The Superintendent’s Bulletin is posted weekly on Fridays on our website. It provides timely, relevant
information about meetings, professional development opportunities, curriculum and program development,
grant awards, and school committee news. The bulletin is also the official vehicle for job postings. Please
read the bulletin regularly and use it to inform colleagues of meetings and other school news.

Dear Colleagues,
I can hardly believe 2009 is drawing to an end! Didn't we only just observe the inauguration of President
Barack Obama?
We began the year with a projected shortfall between the proposed level service FY10 budget and advisory
guideline. Working through the spring we were able to achieve a level service budget meeting the advisory
guideline only to lose circuit breaker funding after creating the current FY10 deficit. We end the year again this
time with a projected shortfall between the proposed level service FY11 budget and advisory guideline. Some of
this shortfall may be mitigated by stimulus funds but not all of it. This will be something to resolve in the early
months of 2010.
H1N1 arrived in the spring of 2009. It has required tremendous flexibility on our part, working with the Health
Department, to address the needs of the community as information fluctuated from month to month regarding the
flu and supplies of vaccine. H1N1 has understandably provoked anxiety in our community. But I am happy to say
as we close this year I feel our community of parents, teachers, and administrators have worked well with one
another to create the best outcome given what has been an ever changing situation.
Spring of 2009 also marked approval of the final permit required before construction of the new high school
could begin. That process may have been as challenging and taxing as it was to negotiate the $40 million dollar
contribution from the state toward the cost of the project. So far, we have seen our old parking lot graded, a large
hole dug and almost all of the pilings have gone into the ground. So far, the work has been below the surface,
The next stage will be construction of the steel frame so we will finally see the beginnings of the vertical structure.
This school year has also been marked by sad goodbyes, beginning with Cheryl Allison in September and the
service for Susan Sullivan at Hunnewell School just yesterday afternoon. I am reminded that through any year
there are weddings, graduations and any number of new babies to celebrate. At the same time, there are always
losses. Sometimes marriages end. Sometimes we lose dear friends or beloved family members. Sometimes
something happens that just makes our day to day harder. I always bear that in mind when I write to
acknowledge all the good and important work you do despite whatever may be happening in your lives, happy or
sad, good or bad. Because we work with and for the benefit of children, we tend to face our days with our game
faces on no matter what. We have a longer than usual break scheduled this year. I hope you all take advantage
of the time to rest and replenish yourselves.
