When I overcame misery, it was easier to change other problematic aspects of my life. I tried changing these aspects before, but I was unsuccessful. I learned that some of these aspects are the symptoms of happiness.

2. My life didn’t start well
My parents had 5 kids in 5 ½ years. Can you
imagine how much attention I received?
I was depressed for 34 years.
I was on many different antidepressants.
I went to several different psychiatrists.
I was an alcoholic.
3. How my life changed
I started talking to a friend. My friend wasn’t a
therapist or didn’t have a lot of insight. Just
saying my thoughts out loud I could identify
“thinking errors.”
4. Some of my thinking errors
I am unlovable. If my parents can’t love me, no
one can.
I will never do anything right.
I will never meet any woman that will like me.
If I have a family, I will be neglectful like dad.
I hated my parents and I hated myself for
hating them.
7. Symptoms of Happiness
Better relationships.
1. Narcissism went away.
2. Had more to talk about then work and bars.
3. Cared more for other people.
4. Had more happiness and confidence,
attracted more people.
8. Symptoms of Happiness
Took better care of myself.
1. I was able to eat healthier. I didn’t need
comfort food.
2. Started working out. Was able to do the “not
so fun” stuff, in order to be happier and
healthier.
3. Lost a lot of weight.
9. Symptoms of Happiness
Wanted more out of life.
1. I wanted to do the many things I haven’t
done or learned.
2. Wanted a better job, not more money, but
better.
3. Wanted more relationships.
4. Became better in the relationships I had.
10. In the same breath,
These are some of the symptoms of happiness,
but they are also causes of happiness.

I read a lot of self help books before this. Many
of them talked about the consequences of
negative self talk.
12. Purpose of this slide show
I think people try to change symptoms of
misery, rather than helping people. Even if
they have good intentions, can you really help
people without getting to know the person and
their environment?
