Tall oil, a by-product of kraft pulping of pine wood, is formed by acidifying black liquor soap skimmings. It consists of resin acids or rosin, fatty acids, and neutrals. Crude tall oil is an excellent source of rosin and tall oil fatty acid, an industrial-grade oleic and linoleic acid blend. The bulk of the neutrals, largely esters of fatty acids, sterols, resin and wax alcohols, and hydrocarbons, boil at either lower or higher temperatures than the boiling range of the fatty and resin acids.

Pine chemicals are derived from the distillation of oleoresin or carbonization of wood. These chemicals are largely obtained from three sources: 1) living trees; 2) dead pine stumps and logs; and 3) as by-products of sulfate (or Kraft) pulping. Most distilled products are made from gum, stumps, logs, and sulfate pulp byproducts.
Pine oleoresin is a complex mixture of volatile and nonvolatile terpenes. Terpenes constitute the largest group of secondary products (with more than 40,000 different metabolites). Global investments in new forest plantations have focused on fast-growing hardwood plantations over the past 15 years. But there is a growing interest in developing new pine plantations for production of oleoresin.

Synthetic resins are materials with a property of interest that is similar to natural plant resins: they are viscous liquids that are capable of hardening permanently. Otherwise, chemically they are very different from the various resinous compounds secreted by plants. Synthetic resins comprise a large class of synthetic products that have some of the physical properties of natural resins but are different chemically. Synthetic resins are not clearly differentiated from plastics.

The chemical industry comprises the companies that produce industrial chemicals. Central to the modern world economy, it converts raw materials (oil, natural gas, air, water, metals, and minerals) into several different products. The Indian chemical industry is among the established traditional sectors of the country, playing an integral role in the national economic development. This sector, forming part of the basic goods industry, is a critical input for industrial and agricultural development. The fundamental nature and diversity of the industry is best understood from the fact that the industry itself is the largest consumer of its products, accounting for around 33% of total consumption. Alcohol is a very valuable material which has variety of uses such as for production of chemicals, as a source of energy and fuel etc. an alcohol is an organic compound in which the hydroxyl functional group (OH) is bound to a carbon atom. In particular, this carbon centre should be saturated, having single bonds to three other atoms. Some of the common examples of alcohol and its derivatives are acetaldehyde, acetic acid, chloroacetic acid, acetic anhydride, dimethyl acetamide, butyl alcohols, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, cellulose acetate, ethyl ether and many more. Ethanol can be used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, solvents, food, and chemical industries with a majority of industrial ethanol used as a solvent in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, paints, and lacquers. It is also used as a carrier in medicines.

Petroleum Products: Refining and Distillation (Lubricants, Waxes and Petroche...Ajjay Kumar Gupta
Petroleum refineries are large, capital-intensive manufacturing facilities with extremely complex processing schemes. More than 660 refineries, in 116 countries, are currently in operation, producing more than 85million barrels of refined products per day. Each refinery has a unique physical configuration, as well as unique operating characteristics and economics.
Rising crude oil prices powered revenue growth as refiners have passed costs down the distribution line. Since 2011, profit has steadily recovered in line with improving demand, while low domestic oil prices further bolstered margins. In 2016, profit is anticipated to rise slightly, though it remains below historic levels. This industry is anticipated to recover over the next five years as fuel prices rise and consumption increases.

Book on Petroleum & Petroleum Products Technology (Thermal Cracking of Pure Saturated Hydrocarbons, Petroleum Asphalts, Refinery Products, Blending and Compounding, Oil Refining and Residual Fuel Oils)
Petroleum products are materials derived from crude oil (petroleum) as it is processed in oil refineries. Unlike petrochemicals, which are a collection of well-defined usually pure chemical compounds, petroleum products are complex mixtures. The majority of petroleum is converted to petroleum products, which includes several classes of fuels.
Petroleum asphalt is a sticky, black and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid that is present in most petroleum crude oils and in some natural deposits. Petroleum crude oil is a complex mixture of a great many different hydrocarbons. Petroleum asphalt is defined as that part of crude oil which is separated from the higher-boiling hydrocarbons in crude oil by precipitation upon the addition of lower-boiling hydrocarbon solvents such as propane, pentane and hexane or petroleum asphalt. The precipitated material consists of asphaltenes which have an average molecular weight of about (800 - 2500 g/mole) and exist in the form of flat sheets of polyaromatic condensed rings with short aliphatic chains.

Definition of fatty esters Production processes of fatty esters and its derivative. Flow chart of fatty ester production Uses and application of fatty ester
3. What is Fatty Ester ? Fatty Ester is a type of ester that result from the combination of a fatty acid with an alcohol.
4. Types of Fatty Esters Isopropyl Esters Ethylexyl Esters Butyl Esters Glycerol Esters Glycol Esters Methyl Esters Polyol Esters
5. Production Processes of Isopropyl Esters and its derivatives Isopropyl esters of carboxylic acids are products manufactured by means of reacting fatty acids and isopropyl alcohol in a process called “esterification”.The by‐product of the reaction is water. FATTY ACIDS + ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL → ISOPROPYL ESTERS +WATER Lauric (C12), Myristic (C14), and Palmitic (C16) are the typical fatty acids used to manufacture isopropyl esters.
6. Production Processes of Isopropyl Esters and its derivatives Raw material is received in the plant and is heated before entering the reactor to form a ester through esterification .The reaction takes place at atmospheric pressure with the aid of catalyst. The reaction water is sent to the distillation column to distill off the excess alcohol for reuse. After completion of the reaction, the product is neutralized, and if necessary, distilled. The derivatives are Isopropyl Laurate (IPL), Isopropyl Myristate (IPM), and Isopropyl Palmitate (IPM).
7. Flow Diagram of Isopropyl Esters Production
8. Uses and application of isopropyl esters Isopropyl Laurates are used in cosmetics and lubricating oil additives. Isopropyl Myristate is used as an emollient and lubricant in preshaves, aftershaves, shampoos, bath oils, antiperspirants, deodorants, and various creams and lotions. Isopropyl Palmitate is used in cosmetics as a thickening agent and emollient. It is often used in moisturizes where it forms a thin layer and easily penetrates the skin. Isopropyl Palmitate is said to enhance silkiness in hair and skin.
9. Production Processes of Methyl Esters and its derivatives Methyl esters were produced by transesterification of palm oil with methanol in the presence of a catalyst (KOH).The rate of transesterification in a batch reactor increased with temperature up to 60°C. (Higher temperatures did not reduce the time to reach maximal conversion. The mixture enters into the second reactor to recover the excess of methanol and enters into the washing column together with water. Next, methyl esters goes to drying stage to be dried. After that, we got methyl esters.
10. Flow Diagram of Production Methyl Esters.
Until recently fats and oils have been in surplus, and considered a relatively low value byproduct. Only recently have energy uses of fats and oils begun to be economically viable. Food value of fats and oils is still far above the energy value of fats and oils. Industrial and technical value of fats and oils is still above the energy value of fats and oils. Animal feeds value of fats and oils tends to remain below the energy value of fats and oils.
With development of new technology oils and fats industry has undergone a number of changes and challenges that have prompted the development of new technologies, and processing techniques. Oils and fats constitute one of the major classes of food products.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

Introduction
Tall oil, also known as 'tallol' or 'liquid
resin', has three major components: resin
acids, fatty acids and unsaponifiables (also
known as "neutral compounds"). Tall oil is a
mixture of mainly acidic compounds found,
like turpentine, in pine trees and obtained
as a by-product of the pulp and paper
industry. It is used as a resin in many
different industries, including mining, paper
manufacture, paint manufacture and synthetic
rubber manufacture.
3. Tall oil is one of the two commercially
important by-products of the paper making
process, the other being turpentine. It
is produced by coniferous trees, and put
to a wide variety of end uses. In the
fuel crisis much research was done into
the use of tall oil as an alternative
fuel, and hormones were developed that
made young trees produce 5 to 10 times
their normal tall oil yield.

Tall oil, a by-product of kraft pulping of
pine wood, is formed by acidifying black
liquor soap skimmings. It consists of resin
acids or rosin, fatty acids, and neutrals.
Crude tall oil is an excellent source of rosin
and tall oil fatty acid, an industrial-grade
oleic and linoleic acid blend. The bulk of the
neutrals, largely esters of fatty acids,
sterols, resin and wax alcohols, and
hydrocarbons, boil at either lower or higher
5. www.entrepreneurindia.co
Tall oil itself has a variety of uses in
industry. It is used as a frothing agent in
the flotation process for reclaiming low
grade copper- lead- and zinc-bearing ores,
and as a solvent or wetting agent in a
variety of textile and synthetic fibre
manufacturing processes. The distilled fatty
acids are used in soaps, detergents and
disinfectants and as a base for lubricating
greases, textile oils, cutting oils and
metal polishes. They are also used as drying
6. www.entrepreneurindia.co
The fatty acids are unsaturated and on
exposure to air undergo autoxidation and
polymerization to form resin-like materials
which form a tough protective coating. Resin
acids are used in rubber polymerization and
compounding, as size to impart water
resistance to paper, and in adhesives and
printing inks. Resin acids are the major
component of a substance known as rosin,
which is used by musicians to improve the
grip of bows used for string instruments.

The book contains production details of
different products like recovery of crude tall
oil, Composition and properties of crude tall
oil, Lab. Scale fractional vacuum
distillation, tall oil soap acidulation,
purification of sulphate soap, hydrodynamic
separation of CTO, dimerization of tall oil
fatty acid, black liquor soap recovery
methods, tall oil in asphalt products and
petroleum uses, tall oil in liquid soaps, tall
oil in rubber, paper and printing inks etc.
8. The pine-derived chemicals market, in terms
of value, is projected to reach $4.8 Billion
by 2020, at a CAGR of around 4.7 % from 2015
to 2020. The gum rosin segment is projected
to be the largest and the fastest-growing in
the next five years owing to its high
benefits and uses. Gum rosin finds
application in adhesives, paints & coatings,
ink, rubber, paper, and gum-based candy. The
segment is projected to grow considerably at
a CAGR of 5.5 % between 2015 and 2020.
www.entrepreneurindia.co
9. The tall oil fatty acids segment accounted
for the second-largest share in the global
market in 2014 and is projected to follow the
same trend for the next five years.
The pine-derived chemicals market is highly
fragmented with the key market players
driving the growth using strategies such as
agreements, expansions, acquisitions, and new
product launches to mark their presence. The
market is competitive with leading players
being involved in the research & development
of new pine chemicals and their applications.www.entrepreneurindia.co
10. Applications:
As a component of adhesives, rubbers, and
inks, and as an emulsifier. The pitch is used
as a binder in cement, an adhesive, and an
emulsifier for asphalt. TOFA is a low-cost
and vegetarian lifestyle-friendly alternative
to tallow fatty acids for production of soaps
and lubricants. When esterified with
pentaerythritol, it is used as a compound of
adhesives and oil-based varnishes. Tall oil
is also used in oil drilling as a componentwww.entrepreneurindia.co
