An economics lecturer was scheduled to give a presentation at a seminar using PowerPoint. During a trial run, the presentation worked fine. However, on the day of the seminar, the presentation would not start up, much to the lecturer's horror in front of administrators and guests. It was discovered that the new laptop had a trial version of Microsoft Office that was causing the issue. The seminar had to continue without the planned presentation. Since installing Open Office, subsequent presentations have gone smoothly, but the lecturer still feels uneasy about the initial failed presentation that colleagues occasionally remind them of.

Branding in the digital age:You're Spending your money in All the Wrong placesSameer mathur
The document discusses how the consumer decision journey has changed from a funnel model to a four stage iterative model of consider, evaluate, buy, and enjoy/advocate. It notes that traditionally 70-90% of marketing budgets went to advertising at the consider and buy stages, but that consumers now research across multiple sources during the evaluate stage. The new roles for marketing are described as an orchestrator of the consumer journey, publisher and manager of content, and leader in gathering marketplace intelligence.

Competing Against Free - An Indian PerspectiveSameer mathur
The document discusses strategies for competing against free products. It analyzes the threat level posed by a new free competitor based on their growth rate and the rate at which the existing company loses customers. Depending on the threat level, the appropriate strategies are to rapidly launch a free product, change the business model, or monitor the situation. Common strategies for monetizing free products are upselling premium versions, cross-selling other products, charging third parties, and bundling. The document then discusses WhatsApp's success in India by being free and how it disrupted telecom companies' SMS revenue. It proposes solutions for telecom companies like Airtel to develop their own instant messaging app that is integrated with SMS and allows offline messaging
This document provides tips and strategies for effectively delivering presentations. It discusses that presentation skills are important for the real world and can provide an unfair advantage. It recommends not reading slides verbatim but instead using them as a guide. The presentation should focus on logic but also engage the audience in an interactive way. The presenter is the most important part of the presentation, not the PowerPoint slides themselves. The document then covers several marketing topics like setting product strategies, designing and managing services, and case studies on branding yoga and capitalizing on polarization for certain brands.
The document discusses strategies for polarizing brands based on a Harvard business study. It finds that some brands benefit from having both strong lovers and haters of the brand. This polarization can boost sales. The document outlines several strategies brands use to capitalize on polarization, including placating haters to reduce their numbers, poking haters to generate publicity, and amplifying polarizing attributes to energize existing fans. It provides examples of brands like Betty Crocker, Ryanair, and Marmite that have successfully used polarization to their advantage.

Case Analysis for "MedNet.com confronts 'Click-Through' Competition" by Chandra Has Dondapati for an internship under Professor Sameer Marthur (www.iiminternship.com)
Steinway & Sons, a leading manufacturer of high-quality grand pianos established in 1853, was purchased in 1995 by Dana Messina and Kyle Kirkland. They faced questions about whether to continue Steinway's niche strategy of crafting high-end pianos or pursue a bolder plan like a mid-priced line. While Steinway dominated the US market, holding 58% domestic share, the global piano industry was in decline and facing increased competition from Asian manufacturers like Yamaha and Kawai. Messina and Kirkland weighed options to maintain Steinway's brand and quality while more aggressively marketing and expanding into new markets like Asia.

The document discusses the commercialization and branding of yoga in Western cultures. It provides background on the Hindu American Foundation (HAF), an advocacy group concerned that yoga is being marketed without acknowledgement of its Hindu roots. The document also profiles two famous yoga gurus: Bikram Choudhary, who aggressively copyrighted his yoga style, and Tara Stiles, who teaches a more secular form of yoga. HAF has launched a campaign called "Take Back Yoga" to educate people about yoga's origins in Hinduism.
This document discusses the commercialization of yoga in modern times. It provides background on the origins and purpose of yoga in ancient India, focusing on spiritual union and transcending the physical. In modern times, yoga has evolved in various physical and meditative styles. The document examines the approaches of two yoga brands, Bikram and Tara Stiles, and issues with proprietary claims. Both sides of the argument are presented, with some seeing commercialization as inappropriate given yoga's religious roots, while others view it as expanding accessibility. A middle path is suggested of embracing opportunities while upholding authentic values.

Why Psychological Safety Matters for Software Teams - ACE 2024 - Ben Linders.pdfBen Linders
Psychological safety in teams is important; team members must feel safe and able to communicate and collaborate effectively to deliver value. It’s also necessary to build long-lasting teams since things will happen and relationships will be strained.
But, how safe is a team? How can we determine if there are any factors that make the team unsafe or have an impact on the team’s culture?
In this mini-workshop, we’ll play games for psychological safety and team culture utilizing a deck of coaching cards, The Psychological Safety Cards. We will learn how to use gamification to gain a better understanding of what’s going on in teams. Individuals share what they have learned from working in teams, what has impacted the team’s safety and culture, and what has led to positive change.
Different game formats will be played in groups in parallel. Examples are an ice-breaker to get people talking about psychological safety, a constellation where people take positions about aspects of psychological safety in their team or organization, and collaborative card games where people work together to create an environment that fosters psychological safety.

Suzanne Lagerweij - Influence Without Power - Why Empathy is Your Best Friend...Suzanne Lagerweij
This is a workshop about communication and collaboration. We will experience how we can analyze the reasons for resistance to change (exercise 1) and practice how to improve our conversation style and be more in control and effective in the way we communicate (exercise 2).
This session will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
Abstract:
Let’s talk about powerful conversations! We all know how to lead a constructive conversation, right? Then why is it so difficult to have those conversations with people at work, especially those in powerful positions that show resistance to change?
Learning to control and direct conversations takes understanding and practice.
We can combine our innate empathy with our analytical skills to gain a deeper understanding of complex situations at work. Join this session to learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and how to improve our agile conversations in order to be more influential without power. We will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
In the session you will experience how preparing and reflecting on your conversation can help you be more influential at work. You will learn how to communicate more effectively with the people needed to achieve positive change. You will leave with a self-revised version of a difficult conversation and a practical model to use when you get back to work.
Come learn more on how to become a real influencer!
