This document discusses strategies for persisting context data in FIWARE. It explains that context brokers do not offer inherent data persistence and describes FIWARE components that can be used instead, such as Cygnus and Draco. Cygnus uses Apache Flume to persist data to databases, while Draco uses Apache NIFI. Both support sinks to databases. The document also discusses writing custom persistence code and considering data volumes, retention, scaling, and privacy when architecting solutions.

DCEU 18: Use Cases and Practical Solutions for Docker Container Storage on Sw...Docker, Inc.
Mark Church - Product Manager, Docker
Don Stewart - Solutions Architect, Docker
Persistent storage has quickly advanced from something considered incompatible with containers to a mature set of solutions and patterns that have been thoroughly adopted by the industry. We’ll define the persistent characteristics of different use-cases and map these to some of the many solutions that exist for container storage. From this talk you’ll learn about the storage options available to users on Swarm, Kubernetes, on-premises, cloud, and how they work and compare to each other. You’ll also learn how to characterize different persistent application requirements and the solutions best for suited for them.
Applications need data, but the legacy approach of n-tiered application architecture doesn’t solve for today’s challenges. Developers aren’t empowered to build and iterate their code quickly without lengthy review processes from other teams. New data sources cannot be quickly adopted into application development cycles, and developers are not able to control their own requirements when it comes to data platforms.
Part of the challenge here is the existing relationship between two groups: developers and DBAs. Developers are trying to go faster, automating build/test/release cycles with CI/CD, and thrive on the autonomy provided by microservices architectures. DBAs are stewards of data protection, governance, and security. Both of these groups are critically important to running data platforms, but many organizations deal with high friction between these teams. As a result, applications get to market more slowly, and it takes longer for customers to see value.
What if we changed the orientation between developers and DBAs? What if developers consumed data products from data teams? In this session, Pivotal’s Dormain Drewitz and Solstice’s Mike Koleno will speak about:
- Product mindset and how balanced teams can reduce internal friction
- Creating data as a product to align with cloud-native application architectures, like microservices and serverless
- Getting started bringing lean principles into your data organization
- Balancing data usability with data protection, governance, and security

Webinar: Enterprise Trends for Database-as-a-ServiceMongoDB
Two complementary trends are particularly strong in enterprise IT today: MongoDB itself, and the movement of infrastructure, platform, and software to as-a-service models. Being designed from the start to work in cloud deployments, MongoDB is a natural fit.
Learn how your enterprise can create its own MongoDB service offering, combining the advantages of MongoDB and cloud for agile, nearly-instantaneous deployments. Ease your operations workload by centralizing your points for enforcement, standardize best policies, and enable elastic scalability.
We will provide you with an enterprise planning outline which incorporates needs and value for stakeholders across operations, development, and business. We will cover accounting, chargeback integration, and quantification of benefits to the enterprise (such as standardizing best practices, creating elastic architecture, and reducing database maintenance costs).
As an official MongoDB-as-a-Service offering from MongoDB Inc., the maker for MongoDB, Atlas is becoming a very popular service offering for those who wish to build their applications in the cloud, regardless on AWS, Azure or GCP. One less known cloud product offered on the Atlas platform is Stitch, A group of services designed to interact with Atlas in every conceivable way, including creating endpoints, triggers, user authentication flows, serverless functions, and a UI to handle all of this. Adding these together, you have a server-less solution running on top of MongoDB cloud.

Building a Global-Scale Multi-Tenant Cloud Platform on AWS and Docker: Lesson...Felix Gessert
In this talk we share the lessons learned while building out the Baqend Cloud platform on AWS and Docker. Baqend’s AWS-hosted architecture consists of a caching CDN-Layer, global and local load balancing, a group of REST and Node.js servers and a database cluster with Redis and MongoDB. As customers have their own set of containerized REST and Node servers, we needed a cluster that on the one hand is horizontally scalable and on the other hand easily manageable and fault-tolerant from an operational perspective. Today there are at least 4 popular systems that claim to support this:
- Kubernetes
- Apache Mesos
- Docker Swarm
- AWS Elastic Container Service (ECS)
Thinking that ECS would certainly be the easiest option on AWS, we started building our cluster on it. We quickly came to realize that while ECS was astoundingly stable and easy to use there were inherent limitations that could not be worked around. An old Docker version, missing network isolation, no means of parameterizing task and forced memory constraints are major limitations of ECS we will talk about. Seeing the daunting operational overhead of running Kubernetes or Mesos in practice we turned to Docker’s native clustering solution Swarm. We will present how Swarm works with both Docker and AWS and highlight the advantages and downsides compared to Amazon’s ECS.

Implementing data and databases on K8s within the Dutch governmentDoKC
A small walkthrough of projects within the dutch government running Data(bases) on OpenShift. This talk shares success stories, provides a proven recipe to `get it done` and debunks some of the FUD.
About Sebastiaan:
I have always been a weird DBA, trying to combine Databases with out-of-the-box thinking and a DevOps mindset. Around 2016 I fell in love with both Postgres and Kubernetes, and I then committed my life to enabling Dutch organisations with running their Database workloads CloudNative.
Over the last few years I worked as a private contractor for 2 large government agencies doing exactly that, and I want to share my and others (success stories) hoping to enable and inspire Data on Kubernetes adoption.
Red Hat's own Sr. Cloud Storage Solutions Architect Narendra Narang took the podium at Red Hat Storage Day New York 1/19/16 to highlight emerging use cases for Red Hat's software-defined-storage products.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

12. Summary
Data Persistence gives a “memory” to context data:
• Context Brokers only hold the latest value of context data
• Push to a Database to create logs and analyse changes of state
Don’t use a Context Broker as a database.
• Use a context broker to do context broker things - e.g. augmented context
• Use databases to do database things - e.g. Logging, Natural Language support
The FIWARE Catalogue contains two components to facilitate
data persistence:
• Cygnus - based on Apache Flume
• Draco - based on Apache NIFI
• Basic use cases are the same - different underlying technology
Create your own Point Solution if necessary
• Handle the subscription endpoint
• Push to custom Sink - e.g. Blockchain
11
13. Summary: Data Persistence Architectures
When architecting a solution, think about:
The amount of data produced
Storage and backup
How long to retain data?
GDPR and the right to forget
How to scale - can you fit it into a single database?
Do you need to consider a distributed Big Data solution?
Context Brokers do not offer data persistence directly , because
the data persistence needs will vary between Smart Solutions
