System Monitoring
The System Monitoring application provides an overview of the
current status of technical systems, including their
associated instances, databases and hosts.
System Monitoring is based on automated checks in regular time
intervals in the four categories Availability, Performance,
Exceptions, and Configuration. In each of these categories,
several metrics and corresponding thresholds can be defined per
managed object.
The configuration is based on a template concept. Pre-defined
templates can be used as a starting point to derive own customer
specific templates.
The System Monitoring application provides information about the
current status according to the last measurement of each metric.
In addition, alerts will be created and can be handled via the Alert
Inbox in case thresholds are violated.

Metrics are a set of measurements that quantify results such as performance metrics that quantify the
units performance.
§ A Metric also has a threshold that determines it’s rating or status based on the measured value of the metric.
§ It is an atomic entity in that it does not have other metrics or events that will determine it’s rating.

Template Maintenance - Create Alert
An Alert (ITILv3) in Service Operations is a warning that a threshold has been
reached, something has changed, or a Failure has occurred.
§ An alert is an object that represents the definition of the situation that needs attention
and can be triggered from only one event.
§ The alert object definition has many attributes including the status, category, product,
managed object type and short description.
§ The alert consumer connector raises the alert in case the correlated event has a yellow
or red rating.
§ An alert is assigned to a category.

§ On the Technical Scenarios tab you can create technical scenario of type System Monitoring to
group systems together. When selecting a technical scenario all technical systems of the scenario

no template was assigned before.
2. Change the template assignment if required.

Self Monitoring of the Monitoring and Alerting Infrastructure
The Self-Monitoring has three different aspects.
§ System Monitoring of the SAP Solution Manager System:
To ensure the correct functioning of the MAI and other central functions of SAP Solution Manager, the SAP Solution
Manager system itself must be working without errors and with good performance. To check that this is the case,
use the normal system monitoring functions on the SAP Solution Manager system itself.
§ Monitoring of the MAI and other central functions/components of SAP Solution Manager:
In addition to system monitoring, there are functions/components that display specific metrics, alerts, and logs and
traces for the central infrastructure of SAP Solution Manager.
§ Self-Monitoring of Managed Systems:
To be able to monitor managed systems, the monitoring for these systems needs to be correctly set up, the
associated agents and monitoring functions need to be working correctly, and it must be possible to connect from
the SAP Solution Manager system to the relevant managed system without problems. In the system view, this
information is displayed, grouped by technical systems.

Monitored Technical Components
§ Event Calculation Engine
The Event Calculation Engine uses the reported metric values to
determine the status, events, and alerts of the administered objects on
the basis of configuration settings in the Alerting Directory.
§ Data Provider Connector
The Data Provider Connector is responsible for transferring monitoring
data into the MAI. The required information can be transferred using a
push mechanism or a pull mechanism; various data sources are
supported, such as the local CCMS, NetWeaver Management agents, or
CA Wily Introscope.
§ Alert Consumer Connector
The Alert Consumer Connector is the interface for all infrastructures that
use alert information, such as the Alert Inbox, mail, or third-party
applications. Depending on the relevant configuration settings, the alert
information is transferred using a push mechanism or a pull mechanism.

§ Agent Framework
The Agent Framework is the component for central management of the
diagnostics agents that are installed on your managed systems.
§ Introscope Enterprise
Manager
SAP Active Global Support uses Introscope to analyze causes and to
monitor Java applications. The Enterprise Manager acts as a permanent
repository for the performance values collected by the diagnostics agents.
§ Extractors
Messages and alerts about extractors come from the Extractor
Framework: this is the central infrastructure of SAP Solution Manager for
data collection and data distribution.
§ Self-Diagnosis
You can use the self-diagnosis to monitor components, functions, or
solutions of SAP Solution Manager. For example, different checks are
performed for each function, and, depending on the result of the test, an
alert is displayed, if necessary.
