Subhash Chandra Bose was arrested for anti-British activities in India in 1940. He escaped house arrest and fled to Berlin to seek help from Hitler in gaining India's independence. In 1942, Bose formed the Indian National Army (INA) with the help of the Japanese as they occupied British colonies in Southeast Asia. The INA aimed to liberate India from British rule and was initially successful in occupying several regions. However, when the Japanese forces withdrew support and surrendered in 1945 after the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the INA lost its momentum and Bose was believed to have died in a plane crash in Taiwan.
