This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

1. PYC meeting will be held today/tomorrow after the 9.30 am mass.
2. The World Day of the sick will be celebrated today/tomorrow. We pray for the sick and the homebound of our
parish that they may experience the Lords’ presence even in the midst of their sufferings.
3. The Bible Sunday will be celebrated today/tomorrow.
4. The February month Eco Kids meeting will be held today/tomorrow. As already announced, the activity for
today’s meeting will be to plan out, and start practices for action song - Chodo Plastic Thaili in preparation for
eco kids rally of 4thMarch. Further details are already sent on GEM parish WhatsApp group.
5. Special prayer and blessing for students who will be appearing for their SCC and HSC board exams will be held
tomorrow, Monday 12thFebruary at the evening mass.
6. We begin the season ofLent from coming Wednesday, 14th February. On Ash Wednesday, a day offasting and
abstinence, there will be 3 masses – morning at 6.30 and evening at 6.30 in Konkani and 7.15 in English.
Blessed ashes will be applied during all the Masses. For common practice of Penance in the archdiocese of
Bombay, please refer to the circular of Cardinal Oswald Gracias in the latest issue of the Examiner.
7. During the season of Lent, Stations of the Cross will be held on Friday at 6.15 in Konkani and Saturday at 6.15
in English.
8. The monthly prayer service for the month of February will be held on coming Saturday February 17th after the
evening mass. This will be a Gospel Rock session. Please attend in large numbers.
9. The Bible quest29 in the book ofProverbs chapters 11 to 20 will be held on the following Sunday, 25 February.
You have 15 days to prepare.
10. Those families who have not received your community fund status letters for 2017, please contact your PPC
members. This letter also has an enlistment form. If you are interested to join any of the parish groups, you may
tick the respective group and handover the slip to your PPC members.
11. Diocesan youth centre is organising various summer camps. See notice board for further details.
12. The International Women’s Day will be held on Sunday, March 4th at Canossa school hall, Mahim. For
registration details refer to the poster on the notice board.
13. A Lenten Konkani retreat preached by Fr Francis Fernandes, SVD will be held on 10/11th March. Further details
will be announced later
14. The next Made in Heaven get-together for eligibles looking out for marriage proposals will be held on Sunday,
March 11. As many eligibles from other parishes are expected to attend this programme, the boys and girls
from our parish looking out for marriage proposals are invited to make use of this opportunity. Register your
names in the parish office.
15. (not for this week) Priests sisters visitation on coming Wednesday, 7th February is SCC 18. Your PPC member
will give you further details.
16. Those who had given advertisement/donation for school golden jubilee can collect receipt and souvenir copy
from the school office.
17. Last Sunday collections amounted to Rs . Thank you for your generosity.
