read the bulletin regularly and use it to inform colleagues of meetings and other school news.
Remembering Susan
Susan Sullivan earned a Master’s degree in early childhood education in 1993 from Wheelock College, 26
years after earning a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Trinity University in San Antonio,
Texas. During those intervening years, Susan and her husband raised a beautiful family of sons, with whom
we now grieve. Susan began her career in Wellesley as a teaching assistant at the Schofield School in
1994. She was appointed in 1997 to be a special educator at the Hunnewell School, where she served for
twelve years. Her sons married, and Susan recently became a very happy grandmother.
As a special educator, Susan worked with hundreds of students and their teachers on an individual basis.
Working with Susan was a personally intimate and enriching experience, so much so that when teachers
were not collaborating with Susan because they were not teaching students on her caseload, they found
themselves missing her and longing for the next opportunity to work with her. Susan was a special person
who filled in the cracks as she found them and made everything, including people, better and more whole.
Generous of heart and soul, Susan achieved this with subtle grace.
Susan was diagnosed with cancer only last September, but the diagnosis brought with it a realization that
the cancer must have been with her for some time, undetected. In her own special way, Susan reassured
us and said often, “Don't you worry about me; I'll be back.” And we believed her. We thought she, and we,
had more time and that she would be back. The years that Susan spent in the Wellesley Public Schools have
been very good years, and those of us who had the opportunity to know her are fortunate and much the
better for it.
