• Training Needs Assessment 
• Diabetes HES/ QoF data 
• Diabetes Treatment Pathways 
• Refresher training sessions and foundation level training courses 
• Advanced level training course (PITstop) 
• Advanced level training course (PREDICT) 
• Mentorship to support PITstop and PREDICT competencies
Training needs assessment (TNA) 
• To be rolled out early next year. 
• Every GP, Nurse and HCA details to be 
registered onto the system by the end of this 
year. 
• TNA dashboard to be visible centrally to plan 
future training events. 
• Suitable for use during individual appraisals.
Diabetes HES / QoF data 
• Data to be analysed to support and improve 
engagement with practices. 
• E.g. practice level data length of stay, number 
of patients not achieving set HBA1c targets.
Diabetes treatment pathways 
• Insulin pathway 
• Oral hyperglycaemic pathway 
• Blood glucose testing guidance
Refresher training sessions and foundation 
level training courses 
• NPH insulins 
• Oral hyperglycaemics refreshers 
• Access to Birmingham Community Health 
Training via Dr Malik 
• Other courses/ sessions added as per TNA 
• Foundation level course- early next year.
Advanced level training- PITstop 
and PREDICT 
• RCGP accredited 
• Structured training courses 
• Competency based assessments 
• Comprehensive content 
• Why 2? Different ways of learning to suit and 
because of high demand for advance level 
training.
Mentorship 
• Independent diabetes specialist nurse to give 
hands-on support to all students enrolled onto 
the 2 advanced level courses. Mentorship will 
support the competency sign off for both 
courses.

  • 1. GP and Nurse Education Model for Diabetes Type 2 Sumaira Tabassum
  • 2. 7 steps to improved quality • Training Needs Assessment • Diabetes HES/ QoF data • Diabetes Treatment Pathways • Refresher training sessions and foundation level training courses • Advanced level training course (PITstop) • Advanced level training course (PREDICT) • Mentorship to support PITstop and PREDICT competencies
  • 3. Training needs assessment (TNA) • To be rolled out early next year. • Every GP, Nurse and HCA details to be registered onto the system by the end of this year. • TNA dashboard to be visible centrally to plan future training events. • Suitable for use during individual appraisals.
  • 4. Diabetes HES / QoF data • Data to be analysed to support and improve engagement with practices. • E.g. practice level data length of stay, number of patients not achieving set HBA1c targets.
  • 5. Diabetes treatment pathways • Insulin pathway • Oral hyperglycaemic pathway • Blood glucose testing guidance
  • 6. Refresher training sessions and foundation level training courses • NPH insulins • Oral hyperglycaemics refreshers • Access to Birmingham Community Health Training via Dr Malik • Other courses/ sessions added as per TNA • Foundation level course- early next year.
  • 7. Advanced level training- PITstop and PREDICT • RCGP accredited • Structured training courses • Competency based assessments • Comprehensive content • Why 2? Different ways of learning to suit and because of high demand for advance level training.
  • 8. Mentorship • Independent diabetes specialist nurse to give hands-on support to all students enrolled onto the 2 advanced level courses. Mentorship will support the competency sign off for both courses.
