The document discusses Strategic Forty2's IT strategic planning process called the Strategic Forty2. The process uses industry-leading tools to understand business objectives, assess current IT assets, and plan projects to strengthen technologies and fill gaps. It breaks the process into 5 key aspects: business-IT alignment, application direction, technical infrastructure development, IT organization direction, and an IT strategic investment and value roadmap. Each aspect uses supporting tools to develop the IT strategy and link projects to business value. The process results in a plan to design systems that address strategic imperatives and ensure IT investment alignment with long-term business needs.

Creating A Business Focussed Information Technology StrategyAlan McSweeney
This presentation describes a structured approach to creating a business-focussed information technology strategy.
An effective business-oriented IT strategy is an opportunity to resolve the disconnection and to ensure the IT function is able to and does respond to business needs and is trusted by the business to provide IT solutions.
The IT strategy will consist of static structural elements relating to the organisation of the IT function:
• Capabilities – skills and abilities the IT function should possess and be able to use effectively and efficiently
• IT Function Structure – the organisation and arrangement of the sub-functions and their responsibilities and relationships
• Operating Model – how the IT function work and delivers value and the processes it implements and operates
• Staffing And Roles – the numbers of people, their roles, responsibilities, expected skills, experience and abilities, workload, reporting structures and expected ways of operating
It will also include dynamic elements relating to initiatives, both enabling initiatives within the IT function and specific business initiatives required to achieve the business strategy.

It is difficult to overstate the importance of governance to SOA initiatives, whether in the context of service governance (i.e. governing the lifecycle of services from creation through deployment) or the broader issues of IT governance (commonly defined as specifying the decision rights and accountability framework to encourage desirable behavior in the use of IT). This session presents a holistic discussion of governance with SOA. It outlines the key policies that organizations should consider with regards to finance, portfolios, operations, architecture, technology, projects and people. It will also outline six successful steps to governance with SOA, as part of the decisions, processes and policies that contribute to successful business and SOA objectives. The presenters will address, how as part of the execution of an SOA strategy, organizations should put together a SOA Roadmap. Also discussed is how organizations need to govern the execution of the SOA Roadmap to ensure delivery of all SOA and business objectives.

IT Financial Management Series - Part 1: Defining a Model to Effectively Run ...UMT
"This is the first part of the IT financial management series. In this webinar, Charlie Curcio, IT CFO shares his experience in defining what it means to Run the Business of IT.
On average companies spend 5% of the total operating budget on IT, increasing pressure on executives to reduce costs, communicate value and align IT investments with business priorities to drive a competitive advantage.
Today, many high performing IT organizations are adopting Integrated IT Portfolio Analysis (IIPA) best practices to effectively Run the Business of IT. Developing a holistic data model and financial framework is key to driving transparency across disparate IT domains and providing accurate and reliable metrics to enhance decision making."

One of the most daunting challenges organizations face in making decisions on what technology is needed to fully enable the business to achieve its strategy and objectives. The key is ALIGNMENT.
2. Why is Strategic Planning important?
Business strategies and objectives are increasingly dependent on IT
to be successful. An IT Strategy must lay out a roadmap and plan for
investment to establish the systems, infrastructure and services
necessary for the business to achieve long-term objectives.
Assessing how well current IT assets and capabilities are positioned
to support business goals will reveal application, infrastructure and
organizational strengths, weaknesses and gaps.
A well formulated strategy will directly link IT projects and initiatives
to sources of future business value.
Business leaders will understand IT’s priorities and how those
priorities are aligned with business direction.
The IT organization will have a clear picture of what systems and
services are needed, when and how they will contribute to the
success of the company.
3. What’s offered in the Strategic Forty2
process?
We use a complete set of industry leading IT Strategy tools.
Structured to be able to pick and choose individual tools as required
to meet current needs, or partially completed projects/undertakings.
A proven methodology for tackling strategic planning.
The process can be broken into parallel streams – utilizing in-house
resources where applicable – to expedite the conclusion.
The deliverable is an assessment of current applications, technical
infrastructure and organizational capabilities providing the necessary
insights and foundations to design aligned strategic programs and
initiatives to address strategic business imperatives, strengthen
existing assets, fill gaps and ensure IT investment alignment to meet
the long-term business needs of the business.
4. The Strategic Forty2 process will:
Understand
Clearly articulate business objectives and strategies and the role IT must
play in achieving them
Scan the marketplace for information technologies that can offer new
value or competitive advantage to the company
Communicate how IT will contribute strategic value for the foreseeable
future
Assess
Evaluate how well current applications are positioned to meet strategic
business needs
Identify gaps in application functionality that are critical to future plans
Forecast how the technical infrastructure will need to change to meet
future demands
Appraise the IT organization – its ability to deliver the systems and
services needed to meet company priorities
5. Plan
Define the projects and initiatives needed to strengthen and improve
existing technologies and fill in strategic gaps
Link these projects to sources of business value to build the case for
investment
Lay out the roadmap that determines the key commitments that IT will
meet in supporting business strategies
The Strategic Forty2 process will:
