.Overthe lastcouple of shots we hear
Maz say“the force,itis callingtoyou”thismakesus wonderwhoshe istalkingtoas this showsthat
there will be anotherJedi orsiths. Itthencuts to anothershotof the x wingsand tie fightersfighting
overthe snowyplanet.Thiswill make the youngeraudienceswanttogo due to the action.Alsoitis
very nostalgicasit will remindthe fansaboutthe battle of hothwhere the Jedi are fightingthe siths
on the snowyplanet,alsothe noisesof the spaceshipsandthe shootingis nostalgicastheyare the
same noisesinall star warsand are instantly recognisable.Itthencutsto a shot of lotsof storm
troopers runningoff of a spaceshipandthere islotsof shootingbetweenthemandwhoeverthey
are fighting,we can’tsee. Thisalsomakesthe youngeraudience excited.Itthencutsto a medium
shotof Rey in whatlooksto be a forest,she looksveryangryand isshootinga pistol,thisshotisvery
interestingaswe cannotsee whoshe is shootingatand the lookon herface showshatredsowe
wantto knowwho she hatessomuch. It thencuts back to a shotfrom the place withthe ruinsand
showsa storm troopergettingkilledbyanx wingand debrisflyingeverywherethisshowseven
