Wong Bulletin #25 Superintendent of Schools March 18, 2011 The Superintendent’s Bulletin is posted weekly on Fridays on our website. It provides timely, relevant information about meetings, professional development opportunities, curriculum and program development, grant awards, and School Committee news. The bulletin is also the official vehicle for job postings. Please read the bulletin regularly and use it to inform colleagues of meetings and other school news., Dear Colleagues, With a little over a week left before Annual Town Meeting, I am writing to provide you an update on the FY12 Budget process. All Town departments have been working to lower the collective Town-wide budget deficit projected for FY12. Currently, the projected deficit is calculated to be $2,064,000. Undeniably, a large portion of the deficit is due to the School Department’s budget. The Board of Selectmen has already begun to talk about a possible tax override for FY13, but not for FY12. This means that for FY12, the deficit can only be resolved by dipping further into the Town’s free cash or by reductions in the projected budgets. The Town’s Advisory Committee voted on March 9 to support an allocation of up to $1,000,000 out of free cash to cover a portion of the deficit. This leaves $1,064,000 of the deficit uncovered. All Town departments have been asked to review budgets already submitted for possible further reductions. I was asked by the School Committee to present ideas for further reductions to our projected FY12 Budget. I presented the following ideas at a School Committee meeting held on March 15. All of the ideas focused on non-programmatic reductions: • Increase our assumption for circuit breaker reimbursement from the current 40% • Begin the all-school facilities study in FY12 but delay completion until FY13 • Review FY12 Cash Capital Budget for additional reductions • Review salary adjustments/turnover assumptions for FY12 • Review possibility of conversion from oil to gas at the Middle School • Review projections for utility costs • Charge against a utility credit from the Municipal Light Plant • Increase efforts to collect on outstanding food service debt By Tuesday evening, I will be able to provide the costs associated with each of the items listed above. At its meeting on March 22, School Committee will likely vote on further reductions to the projected school budgets based on these ideas in preparation for Town Meeting, which begins on March 28.

Share your Expertise with your Colleagues Teach a course this summer or in 2011-12 Do you have expertise in the area of Classroom Management, Differentiated Instruction, Looking at Student Work, or a specific content area? Consider sharing your knowledge by teaching a course. Proposals are currently being accepted. The rate of pay for one instructor is $60 per course hour or $100 per course hour if the course is approved for graduate credit through an accredited institution. The rate of pay is adjusted for multiple instructors. Please contact for a proposal form and assistance with graduate approval. Deadline: March 25, 2011Criteria for Graduate Credit Approval (Framingham State College)Instructors must have a minimum of a masters degree and two years of work experience in the area they will bepresenting. Potential Instructors must submit: A current resume Copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts Two current letters of recommendation A complete, detailed course syllabusOne graduate credit is awarded for a minimum of twelve hours of classroom instruction. A maximum of 3 creditswill be awarded to new courses. The description should be clear and brief. Course objectives: clearly state what the student is expected to gain upon completion of the course. Course expectations: clearly state your expectations regarding attendance, class participation, missed exams, and assignment due dates. Course content/outline: schedule of the topics that will be covered, homework assignments and due dates. Course text and materials: required course text(s) with full bibliographic citation(s), and other readings required or suggested for the course. Course Requirements: descriptions of papers, projects, exams, assignments, and any other requirements to successfully complete the course. Grading Criteria-be very specific. There are two funding sources available, one thatrequires projects to be completed by June 30, 2011 and the other that will fund projects that take placebeginning July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012.C&I compensation is granted for curriculum development projects or task force members to work on building-basedor system wide initiatives. The Wellesley Middle School group, Junior Moving Company directed by Lauren Schneider,will also return for a ninth season performance, and the WMS Step Squad will join the program for its secondyear. In addition, Bright Pearl Dance Company, one of Boston’s premiere Chinese Dance groups under thedirection of Na Zhou, will present works of authentic Chinese dance.Members of the Wellesley High School Moving Company will be performing a dance piece choreographed bycompany director, Janet Sozio: Singin’ and Dancin’ a funky twist on an old classic.
