The Effectiveness of Virtual R&D Teams in SMEs: Experiences of Malaysian SMEsNader Ale Ebrahim
The number of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), especially those involved with research and development (R&D) programs and employed virtual teams to create the greatest competitive advantage from limited labor are increasing. Global and localized virtual R&D teams are believed to have high potential for the growth of SMEs. Due to the fast-growing complexity of new products coupled with new emerging opportunities of virtual teams, a collaborative approach is believed to be the future trend. This research explores the effectiveness of virtuality in SMEs’ virtual R&D teams. Online questionnaires were emailed to Malaysian manufacturing SMEs and 74 usable questionnaires were received, representing a 20.8 percent return rate. In order to avoid biases which may result from pre-suggested answers, a series of open-ended questions were retrieved from the experts. This study was focused on analyzing an open-ended question, whereby four main themes were extracted from the experts’ recommendations regarding the effectiveness of virtual teams for the growth and performance of SMEs. The findings of this study would be useful to product design managers of SMEs in order to realize the key advantages and significance of virtual R&D teams during the new product development (NPD) process. This in turn, leads to increased effectiveness in new product development's procedure.
Using Contextual Graphs as a Decision-making Tool in the Process of Hiring Ca...gerogepatton
Poor selection of employees can be a first step towards a lack of motivation, poor performance, and high turnover, to name a few. It's no wonder that organizations are trying to find the best ways to avoid these slippages by finding the best possible person for the job. Therefore, it is very important to understand the context of hiring process to help to understand which recruiting mistakes are most damaging to the organization in order to reduce the recruiting challenges faced by Human resource managers by building their capacity to ensure optimal HR performance. This paper initiates a research about how Contextual Graphs Formalism can be used for improving the decision making in the process of hiring potential candidates. An example of a typical procedure for visualization of recruiting phases is presented to show how to add contextual elements and practices in order to communicate the recruitment policy in a concrete and memorable way to both hiring teams and candidates.

An Analytic Network Process Modeling to Assess Technological Innovation Capab...drboon
To handle swift changes in global environment, Technological Innovation Capabilities (TICs) is one crucial and unique strategy to increase firms’ competitiveness. This research proposed a systematic framework of TICs assessment by employing Analytic Network Process (ANP) method for solving the complicate decision-making and assessing the interrelationship among various evaluation factors, whereas the relative important weight data were provided by industrial experts based on pair-wise comparison. With the novel TIC assessment model, high-level managers could easily gain management information to rationalizes the decision-making process based on the most important criteria which affect the firms’ competitive advantages and the highest priority factors which were needed to be handled. The last section also displayed the application of TICs assessment on three Thai automotive parts firms, as case study.
Virtual R&D teams and SMEs growth: A comparative study between Iranian and Ma...Nader Ale Ebrahim
This paper explores potential advantages of using virtual teams for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with a comprehensive review on various aspects of virtual teams. Based on the standing of the pertinent literatures, attempt has been made to study the aspects by online survey method in Iran and Malaysia. In both countries, SMEs play an important role in their economies, employments, and capacity building. Virtual R&D team can be one of the means to increase SMEs efficiency and competitiveness in their local as well as global markets. In this context, surveys have been conducted to evaluate the effects of virtuality to the growth of SMEs. The study addresses some differences between two countries in engaging virtual research and development (R&D) teams in their SMEs. It is observed that there is a significant difference between the SMEs turnover that employed virtual team and that did not employ the virtual team. The way for further studies and recommend improvements are proposed.
Depending on the goal and industry sector a knowledge strategy can be defined taking different angles into account. At the end we give some archetypes for implementing your knowledge strategy.
Critical Factors for New Product Developments in SMEs Virtual TeamNader Ale Ebrahim
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are considered as an engine for economic growth all over the world and especially for developing countries. During the past decade, new product development (NPD) has increasingly been recognized as a critical factor in ensuring the continued survival of SMEs. On the other hand, the rapid rate of market and technological changes has accelerated in the past decade, so this turbulent environment requires new methods and techniques to bring successful new products to the marketplace. Virtual team can be a solution to answer the requested demand. However, literature have shown no significant differences between traditional NPD and virtual NPD in general, whereas NPD in SME’s virtual team has not been systematically investigated in developing countries. This paper aims to bridge this gap by first reviewing the NPD and its relationship with virtuality and then identifies the critical factors of NPD in virtual teams. The statistical method was utilized to perform the required analysis of data from the survey. The results were achieved through factor analysis at the perspective of NPD in some Malaysian and Iranian manufacturing firms (N = 191). The 20 new product development factors were grouped into five higher level constructs. It gives valuable insight and guidelines, which hopefully will help managers of firms in developing countries to consider the main factors in NPD.

Study on Benchmarking with Respect to Recruitment ParametersIJMTST Journal
Benchmarking of the recruitment parameters is indeed the process by which, an organization can compare
its recruitment parameters and policies. As the employee is an undividable but the most important part of an
organization, it is the main component in an organizations growth and success. Thus, at certain point in time,
every organization needs to evaluate its recruitment strategies in accordance to hire the skillful and most
productive workforce. Today organizations should measure to confirm whether you are employing effectively
or not, you would end up spending most of time measuring recruiting activities instead of actually recruiting.
Benchmarking of recruitment parameters will help organization how business is doing on the talent
management front.

Implicitly or explicitly all competing businesses employ a strategy to select a mix
of marketing resources. Formulating such competitive strategies fundamentally
involves recognizing relationships between elements of the marketing mix (e.g.,
price and product quality), as well as assessing competitive and market conditions
(i.e., industry structure in the language of economics).

Trends in Talent Management
January 2012
www.sismarketresearch.com Navigate the Global Economytm
SIS International Research
2. Background
SIS International Research conducted a qualitative industry trend study across the United States among
senior HR executives at small, midsize and large companies on the topic of talent management. This market
study was conducted from August-November 2011.
The study’s objectives were:
To better understand customer needs for applicant and employee talent
assessments
To identify the latest HR industry trends that will impact talent
assessments
• Customer trends
• Emerging technologies
• Increasing use of mobile platforms, [e.g., smart phones, tablets,
laptops]
Executive Summary
Companies are increasingly using data mining tools to better predict the relationship between applicant
assessment results and future job “fit” and performance. Off-the-shelf assessments are becoming both more
numerous and more targeted.
Differing Value Propositions
Large Companies
• Pushing assessments earlier in the recruiting process to limit the number of candidates that
need to be reviewed by a live recruiter or hiring manager
• Core value propositions revolve around cost savings [i.e., decreased screening labor,
improved productivity (or other business outcomes)]
Small Companies
• Using assessments to evaluate the quality of candidates
• Core value propositions revolve around culture match (soft skills) and job fit (soft & hard
skills)
“Companies see significant losses due to hiring workers who can’t perform
their assigned job or quit prematurely.”

3. Companies are increasingly providing a high-fidelity, media-based experience to job candidates. Key goals
are to make easier connections with applicants via social media, video, and mobile applications
Companies are looking for useful social media tools that stand out – to generate more referrals and to map
out individual networks. According to a number of observers, no one has found the “killer app” yet.
“Almost all the products I looked at are trying to integrate social
media into recruiting. To me this is mostly hype.”
– Recruiter
Respondents mentioned increasing use of mobile testing, at least for initial applications. The benefits
witnessed were that tests could be given to more candidates, and they can be reached anywhere. Other
benefits cited were an increase in the availability of data on candidates, and test materials becoming cheaper
to create and administer. Respondents considered mobile devices and videos as key media. The goal is to
make easier connections with applicants.
Companies are increasingly requesting for applicant assessments to deliver a demonstrable ROI. For this
reason, assessment tools are being used earlier in the hiring process. HR is less willing to spend money on
people not likely to be hired. The most important trend is the continued refining of assessment tools to be
more predictive of job performance. High volume recruiting produces extensive amounts of data – potential
for use of very sophisticated predictive models. A common priority is to increase the validation between test
scores and job performance.
Respondents largely noted that pricing is becoming increasingly competitive.
“Over the last 10 years, assessments have been getting more and more
commoditized”
– Chief Scientist, acquisition solutions provider
To hiring companies, the value delivered by the
assessments tools is more important than the
price of the technology:
1. Standardized tests
2. Semi-custom tests
3. Custom tests Price
4. Talent Strategy providers – full range of

4. Summary
Today’s Human Resources departments are being pushed in new directions, due to the continued jobless
recovery, the expectations of the emerging Millennials in the workforce, as well as the introduction and
refinement of new technologies. Companies are increasingly moving to online assessments, believing them
to be less costly and time-consuming. In addition, corporate branding is becoming an integral part of the
application experience. As a result, social media platforms are becoming an important tool to attract
applicants.
Mobile platforms are adding to the increasing complexity of attracting and assessing applicants, pushing
many HR professionals to look for new ways to assess applicant suitability for the workplace.
