Supplier selection is one of the most important functions of a purchasing department. Since by deciding the best supplier, companies can save material costs and increase competitive advantage. However this decision becomes complicated in case of multiple suppliers, multiple conflicting criteria, and imprecise parameters. In addition the uncertainty and vagueness of the experts’ opinion is the prominent characteristic of the problem. Therefore an extensively used multi criteria decision making tool Fuzzy AHP can be utilized as an approach for supplier selection problem. This paper reveals the application of Fuzzy AHP in a gear motor company determining the best supplier with respect to selected criteria. The contribution of this study is not only the application of the Fuzzy AHP methodology for supplier selection problem, but also releasing a comprehensive literature review of multi criteria decision making problems. In addition by stating the steps of Fuzzy AHP clearly and numerically, this study can be a guide of the methodology to be implemented to other multiple criteria decision making problems.

When to Ask Participants to Think Aloud: A Comparative Study of Concurrent an...CSCJournals
This paper presents the results of a study that compared two think-aloud usability testing methods: the concurrent think-aloud and the retrospective think-aloud methods. Data from task performance, testing experience, and usability problems were collected from 30 participants equally distributed between the two think-aloud conditions. The results suggest that while the thinking aloud method had no impact on task performance and testing experience, participants using the concurrent think-aloud method reported a larger number of problems with the test interface than participants using the retrospective think-aloud method. These findings suggest a reason for preferring the concurrent think-aloud method to the retrospective one.

The result of our system provides much better recommendations to users because it enables the users to understand the relation between their emotional states and the recommended movies.
A Study of Neural Network Learning-Based Recommender Systemtheijes
A recommender system sorts and recommends the information which meets personal preferences among a huge amount of data provided by e-commerce. In particular, collaborative filtering (CF) is the most widely used technique in these recommendation systems. This method finds neighboring users who have similar preferences with particular users and recommends the items preferred by the former. This study proposes a neural network learning model as a new technique to find neighboring users using the collaborative filtering method. This kind of neural network learning model takes care of a sparseness problem during the analysis stage among those related with target users. The proposed method was tested with MovieLens data sets, and the results showed that precision improved by 6.7%.

Objective
To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the equivalence between electronic and paper administration of patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) in studies conducted subsequent to those included in Gwaltney et al’s 2008 review.
Methods
A systematic literature review of PROM equivalence studies conducted between 2007 and 2013 identified 1,997 records from which 72 studies met pre-defined inclusion/exclusion criteria. PRO data from each study were extracted, in terms of both correlation coefficients (ICCs, Spearman and Pearson correlations, Kappa statistics) and mean differences (standardized by the standard deviation, SD, and the response scale range). Pooled estimates of correlation and mean difference were estimated. The modifying effects of mode of administration, year of publication, study design, time interval between administrations, mean age of participants and publication type were examined.
Classification Scoring for Cleaning Inconsistent Survey DataCSCJournals
Data engineers are often asked to detect and resolve inconsistencies within data sets. For some data sources with problems, there is no option to ask for corrections or updates, and the processing steps must do their best with the values in hand. Such circumstances arise in processing survey data, in constructing knowledge bases or data warehouses [1] and in using some public or open data sets.
The goal of data cleaning, sometimes called data editing or integrity checking, is to improve the accuracy of each data record and by extension the quality of the data set as a whole. Generally, this is accomplished through deterministic processes that recode specific data points according to static rules based entirely on data from within the individual record. This traditional method works well for many purposes. However, when high levels of inconsistency exist within an individual respondent's data, classification scoring may provide better results.
Classification scoring is a two-stage process that makes use of information from more than the individual data record. In the first stage, population data is used to define a model, and in the second stage the model is applied to the individual record. The author and colleagues turned to a classification scoring method to resolve inconsistencies in a key value from a recent health survey. Drawing records from a pool of about 11,000 survey respondents for use in training, we defined a model and used it to classify the vital status of the survey subject, since in the case of proxy surveys, the subject of the study may be a different person from the respondent. The scoring model was tested on the next several months' receipts and then applied on a flow basis during the remainder of data collection to the scanned and interpreted forms for a total of 18,841 unique survey subjects. Classification results were confirmed through external means to further validate the approach. This paper provides methodology and algorithmic details and suggests when this type of cleaning process may be useful.
Content-based and collaborative filtering methods are the most successful solutions in recommender
systems. Content-based method is based on item’s attributes. This method checks the features of user's
favourite items and then proposes the items which have the most similar characteristics with those items.
Collaborative filtering method is based on the determination of similar items or similar users, which are
called item-based and user-based collaborative filtering, respectively. In this paper we propose a hybrid
method that integrates collaborative filtering and content-based methods. The proposed method can be
viewed as user-based Collaborative filtering technique. However to find users with similar taste with active
user, we used content features of the item under investigation to put more emphasis on user’s rating for
similar items. In other words two users are similar if their ratings are similar on items that have similar
context. This is achieved by assigning a weight to each rating when calculating the similarity of two
users. We used movielens data set to access the performance of the proposed method in comparison with
basic user-based collaborative filtering and other popular methods.

FHCC: A SOFT HIERARCHICAL CLUSTERING APPROACH FOR COLLABORATIVE FILTERING REC...IJDKP
Recommendation becomes a mainstream feature in nowadays e-commerce because of its significant
contributions in promoting revenue and customer satisfaction. Given hundreds of millions of user activity
logs and product items, accurate and efficient recommendation is a challenging computational task. This
paper introduces a new soft hierarchical clustering algorithm - Fuzzy Hierarchical Co-clustering (FHCC)
algorithm, and applies this algorithm to detect user-product joint groups from users’ behavior data for
collaborative filtering recommendation. Via FHCC, complex relations among different data sources can be
analyzed and understood comprehensively. Besides, FHCC is able to adapt to different types of
applications according to the accessibility of data sources by carefully adjust the weights of different data
sources. Experimental evaluations are performed on a benchmark rating dataset to extract user-product
co-clusters. The results show that our proposed approach provide more meaningful recommendation
results, and outperforms existing item-based and user-based collaborative filtering recommendations in
terms of accuracy and ranked position.

SIMILARITY MEASURES FOR RECOMMENDER SYSTEMS: A COMPARATIVE STUDYJournal For Research
Recommender Systems have the ability to guide the users in a personalized way to interesting items in a large space of possible options. They have fundamental applications in e-commerce and information retrieval, providing suggestion that prune large information spaces so that users are directed towards those items that best meets the needs and preferences. A variety of approaches have been proposed but collaborative filtering has been the most popular and widely used which makes use of various similarity measures to calculate the similarity. Collaborative Filtering takes the user feedback in the form of ratings in an application area and uses it to find similarities and differences between user profiles to generate recommendations. Collaborative Filtering makes use of various similarity measures to calculate the similarity or difference between the users. This paper provides an overview on few important similarity measures that are currently being used. Different similarity measures provide different results against same input parameters. So, to understand how various similarity measures behave when they are put in different contexts but with same input, few observations are made. This paper also provides a comparison graph to help understand the results of different similarity measures.

· Delivery speed —the amount of time it takes to deliver the product once an order is confirmed
· Price level —the perceived level of price charged by PLE
· Price flexibility —the perceived willingness of PLE representatives to negotiate price on all types of purchases
· Manufacturing image —the overall image of the manufacturer
· Overall service —the overall level of service necessary for maintaining a satisfactory relationship between PLE and the purchaser
· Sales force image —the overall image of the PLE’s sales force
· Product quality —perceived level of quality
Responses to these seven variables were obtained using a graphic rating scale, where a 10-centimeter line was drawn between endpoints labeled “poor” and “excellent.” Respondents indicated their perceptions using a mark on the line, which was measured from the left endpoint. The result was a scale from 0 to 10 rounded to one decimal place.
Two measures were obtained that reflected the outcomes of the respondent’s purchase relationships with PLE:
· Usage level —how much of the firm’s total product is purchased from PLE, measured on a 100-point scale, ranging from 0% to 100%
· Satisfaction level —how satisfied the purchaser is with past purchases from PLE, measured on the same graphic rating scale as perceptions 1 through 7
The data also include four characteristics of the responding firms:
· Size of firm —size relative to others in this market (0=small;1=large)(0=small;1=large)
· Purchasing structure —the purchasing method used in a particular company (1=centralized procurement,0=dec ...

of marketing resources. Formulating such competitive strategies fundamentally
involves recognizing relationships between elements of the marketing mix (e.g.,
price and product quality), as well as assessing competitive and market conditions
(i.e., industry structure in the language of economics).

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the best method of analysis to deploy to understand how
consumers develop preferences for products or services using combination of different attributes.
After conducting a detailed literature review, it was proven that conjoint analysis is the best
method to associate for the type of research needed to be carry-out. This study take an in-depth
look in to the conjoint analysis method to understand how it use to achieve the intended results
3. 3
Introduction
Deciding which type of analysis is the most suited for the research study is a crucial decision any
researcher have to think long and hard. It is an important part of research study. Inaccurate data
collection and analysis would lead to an inaccurate results. There are number of ways to design
and conduct analysis and ensuring the right method is chosen is utmost important.(Bryman 2003)
In order to conduct a research on customer preferences towards different products and services,
researcher needs to be sure about the type of data collection and analysis method best suited.
This study will be focusing on literature reviews on data collection and analysis methods and
how those are used to achieve the intended results.
4. 4
Main body
Various scholars have written extensively about the various sampling strategies, data analysis
methods and how to test hypothesis or statistical tests over the years.
Brief literature review
Widely accepted description of scientific research is systematic, controlled, empirical, and
critical investigation of natural phenomena guided by theory and hypotheses about the presumed
relations among such phenomena. (Kerlinger, 1986)
This paper is closely looking at the best possible research strategy to capture the consumers’
perspective on product or services. There are several types of data collection methods to get the
consumers view and primarily those can be divided in to two categories. (Bryman 2003)
1. Qualitative data collection methods
2. Quantitative data collection methods
Qualitative methods include questionnaires with open ended questions, in-depth interviews and
observations. Quantitative methods includes, questionnaires with open ended questions, clinical
trials, collecting data from management information systems.
5. 5
Figure 1 (Ahamadi 2006)
Figure one illustrate the sampling breakdown of a study. Researcher has to ask series of
questions to determine who should be in the study, how to approach them and what percentage
of population should participate to the study to make the outcome is reliable and valid
Mainly there are two types of sampling.
Probability sampling
Non-probability sampling
Once the sample is chosen and data collection is completes, it would be the time for data
analysis. In essence analysis is a process deployed to transform, remodel and revise collected
information in order to arrive at a certain conclusions.
In above paragraphs we have touched on the importance of selecting correct sampling strategy
and analysis method. For the study of consumer preferences, best method is conjoint analysis
Conjoint Analysis
6. 6
Conjoint analysis is a popular marketing research technique. It is a great tool to explore how
people make decisions when it comes to taking decisions. It involves presenting participants with
choices and then analyzing what were the drivers of the choices. Using conjoint analysis,
manufacturers or services can find out whether they should be adding more features to the
products, what the consumers think about the pricing, practicality of the product and so on.
Every customer making choices between products and services is faced with trade-offs. They
have to decide which attributes are more important than others. For an example, is price is
important than quality or easy access better than excellent customer service. (Liew 2013)
Graph 1 (Rao 2014)
Graph 1 demonstrate how the conjoint analysis aim to find the optimum positioning between low
price – low quality and high price – high quality in terms of price and feature by quantifying the
trade-offs and compromises customers take in decision making.
Figure 2 shows the conjoint analysis process flow. At the stage 1 identifying the research
problem and stage 2 is deciding the attributes needed to be tested. On the stage 3 researcher
7. 7
needs to decide on the methodology. Stage 4 to 6 are collecting data, conducting the analysis and
interpreting the data. Once data interpretation is done it is important to validate the data before
applying the results to the product or services.
Figure 2 (Orme 2009)
There are mainly 3 types of conjoint analysis. Those are,
1. Traditional conjoint
2. Adaptive conjoint analysis
3. Choice based conjoint analysis
There are three main parts involved in conjoint analysis design. First task is to break down
product or services in to component attributes and levels. Then the decision of what is the best
way to present options to customers combined with the decision of which method should be used
to find out which product profiles are most preferred.
8. 8
Conclusion
In summery it is clear that conjoint analysis help customers to pinpoint why they prefer certain
products and services over their competitors. It has the tools that allows a subset of the possible
combinations of product features to be used to determine the relative importance of the each
feature in the purchasing decision. Hence in the research topic of which analysis is the best
equipped to determine consumer preferences towards products and services, it is clear conjoint
analysis is the best option.
