Sushi maki-zushi can be made with a variety of fillings wrapped in nori seaweed. Short-grained rice is seasoned with rice vinegar and filled with proteins and vegetables of choice. The rice is placed on nori sheets and rolled tightly with a bamboo mat to form cylindrical maki rolls. Common fillings include avocado, cucumber, cooked shrimp, smoked salmon, and canned tuna. Finished maki rolls are served with soy sauce and pickled ginger.
