Edible Drinking Straws: A Solution For
Aggravating Plastic Pollution
Background
Plastic, depending on the material and structure, can take anywhere from 20 to
500 years to decompose. Plastic straws in particular, take about 200 years to
decompose. Due to increasing use of plastic globally, high levels of micro plastic
are found in rivers and oceans. Micro plastics have entered the food chain, too.
Various studies reported up to 600 particle micro plastics per kilogram of salt, up
to 660 micro plastic fibers per kilogram of honey and up to about 109 micro
plastic fragments per liter of beer. Micro plastics are known endocrine disruptors
and are implicated in numerous health challenges like diabetes, cancer, and
obesity (Kuna and Sreedhar, 2019).
Many companies, organizations, and individuals have contributed in recent
years to take plastic pollution seriously. Edible cutlery, edible water bottles, eco
bags, and steel straws are just a few of the numerous products that have been
developed to help people avoid using single-use plastic. Plastic straws are
gradually being phased out in favor of more ecologically friendly alternatives.
Hence, the researchers also want to do their part in this movement.
Based on the result, the edible straw, which is made from
flour, egg, and flavorings had successfully passed the tests
that the researchers have conducted. It came out long lasting
than those typical edible straws in the market. The
researchers’ Edible Drinking Straw, which can be alternative
to the plastic ones, is rated as excellent in the durability test
and rated as good or 2.34 in the bending test. Overall, the
product achieved the desired rating for the study. The
product proved that it can be a great substitute or a better
option in choosing straws.
Objectives
1. To create an eco-friendly and
biodegradable alternative to plastic
straws.
2. Have a more durable and long
lasting quality than its edible
counterparts.
3. To minimize the effect of the
aggravating plastic pollution.
Results and Discussions
P1
• Expected Durability of the Edible Straw
Result
• After having different results from the
experiments, we produced 3 different
qualities. After 3 trials we succeeded in
making a straw that can last for 2hours.
Results and Discussion
P2
• The Process/ Methods used to
make edible straw
Result
• After trying different methods, we
were able to find the best way to
make efficient results, which
made our product last longer and
taste better.
Results and Discussion
Prob 3
• What ingredients were
needed to make the product?
Finds
• Egg, flour, condensed milk, food color,
sugar were used to improve the
consistency and durability of the
product, also helps it in maintaining its
form.
Conclusion
1. The product addresses the study’s overall goal. As a
consequence, the facts reported in this study aid in
drawing inferences.
2. The researcher’s edible straw which can be alternative to
the plastic ones is rated as excellent in the durability test
and rated as good or 2.34 in the bending test.
3. Overall, the product achieved the desired rating for the study. The
product proved that it can be a great substitute or a better option
in choosing straws. Even so, it can be improved by future
researchers.
Recommendations
1. The basis of the findings and the
conclusion formulated in the research
study, the following recommendation
is proposed:
1. To the community. The researchers
recommend the edible straw to avoid
environmental damage. These edible
straws are flavored and are designed
for the sustainability of the future and
reduce the use of plastic straws.
Recommendations
To the people with disabilities and special
needs. The researchers recommend the PWD's
who needed straws to make edible straws as
alternative to plastic straws.
To the milk tea shop owners. The researchers
encourage the milk tea shops owner to use
edible straw as their default straw as it may
become beneficial to them and to the
environment.
Recommendations
To iced coffee lovers. The researchers encourage
the ice coffee lovers to take the first step in an eco-
friendly lifestyle. The first step will be using an
alternative to plastic straws.
To the Students. The researchers encourage the
students to make a move and switch to more eco-
friendly products like the researcher's edible straw.
To the School. The researchers recommend the
school, specifically the school canteen, to phase out
or not, give the students the option for a more eco-
friendly edible straw.
Recommendations
To Future Researchers. The future researchers
are encourage to work harder and think harder
as this study can be their basis in gaining
insights:
Researchers also advise them to enhance the
product's characteristics.
