Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan cleanliness campaign on October 2nd, 2014 in New Delhi, cleaning a road himself with a broom. The campaign involved over 3 million government employees and students across India. Modi nominated nine public figures to promote the campaign, who each nominated nine more people. Clean technology is promoted as providing environmental solutions like renewable energy and waste management. While national environmental policy is set by the Ministry, provincial governments translate these guidelines and develop regional plans regarding land use, emissions, and spatial planning to create a healthy environment.
