Ancient Greeks invented the first construction cranes in the 6th century BC to lift heavy loads for building tall structures. The Romans later developed cranes further and were able to lift much heavier stones using multiple pulleys, capstans, and coordination between work groups. In medieval times, tread wheel cranes reemerged to load and unload ships. Modern cranes now offer far greater lifting capabilities than previous technologies.
