Target Audience Profile
Gender
The gender of my Target Audience is a combination of both males and females
– I want my magazine to appeal to all students in further education.
This is because Solihull Sixth form celebrates it’s acceptance and wide range
of diversity in students. Furthermore the contents of my student magazine is
going to consist of various issues that are pertinent to all students within the
sixth form, with a common denominator of helping students succeed and do
their best.
I do not want to differentiate between men and women as that would narrow
down my target audience , making it more of a niche market, and although it
would be easier to focus on specific gender related issues, I believe in creating
equality between the sexes.
My magazine is also LGBTQ+ friendly and embraces other genders and
people of various sexualities and of various religions. It will not be as focussed
on specific things such as religion or sports or enrichments but rather on areas
such as UCAS applications, homework tips or revision guides.
Age
The age of my target audience is directed towards those currently in further
education. Specifically, students between the ages of 16 and 19. This is because I
am aware that there are many students in the Sixth Form College who have
restarted their years and therefore vary beyond the usual age of 16 to 18.
This age is a common convention in colleges all around the United Kingdom, and I
will stick with this age range. The contents of my magazine will cater to this age
range by focussing upon central student matters such as settling into class, general
rules of the college and tips to help students cope.
The fact that my Target Audience is compromised of teenagers of all genders
between the ages of 16 and 19 means I will have to appeal to their current likes
and preferences but also understand that every student is different and it is unfair to
treat everyone fair; especially taking into consideration that there are many
students with physical disabilities, mental health issues or learning difficulties.
Social Class
The social class of my target audience is AB. Although the majority of students
themselves do not work or have a profession, nor posses any degrees, Solihull is
considered my some people as a “posh” area and most students most likely come
from families that are well off or average. However, I am not discounting students
who require bursaries or live in homes that are not as rich as others. Social Class is
going to have very little impact on my magazine as a whole because I am trying to
encompass all students and will have no bias towards students depending upon
wealth. I would try to use tips and tricks that would work for all and provide
equality in my Target Audience. These facts would affect the pricing of my
magazine.
Marital Status/Family Status
The marital status of my target audience is ranges from single to being in a
relationship. This is because the students are still young, being in the ages from 16-
19 and therefore are unlikely to have any serious relationships, however, there are
may also be students who have not entered into a relationship thus far. Naturally,
there are students who are in relationships, and as this is a mixed sex college I
would go as far to say that is very much possible for people to have a relationship.
That is not to say that relationships can occur only between males and females; my
magazine is also accepting of all LGBTQ+ members.
The family status of my Target Audience is that they most likely live at home with
their parents, as this is common in a large majority of teenagers in college, as
students are not yet independent enough to live on their own. College beings to
prepare them for university, if they choose to go. Most students here do have parents
or guardians looking after them and most likely have siblings as well.
Level of Education and Occupation
Naturally, as this is a magazine aimed towards students between the ages of 16
to 19 the level of education for my target audience is, of course, college level
education. However, there are possibly people who instead of pursuing a college
education went straight into getting a job or an apprenticeship. The
demographic of my magazine is strictly for students who are currently enrolled
into College or go to a Sixth form. This does not exclude students who have a
part time job or do volunteer work whilst at College.
As for students who did not pursue a college education, due to lack of
qualifications and experience that most teenagers have, their jobs are more
likely to be more common jobs such as working in retail. There is more
diversity in Apprenticeships however, as that includes both working and
teaching at the same time.
Lifestyle
The lifestyle of my target audience consists of general hobbies and interests that
most teenagers share, both male and female; this includes a large range of things
such as gaming, listening to music, shopping, hanging out with friends and doing
sports, to name a few.
College allows for students to pursue an enrichment, and this can range from
anything from something such as the Shakespeare Academy to a creative writing
enrichment; this gives students the opportunity to get involved with various
different opportunities and learn from them.
Recreational sports are available to all, and can be played casually or
professionally, although it is mostly males who play sports or pursue sports with a
strong dedication.
The kind of music that my target audience would listen to can range from current
pop songs in the charts to instrumental music or to pop punk and so forth and so
on; there is a large variety of students with different interests and one could go as
far as to stereotype students and guess what they like; students who mostly wear
black for example might be interested in rock or punk etcetera.
