The presentation highlights the concept of Sustainable Development contemporary issues in environmental policy in the global and Kenya context (strategies, opportunities and implementation).
This document discusses sustainable development. It defines sustainable development as an approach to economic development that does not compromise the environment for future generations. The objectives of sustainable development are economic growth, environmental protection, and social inclusion. Examples of sustainable development include wind and solar energy and green spaces. The importance of sustainable development is that it provides essential human needs, supports agricultural requirements, manages climate change, enables financial stability, and sustains biodiversity. What prevents sustainable development is that sustainable methods are often initially more expensive and there is a lack of general acceptance of the need for sustainable practices.
This document discusses the concept of sustainable development, outlining its history and key topics like the three pillars of economic development, social development, and environmental protection. It explores approaches to achieving sustainability, principles like meeting human needs fairly and efficiently while reducing dependence on non-renewable resources, and the goal of active involvement from all stakeholders in government, business, and civil society to guide policy decisions that secure future generations.
Sustainable development aims to meet present needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own needs. It considers environmental protection, economic growth, and social progress. The UN has established 17 sustainable development goals to be achieved by 2030 related to issues like poverty, hunger, health, education, climate change, and more. Achieving sustainability requires action across multiple levels and sectors of society through principles like reducing pollution, conserving resources, and ensuring fair access to assets.

This presentation discusses key issues relating to climate change, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development. It outlines the historical context and introduces key concepts such as climate change mitigation, adaptation, and sustainable development. The presentation notes challenges like increasing extreme weather events and proposes addressing these challenges through effective policies, international cooperation, promoting sustainable living practices, and accelerating green energy adoption. The goal is to formulate strategies for a sustainable and resilient future.
Sustainable development aims to meet current needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own needs. It considers environmental protection, economic growth, and social progress. The UN has outlined 17 sustainable development goals to be achieved by 2030 related to issues like poverty, hunger, health, education, climate change, and more. Achieving sustainability requires action across multiple levels from individual to global and adopting practices that conserve resources, reduce pollution and ensure sufficient productive assets for the future.
The document discusses the relationship between the environment and sustainable economic development. It defines environment and explains how it is interdependent with development. Sustainable development is defined as meeting present needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own needs. While economic growth benefits standards of living, it has also degraded ecosystems. Maintaining balance requires policy interventions like promoting cleaner technologies, efficient resource use, and international cooperation. Development and environment impact each other, so sustainable development is needed.
Agenda 21 is a comprehensive plan of action to be taken globally, nationally and locally by organizations of the United Nations System, Governments, and Major Groups in every area in which human impacts on the environment.
Agenda 21, the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, and the Statement of principles for the Sustainable Management of Forests were adopted by more than 178 Governments at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 3 to 14 June 1992.
Climate change will significantly impact South Asia through increased poverty, effects on agriculture and food security, reduced water availability, and increased health issues. The proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to address these impacts by focusing on poverty eradication, food security, water and sanitation, energy access, and building climate resilience. However, some argue the goals could more explicitly address natural limits to growth, adaptation, inequality, and governance issues. While integrating climate change across multiple goals is positive, ensuring meaningful commitments and financing remains a challenge.
This chapter calls for collective action to address climate change and promote sustainable development. Former Prime Minister of Norway and chair of the UN Conference on Environment and Development Gro Harlem Brundtland argues that the responsibility to solve the climate crisis rests with both political leaders and citizens as consumers and voters. She references the 1987 report "Our Common Future" which advocated for sustainable development. While progress has been slow, coordinated global efforts and continued public pressure can drive more ambitious climate policies and actions.
This document provides an overview of sustainable development including:
- The concept of sustainable development which meets present needs without compromising future generations.
- The three pillars of sustainability: environmental integrity, social equity, and economic efficiency.
- The 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2015-2030 addressing issues like poverty, hunger, health, education, climate action, and partnerships.
- The principles of a sustainable society including respect for life, improving human life quality, conserving resources and staying within environmental limits.
The document discusses the concepts of development and sustainable development. Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising future generations by balancing social, economic, and environmental considerations. It outlines the history of sustainable development concepts and the UN's sustainable development goals from 2015-2030. The principles of sustainability are also discussed, including reducing dependence on non-renewable resources and meeting human needs fairly and efficiently. Examples of sustainable energy like solar and wind are provided.
The document discusses sustainable development and its importance. It defines sustainable development as meeting present needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own needs. The Brundtland Commission outlined critical objectives for sustainable development policies, including reviving growth and ensuring sustainable resource use. Governments have been challenged to develop their communities sustainably while protecting natural resources and people's welfare. Sustainable development requires integrating environmental concerns into all government actions and decision-making to protect ecosystems long-term.
The document discusses the complex relationship between environmental sustainability and development objectives. It argues that environmental sustainability is essential for reducing poverty and achieving other development goals. While human needs and environmental concerns are sometimes at odds, requiring tradeoffs to be carefully managed, opportunities exist for "win-win" solutions that align both. Achieving environmental sustainability requires balancing human needs with maintaining functioning ecosystems and limiting pollution, which this report provides guidance on.
The document discusses the need to balance environmental sustainability and human development. It argues that environmental protection, conservation of biodiversity, and addressing climate change underpin human well-being and are essential to reducing poverty. However, conservation strategies must also consider people's immediate needs, and development cannot ignore environmental costs. Achieving sustainability requires balancing these factors. The document calls for setting specific, quantifiable environmental targets and integrating sustainability into all development policies and plans at global, national and local levels to make progress toward the UN's Millennium Development Goals.

5. INTRODUCTION
โข The term 'Sustainable Development' first come to
prominence in the World Conservation Strategy
(WCS) in 1980.
โข It achieved a new status with the publication of
two significant report by Brundtland on North and
South, a programmed for survival and common
crisis.
โข Our Common Future (1983) and has gained even
greater attention since the United Nations
Conference on Environment and Development
(UNCED) held in Rio De Janeiro in June 1992.
6. WHAT
IS DEVELOPME
NT?
๏ถ Development is the gradual growth of situation that
becomes more advanced and strong than previous one.
๏ถ Development is intended to bring a positive change for
human being and its surroundings. Development may
take place by bringing about a change in policy, projects
and legislation.
๏ถ Development is a unfolding of human potentials for
meaningful participation in economic, social,
political and cultural process and institutions, so that
people can improve their conditions.
7. Sustainable Development
๏Sustainable Development is development that
meets the needs of the present without
comprising the ability of future generations to
meet their own needs.
๏Gro Harlem Brundtland first introduced the
concept of sustainable development in 1987.
He was then the Prime Minister of Norway and
Chairman of the World Commission on
Environment and Development.
๏Sustainable development is the
organizing principle for meeting human
development goals while simultaneously
sustaining the ability of natural system to provide
the natural resources and ecosystem services
8. WHAT IS
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT?
โข Sustainable development means
development take place without damaging
the environment, and development in the
present should not compromise with the
needs of the future generation.
โข Sustainable development is the
organizing principle for meeting human
development goals while simultaneously
sustaining the ability of natural system to
provide the natural resources and
ecosystem services based upon which the
economy and society depends.
10. EVOLUTION OF
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
๏ถThe landmark event in the evolution of the concept of sustainable
development had been the 1972 Stockholm Conference on the Human
Environment convened by The United Nations, the report of the Worls
Commission on Environment and Development (WCED).
๏ถOur Common Future and the 1992 United Nations Conference on
Environment and Development (UNCED) on Rio Earth Summit as
it is commonly referred to. The main activities between successive
landmark events sought to build on the outcome of the previous event, to
clarify issues and to provide inputs into the preparatory process of the
following events.
11. ๏ถ The UN established the Commission on Sustainable
Development (CSD) in December 1992 to ensure on
effective follow โ up of UNCED and to monitor and
report on the implementation of the Earth Summit
agreements at the local, national, regional and
international levels.
๏ถ A (Rio + 5) Special Session of the General Assembly
held on June 1997, adopted a
comprehensive program for further implementation
of Agenda 21 as well as the work program of
the CSD for 1997 - 2002.
๏ถ The Kyota Protocol adopted in December 1997 and
the Conferences of the Parties (COPs), held over the
years have made some advances relating to
clarification of various aspects of financing and
implementing Sustainable Development globally.

more than just the individual. wind energy can
supplement or even replace the cost of grid
power and therefore may be good investment
and remains a great example of sustainable
