Sara Turner undertook a capstone project to reduce the sorority Chi Omega's use of Styrofoam. In one semester, the sorority used over 40,500 pieces of Styrofoam, averaging 276 pieces per day. Styrofoam takes 500 years to decompose and its production harms the environment. Turner's goals were to inform the sorority of Styrofoam's impacts, eliminate daily Styrofoam cup use, and find affordable alternatives. She convinced the sorority to replace Styrofoam with reusable dishes but had to compromise by allowing Styrofoam on weekends due to cleaning responsibilities.
