TABLE
NAPKIN
What is Table
Napkin?
• A rectangular or square piece of cloth
we use at the table for wiping the
mouth and fingers while eating.
09
• It also protects the clothes you are
wearing from food stains, spills and
crumbs.
• Traditionally, napkins are kept to the
left of the place setting, outside the
outermost fork.
• Is usually folded in various designs
and shapes.
What is Serviette?
• Serviette refers to a table napkin. In
other words, both these words have
the same meaning. However, there is
a difference between napkin and
serviette based on their usage.
010
• In the US, serviette is rarely used.
However, in the UK, use of the word
serviette is often thought to be
common or un-posh, whereas napkin
is associated with the upper class.
Canadians use these two words more
or less interchangeably.
What is the Difference
between Napkin and
Serviette?
• The difference between napkin and
serviette actually lies in the usage.
011
• Americans mostly use the word
napkin, whereas British associate
napkin with upper class and serviette
with middle-class or unposh usage.
• Moreover, napkin is the most
commonly used word out of these two
words.

the center.
The Rose Napkin Fold
034
5. Once all of the tips are folded
you are left with a square about

6. Fold the right corner diagonally
towards you – laying it down along
the centerline of the triangle,
making a new tip pointing towards
you. An iron can make this important
fold a whole lot easier.
The Bird Of Paradise Napkin Fold
046
7. Do the same with the left
corner, fold it diagonally toward
you and press it down next to the
previous fold. Now you have a
diamond!
The Bird Of Paradise Napkin Fold
047
8. Fold the two "wings" that you just
made in folds 6 and 7 under so that
you have your original triangle shape
back. Once again an iron can make a
world of difference.
The Bird Of Paradise Napkin Fold
048
9. Fold the triangle in half by
bringing the center seam towards
you and allowing the ends to fall.
The Bird Of Paradise Napkin Fold
049
10. This bird’s almost ready to fly,
but first you must give it some
feathers. While holding the base
firmly to keep your folds together,
pull up the four ‘flaps’ created by
the napkin’s corners.

Editor's Notes

  • #9 Why is table napkin important? How important is it? Why is there need to learn a different table napkin folding?
  • #12 Some people believe that napkins are made of only clothes whereas serviettes are made of paper. This is not true. You can find both paper napkins and cloth napkins. However, most people use cloth napkins for formal dinners, and paper napkins for casual events like cocktail receptions.
  • #13 Nappe and Servi® is an Old French word
  • #14 Don’t let it sit beside your plate. It was given to you for wiping your face when you need to and to protect your lap from spills. Leaving it beside your plate marks you as a slob. Do not ever use this to wipe your nose or face (this should be done away from the table. Ff you were the host of the party you shouldn’t leave a formal dinner during dinner. Also when the host places his napkin on the table, this symbolizes that the meal is over such that it just covers your lap. In polite society, movements at the dinner table tend to be small. WILDLY SHAKING NAPKIN. don’t use the napkin as you would a wash cloth during your morning shower; gently dab at your mouth.
  • #15 5. Should your napkin still be sitting on the table when the food arrives, the server may have to create space to set your plate. 6. Also put the loosely folded napkin to the left of your plate when you’re done eating, never on the plate. 7. It is not tucked into your pants, nor does it belong tucked into your shirt collar. However, if you are in a milieu where that kind of behavior is acceptable, don’t be afraid to go along. For example, diners from Southern Italy (or southern New Jersey) have long known that a bowl of spaghetti topped with marinara sauce can be better enjoyed when you don’t have to worry about the red stuff splattering on your shirt. Many Italian and Italian-American diners therefore tuck the napkin into their collars as a matter of course. Feel free to do the same.
  • #16 When you were given a napkin, USE IT Wait for the host to pick up and unfold If larger, fold it Don’t make ostentatious display unfolding your napkin Don’t wait for the food to be serve Always leave napkin on the left or right side of your plate when leaving the table Put napkin on your lap
  • #17 Dinner – largest – 20-26 Lunch – Smaller – 16-19 Tea – 12 Cocktail – don’t go with your lap – 6-9
